Structural Questions
1. The diagram below shows an experiment on cereal shoots. Each shoot represents a
batch of similarly treated plants.

(a) Explain the change of shoot Z after 3 days. (4)

(b) Name the type of response you stated in part (a). Explain the importance of this response.
(3)

(c) Explain the result of shoot X. (2)

2. The following question refers to the diagram below, which shows how the eye controls the
amount of light entering it in bright light.

(a) Name structure X. (1)

(b) Describe the changes in the structures of the eye that bring about the response in the
change of structure Y when someone walks out from a dark room into a bright room. (3)
(c) The diagram below shows the suspensory ligaments and lens under different conditions.

(i) What condition does S respond to? (1)

(ii) Describe the changes in the structures of the eye that bring about the response from R to S.
(3)
Suggested solution:
Question 1
a) Shoot Z grows towards the unilateral light.
Auxins are produced at the shoot tip.
Due to unilateral light, auxins are moved to the shaded side of the shoot.
In shoot, increased concentration of auxins stimulates the shoot growth.
The shaded side therefore grows faster than the illuminated side. As a result, the shoot bends towards the light
source.

Remark:
 Make good use of comparative terms
 Remember to state where are auxins produced

(b) Positive phototropic response / positive phototropism

So that a plant can attain a higher position to obtain more light for photosynthesis and pollination.

Remark:
 Make sure you give the correct spelling of phototropism / phototropic response
 Make sure you state correctly whether the growth movement is positive or negative

(c) shoot X will grow vertically upward.

Shoot tip cannot be stimulated by unilateral light; auxins are then evenly distributed.
Two sides of the shoot grow in the same rate and the shoot therefore does not bend.

Remark:
 When explaining whether or not tropic response will occur, you should make reference to
whether auxins are evenly distributed or not.

Make sure you could apply the above concepts to the case of root.
Question 2
a) Cornea
b) Circular iris muscles contract
Radial iris muscles relax
Pupil constricts / becomes smaller

c) (i) Looking at distant object

(ii) Ciliary bodies relax
Suspensory ligaments are pulled
Lens become thicker

Remark:
 Collocation matters in Biology. In the past, many students have made inaccurate statements
such as 'pupil contracts' or 'suspensory ligaments relax.' It is important to note that only muscles are
capable of contracting and relaxing.

Here are some examples of appropriate collocations:

 Ciliary bodies (which consist of muscles) contract/relax.
 Pupil constricts/dilates.
 Suspensory ligament is pulled/slackened.
