Why do we need to obtain nutrients from food


- To provide energy for our body activities
- Provide raw materials for the growth of new cells and repair of damaged
cells
- Maintain health and normal function

Dietary fibres

Carbohydrates, proteins and lipids - primary food substances (for maintenance


of life)
Vitamins, minerals and dietary fibres - protective food u=substance (for
maintaining health)

Carbohydrates

- Made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen


- Can be classified into 3 types:
1) Monosaccharide
2) Disaccharide
3) Polysaccharide

● Monosaccharide
- The simplest form of carbohydrate
- C₆H₁₂O₆
- Sweet and soluble in water
- Readily absorbed in the alimentary canal
- ✔produce energy in cell respiration
- All reducing sugar
