The Fifth Sorrow of Mary, The Crucifixion of Jesus: Readings from

the Gospel according to John, Matthew and Luke

Narrator: So, the soldiers took charge of Jesus. Carrying his own cross, he
went out of the place of Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha. There they crucified him,
and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: Jesus of
Nazareth, The King of the Jews.
When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into
four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This
garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

Soldier 1: Let’s not tear it.

Soldier 2: Let’s decide by lot who will get it.

Narrator: This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled. They divided
my clothes among them and cast lots for my garments.
Mary went to Jesus who’s in the cross.

Mary: My Son…
Narrator: As those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their
heads and saying…

The one who mocked Jesus: King of the Jews! You who are going to
destroy the temple and built it in three days, save yourself! Come down from
the cross, if you are the Son of God!

Jesus: Father! Father! Forgive them for they know not what they do.
Narrator: One of the criminals who hung their hurled insults in him.
Criminal on the left: Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!
Narrator: But the other criminal rebuked him.
Criminal on the right: Don’t you fear God, since you are under the
same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds
deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.
Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

Jesus: Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.

Narrator: Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister,
Mary the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw hi mother
there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her…

Jesus: Woman, behold, your son (to Mary).

Behold, your mother (to his disciples).

Narrator: From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture
would be fulfilled, Jesus said…

Jesus: I am thirsty.
Narrator: A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it,
put the sponge on a stalk of hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. Jesus
drank the wine.

Jesus: It is finished.
Narrator: Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. The soldiers
pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and
water. The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is
true. He knows he tells the truth and he testify so that you also may
believe.
