INTERNATIONAL

BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA
PROGRAMME
What IS IB?
IB is a non-profit educational foundation which
started in 1968 in Geneva, Switzerland. The first
IB exams were taken by students at 12 schools
from 10 countries – including two state schools.
IB offers four programmes; IB Primary Years
Programme (PYP)(3-12 years of age), IB
Middle Years Programme (MYP)(11-16 years of
age), IB Diploma Programme (DP)(16-19 years
of age) and IB Career-related Programme (CP).
Today there are 4,655 schools offering 6,068
programmes worldwide. In Turkey IB started in
1994 and today there 63 schools offering IB
programmes. 44 of these schools offer the
Diploma Programme. 3 of these schools are
state schools. Our school is an authorized IB
school since 2007. Our School is the first State
school that offers the IB Diploma Programme.

Subjects in IB DP
In the Diploma Programme there are
High Level and Standard Level subjects.
Candidates have to choose at least three
high level subjects. The high level
subjects must be given in at least 240
hours, whereas the standard level subjects
must be given in at least 150 hours during
a two-year period.
Group 1 Studies in
Language & Literature
Group 1 consists of three courses:
Language A: Literature
Language A: Language & Literature
Literature and Performance.
In our school candidates have to choose
Turkish A: Literature, which is given in
high level. Students study about authors
which are given in prescribed list. The
work studied could be from authors from
the mother tongue as well as translated
works of authors from other countries.
External Assessment
Paper 1: Literary Commentary (2 Hours)
Students choose one of two passages given and
write a literary commentary. (20 Marks)

Paper 2: Essay (2 Hours)
Students write an essay based on at least two
works studied. (25 Marks) (25%)
Written Assignment
Students write a literary essay on one work
studied. (25 Marks) (25%)
Internal Assessment
Individual Oral Commentary and Discussion
Oral commentary on poetry studied with
question (10 min.) followed by a discussion
based on other works (10 min) (30 Marks)

Individual Oral Presentation
The presentation is based on works studied. It is
internally assessed and externally moderated.

Group 2 Language
Acquisition
Group 2 consists of two modern language
courses:
Language B
Language Ab Initio
In our school candidates have to choose
English B which is given in high level. It
is an additional language learning course
designed for students with some previous
learning in English. The main focus of the
course is on language acquisition and
development of language skills.
External Assessment
Paper 1: Receptive Skills(1 hour 30)
Text-handling exercises on five written texts based on
the core. (25%)
Paper 2: Written Productive Skills(1 Hour 30)
Students do two writing exercises. One task of 250-
400 words and one response of 150-250 words to
stimulus text (25%)
Written Assignment: Receptive & Productive Skills
Creative writing of 500-600 words plus a 150-250
rationale based on one or both literary texts read.
(20%)
Internal Assessment
Individual Oral (8-10 min.)
Based on the options: 15 minutes’ preparation
time and a 10 minute (maximum)
presentation and discussion with the teacher.
(20%)
Interactive Oral Activity
Based on the core: Three classroom activities
assessed by the teacher. (10%)
In our school candidates can also choose a
second foreign language like French,
German, Arabic or Russian. Ab Initio
subjects are given in standard level.
Language Ab Initio has a list of topics that
provide the students with opportunities to
practice and explore the language as well
as to develop intercultural understanding..
External Assessment
Paper 1: Receptive Skills(1 hours 30)
Understanding of four written texts. (40 marks) Text-
handling exercises. (30%)
Paper 2: Productive Skills(1 Hour)
Students do two writing exercises. One question to be
answered from a choice of two. (7 marks). One
question to be answered from a choice of three. (18
Marks).(25%)
Written Assignment: Receptive & Productive Skills
A piece of writing, 250-350 words, demonstrating
intercultural understanding and written in the target
language. (20 marks) (20%)
Internal Assessment
Individual Oral (25 marks)
Three-part oral internally assessed by the teacher
and externally moderated by the IB towards the
end of the course. (25%)
Part 1: Presentation of a visual stimulus (from a
choice of two) by the student.
Part two: Follow-up questions on the visual
stimulus.
General conversation including at least two
questions on the written assignment.
Group 3 Individuals
& Societies
Group 3 consists of nine courses:
Business and management
Economics
Geography
History
Information technology in a global society (ITGS)
Philosophy
Psychology
Social and cultural anthropology
World religions.
In our school candidates have to choose
Turkey in the Twentieth Century (TITC),
which is given only in standard level.
TITC is an interdisciplinary course
combining history, geography and
sociology. There are six topics in TITC.
External Assessment
Paper 1(1 Hour 30)
Students answer three questions, based on
documents, statistical data or graphics covering
all three disciplines. (45 Marks) (30%)
Paper 2 (1 Hour 30)
Students answer two extended-response on each
topic. Each topic question will draw on two
disciplines. The two questions for each topic will
cover all three disciplines. Candidates answer
two questions on any one topic. (40 Marks)

Internal Assessment
An investigate project on any area of the
syllabus. Candidates produce a research
essay to include at least two disciplines
1500-2000 words in length. (50 Marks)

Group 4 Sciences
Group 3 consists of three courses:
Biology
Chemistry
Physics
In our school candidates have to choose
Biology, which is given in both standard
and high level. Biology is the study of
life. Biology lends itself to an
experimental approach and it is expected
that this will be reflected throughout the
course.

Paper 1(45 min)
30 Multiple-choice questions on core material, about 15 of
which are common with HL. (30 Marks) (20%)
Paper 2 (1 Hour 15)
Data-based questions. Short answers and extended
response questions on core material. One out of two
extended response questions to be attempted by the
candidate. (50 Marks)(40%)
Paper 3 (1 Hour)
Candidates answer all questions, two to three short-answer
questions based on experimental skills and techniques,
analysis and evaluation. (35 Marks) (20%)
External Assessment HL
Paper 1(1 Hour)
40 Multiple-choice questions on core material, about 15 of
which are common with SL. (40 Marks) (20%)
Paper 2 (2 Hours 15)
Data-based questions. Short answers and extended
response questions on core material. Two out of three
extended response questions to be attempted by the
candidate. (72 Marks)(36%)
Paper 3 (1 Hour 15)
Candidates answer all questions, two to three short-answer
questions based on experimental skills and techniques,
analysis and evaluation. (45 Marks) (24%)
Internal Assessment
Individual investigation which takes about 10
hours. (50 Marks)(20%)
Group 5 Mathematics
Group 5 consists of three courses:
Further Mathematics
Mathematical Studies
Mathematics
In our school candidates have to choose
Mathematics, which is given in standard
level. This course caters for students who
already possess knowledge of basic
mathematical concepts and who are
equipped with the skills needed to apply
simple mathematical techniques correctly.
External Assessment
Paper 1(1 Hour 30)
Students answer compulsory short-response
questions and extended response questions
based on the whole syllabus. (No Calculator
allowed)(90 Marks)(40%)

Internal Assessment
An individual exploration. This is a piece of
written work that involves investigating an
area of mathematics. (20%)
Group 6 The Arts
Group 3 consists of six courses:
Dance
Film
Music
Theater
Visual Arts
Literature & Performance SL
In our school candidates can choose Visual
Arts, which is given in high level. This
course encourages students to challenge
their own creative and cultural
expectations and boundaries.
External Assessment
Paper 1: Comparative Study
Students analyze and compare different artworks by
different artists. This independent critical and
contextual investigation explores artworks,
objects and artifacts from differing cultural
contexts (20%)
Paper 2 Process Portfolio
Students submit carefully selected materials which
evidence their experimentation, exploration,
manipulation and refinement of a variety of visual
arts activities during the two-year course. (40%)
Internal Assessment
Part 3: Exhibition
Students submit for assessment a selection of
resolved artworks from their exhibition. The
selected pieces should show evidence of
their technical accomplishment during the
visual arts course and an understanding of
the use of materials, ideas and practices
appropriate to visual communication. (40%)
Candidates have to choose one subject from
one of the six groups of subjects.
Candidates can choose a second subject
from any of the first five groups, if they
do not want to choose a subject from the
sixth group of subjects, which is the arts.
The candidates can only choose the
subjects offered by the school.
When students choose Visual Arts, which is
high level, they can choose the Biology
subject in standard level. But if they
prefer the Language ab initio subject, they
have to choose the Biology subject in high
level.
Extended Essay
A diploma candidate must complete and
submit an extended essay (EE), which is a
piece of independent research of up to
4,000 words. Students can choose one of
the six subjects and they have to work
with a supervisor. In our school the
majority of students prefer to write their
extended essays in Turkish A literature.
Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
The TOK is a 100-hour course evenly
distributed over the two-year period. In
TOK students have to give a presentation
and submit an essay on one of the six
prescribed titles. The maximum length for
the essay is 1,600 words.
CAS
(Creativity, Activity & Service)
CAS is an extra-curricular activity. For
creativity students have to engage with
creative activities like music, painting,
acting etc. For activity students have to
engage with individual or team sports. For
service they have to make a meaningful
contribution to the community and
society. Students have to fulfill all strands
in a balanced manner.
To get the diploma, students have to
complete their extended essay, TOK essay
and CAS activities. If they do not do one
of them they are not awarded with a
diploma.
The highest grade a student can get is 45.
Students can get up to 7 grades for each of
the six subjects they have chosen, which
makes 42 points. And they also get 3
points from their extended essays and
TOK essays.
Award of the IB Diploma?
The Diploma will be awarded if;
 CAS requirements have been met.
 The student’s total points are 24 or more.
 There is no “N” awarded for TOK or EE.
 There is no “E” awarded for TOK or EE.
 There is no grade 1 awarded.
 There are no more than two grade 2s awarded.
 There are no more than three grade 3s or below awarded.
 The student has gained 12 points or more on HL subjects.
 The student has gained 9 points or more on SL subjects.
 The student has not received a penalty for academic
misconduct.
The IB exams will be taken in November
2019. But the exams for TITC, Arabic Ab
Initio, German Ab Initio and Russian Ab
Initio will be taken in May 2019, because
there are no exams for these subjects in
the November session. Students can
retake the exams in two more sessions.
