Introduction
1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Overview
This document describes the installation of the High Precision
Acoustic Positioning (HiPAP) Transceiver unit Model x81.
A HiPAP transceiver unit contains the transmission and reception
electronics for the system, and will normally be located in the
sonar room next to the hull unit. Some drawings and diagrams are
included in the text, though refer to the Cable layout document
for detailed instructions on the interconnections.
For example of system overview, see Figure 9 on page 28.
Note
The guidelines for installation presented here must be regarded
as a base for detailed plans to be prepared by the installation
shipyard. These plans must include drawings, instructions and
procedures specific to the ship in which the equipment is to
be installed. These drawings must be approved by the local
maritime classification society before use.

3 INSTALLATION
3.1 Introduction
The HiPAP Transceiver unit Model x81 cabinet must be mounted
on to a bulkhead.
The HiPAP Transceiver unit Model x81 is constructed of steel
panels, containing a rack holding the system electronics modules.
A cooling unit is mounted on the right side of the unit. On the
left side is an access door for plugging connectors.
The HiPAP Transceiver unit Model x81 is designed to be mounted
on a suitable bulkhead, and is fitted with vibration / shock
absorbers to reduce the effects of transceiver unit vibrations.
• Used for the HiPAP 500 with eight (8) TRX32 boards
• Used for the HiPAP 450 with two (2) TRX32 boards
• Used for the HiPAP 350 with two (2) TRX32 boards
• Used for the HiPAP 100 with one (1) TRX32 board
Note
The guidelines for installation presented here must be regarded
as a base for detailed plans to be prepared by the installation
shipyard. These plans must include drawings, instructions and
procedures specific to the ship in which the equipment is to
be installed. These drawings must be approved by the local
maritime classification society before use.
Note
For ventilation and maintenance purposes, there must be a
minimum of 300 mm clear space between the transceiver unit
and the next unit or bulkhead horizontally.
Below the unit there must be minimum 50 cm space for cable
routing.
It must be minimum 50 cm accessible space on the left of the unit
to allow access through the access door on the left side.
16 312411/B
Installation
Note
The maximum distance between the transceiver unit and the hull
unit is restricted by the length of the transducer cable. Standard
length is 7.5 meters. Refer to Kongsberg Maritime drawing
numbers 306009 and 306577.
3.1.3 Logistics
Safety - Refer to the High voltage safety warning in the front
of this manual.
Personnel - Minimum 3.
Qualifications - Trained mechanical/electrical fitters.
Ship location - No special requirements.
Special tools - None.
Drawings - Transceiver unit Model x81 mounting drawing, refer
to Kongsberg Maritime drawing number 308630.

Caution
Check the other side of the bulkhead and decks before
welding, to ensure there will be no “surprises” when you
weld the brackets to the bulkhead.
The anchor bolts for the shock absorbers are screwed on to the
brackets.
1 Select a suitable bulkhead.
2 Measure and mark the locations where the shock absorber
brackets (with bolts) are to be mounted.
Note
Be aware of the maintenance and ventilation spaces, refer to
section 3.1 on page 16, and to Kongsberg Maritime drawing
number 308630.

Installation
WARNING
Ensure that all the power supplies are switched
off and the fuses removed before you connect the
cables.
Note
The cabinet for HiPAP Transceiver unit Model x81 is internally
pre-wired before sent to customer.
312411/B 21
Kongsberg HiPAP Transceiver unit Model x81
Cable connection
Inside the cabinet, connect the cables to the Filter boards in
correct order. The cables are labelled as shown in the Figure 14
on page 32. Cable 0 to Filter board 0, Cable 1 to Filter board 1,
...... Cable 7 to Filter board 7.
The correct order is indicated in Figure 17 on page 35, showing
the rear side of the HiPAP Transceiver unit Model x81 PCB rack.
Refer also to Kongsberg Maritime drawing numbers 308630 and
306577/306009.

Installation
312411/B 23
Kongsberg HiPAP Transceiver unit Model x81
General information
Note
The fiber connections are pre-installed, internally in the HiPAP
Transceiver unit Model x81 cabinet.
WARNING
During transport, cable laying and pulling into the
protective conduit, the cables must not be sharply
bent with a radius lower than the recommended
values or twisted in any way. The cable must only
be pushed/pulled by hand, not by machine.
See technical specifications for minimum allowed
bending radius , refer to section 2.3.1 on page 9.
24 312411/B
Installation
• Where cables are laid on the floor, e.g. just before entry into
a cabinet, cable trays must be used in order to prevent the
possibility of physical damage being caused by personnel
accidentally stepping on the cables.
• The fibre-optic cable should have a sufficient slack in both
ends to allow installation and termination inside the network
distribution unit.
Cable termination
Terminating fibre-optic cables
Fibre-optic cables should be delivered in required length ready
with ST connectors in both ends.
A fibre splice box is installed and connected next to the ethernet
switch/converter in the upper part of the HiPAP Transceiver unit
Model x81 cabinet, refer to Figure 12 on page 30 and Figure
15 on page 33.
Note
If fibre termination is to be performed, only experienced
personnel is to be doing the termination.
After the termination of fibre-cables, each fibre has to be tested
for reflections and damping (loss). The test results must be
documented.
Cable screen
If the fibre-cable is screened/armoured, the screen/armour
must be terminated in EMC cable glands. If the cable has no
screen/armour, standard cable glands can be used.
The outer cable screen, if applicable, is to be grounded in both
ends. Grounding is done by means of shielded cable glands or
EMC MCTs at the point of entry into the console/cabinet. Inner
cable screen(s), if applicable, is to be terminated together with
the outer screen.
312411/B 25
Kongsberg HiPAP Transceiver unit Model x81
Caution
Do not attempt to run the system before the checks
listed in the Test and alignment procedure have
been completed.
