The Mother of the

Supreme Crown Pinnacle

Victorious in All Aspects,

Completely Purifying All Bad Migrations

In the Indian language: Arya Sattva Dugatha Pari Shodani

Maha Batsaya Nama Dharani
In The English Language: it is a mantra called The Mother of
the Supreme Crown Pinnacle, Victorious in All Aspects, Com-
pletely Purifying All Bad Migrations

I prostrate to all the buddhas and bodhisattvas.

The deva son called Extremely Stable One abides in front of

the Good Pure Dharma deva who is among the devas, sur-
rounded by devas’ great, unfathomable celestial mansions,
and the great enjoyment of devas. With great multitudes
of female devas playing and enjoying happiness, he experi-
enced the great enjoyments of a deva.

One night, he heard a sound that said: “The deva son Ex-
tremely Stable One will die after seven days. He will be born
in the Land of Jambudvipa after his death and will experience
the seven rebirths of migratory beings. After experiencing
the seven rebirths of migratory beings, he will be born in the
6 Practices of Namgyälma

hell realms. Even if it is possible for him to be born as a hu-

man being, he will be born poor and blind.”

The deva son heard this sound and was extremely fright-
ened and his hair stood up on end. He went far, far away to
where the deva king Indra abides. He prostrated at the feet
of the deva king Indra. Then, breathlessly, he said: “Oooooh!
Oooooh!” While he was exclaiming “Oooooh! Oooooh!” he
spoke to King Indra like this:

“Please listen, King of Devas. I, the deva, surrounded by mul-

titudes of deva girls and happily playing and experiencing the
pleasure of a deva’s enjoyment, heard a sound that said: ‘The
deva son Extremely Stable One will die after seven days. He
will be born in the Land of Jambudvipa after his death and
will experience the seven rebirths of migratory beings. After
experiencing the seven rebirths of migratory beings, he will
be born in the hell realms. Even if it is possible for him to be
born as a human being, he will be born poor and blind.’”

He asked King Indra: “I heard this sound. What should I do

now?”

When King Indra heard these words from the deva son Ex-
tremely Stable One, he was extremely surprised. The deva
son thought, “Which seven rebirths of migratory beings will
I experience?”

For a moment King Indra did not speak. “The seven rebirths
of migratory beings are rebirth as a pig, a dog, a fox, a mon-
key, a vicious snake, an eagle, and a hawk.” As King Indra saw
these seven rebirths of migratory beings, he thought, “Oh!
This deva son will experience great, unceasing suffering.
Who else besides a Having Destroyed the Enemy, Fully En-
lightened Buddha can be a refuge and guide for him? Upon
who else can he rely?”
Practices of Namgyälma 7

Then King Indra went to where the Buddha was. He carried

incense, flowers, various scented things, ornaments, and
cloth. He bowed his head at the feet of the Buddha, circum-
ambulated the Buddha seven times, and made a great offer-
ing. Then he sat down in front of the Buddha and explained
the seven migrations of the deva son Extremely Stable One.

Immediately after King Indra explained the seven migrations

of the deva son Extremely Stable One, light rays of many
various colors radiated forth from the crown pinnacle of the
Buddha. The light rays filled the world in the ten directions
and then returned and entered into the holy mouth of the
Buddha. Then the Buddha smiled. He said this to King Indra:
“There is a mantra called The Mother of the Supreme Crown
Pinnacle, Victorious In All Aspects, Completely Purifying All
Bad Migrations. This mantra ends all rebirths with obscura-
tions and suffering. It completely purifies hell realm sentient
beings, animal rebirths, and the yama world. It brings sen-
tient beings to the path of happy migrator beings.”

“Deva, therefore this mantra The Mother of the Supreme

Crown Pinnacle, Victorious In All Aspects completely puri-
fies all bad migrations. As soon as one hears it, obscurations
are purified, various types of sufferings are ended, and one
achieves a continuity of completely pure births. One will al-
ways remember one’s past lives. One will go from one bud-
dha’s pure realm to another. One will go from one deva
world to another. One will be reborn in the Deva Realm of
the Thirty-Three. As soon as this mantra is recited, that per-
son whose life is finishing will receive extended life, collect
completely pure actions of body, speech, and mind, and
abide in happiness. All the tathagatas will look at that sen-
tient being. The tathagatas will look at that sentient being
unceasingly and forever. They will always protect, guide, and
hide them. All the bodhisattvas will think of that person. Just
by reciting this mantra, rebirth as a hell realm sentient being,
8 Practices of Namgyälma

as an animal, in the yama world, and in all the preta realms

are dried up, destroyed, scattered, and eliminated. Those
realms will become empty. Even that becomes opening the
door of all the buddhas’ realms, all the devas’ realms, and all
the bodhisattvas’ realms. One will be reborn wherever one
wishes.

Then King Indra made this request to the Buddha: “Destroyer

Qualified Gone Beyond One, please tell this mantra. Please
benefit all sentient beings.” Then the Buddha understood
King Indra’s request and this mantra was taught:

“This is the mantra of The Mother of the Supreme Crown Pin-

nacle, Victorious In All Aspects, Completely Purifying All Bad
Migrations. This mantra purifies negative karmic actions and
all obscurations. It leads sentient beings to the paths of happy
migrators and destroys all the aspects of bad migrations.”

“This mantra is taught and blessed by all the Buddha De-

stroyer Qualified Gone Beyond Ones equaling the number of
grains of sand of 880 million Ganges Rivers, and all of them
rejoice. It is sealed by all the tathagatas so that all sentient be-
ings become happy migrator beings. It stops sentient beings
from falling down to the lower states of migration. In order to
liberate all sentient beings, hell beings, animal beings, inhabit-
ants of the yama world, those who become pitiful in suffering
places, and those who fall into the oceans of suffering, this
mantra was taught by the buddhas. This mantra abides in the
world for sentient beings who have shortage of life and many
diseases, who have degenerated the mind and degenerated
from the path.”

“You the deva should memorize this mantra and recite it to

the deva son Extremely Stable One. By reading this, he should
10 Practices of Namgyälma

attempt to recite it and to pray, to reflect and meditate, to

remember, to make offerings, to memorize, and to actualize.
I am giving you the base of the secret mantra, the mudra to
benefit all the deva sons who are abiding in the deva realms.
For their happiness and for the sake of all sentient beings in
the land of Jambudvipa, you the deva should memorize this
mantra.”

“As soon as one hears this mantra, all karmic obscurations

accumulated over hundreds of thousands of eons are puri-
fied. And you should know that in future lives, one will not
be born as hell beings, animals, yamas, pretas, asuras, yak-
shas, worms, jungpo, tsorpo, lu-tsorpo, je-che, dogs, turtles,
snakes, very mischievous wild animals, birds, mosquitoes,
scorpions, or ants. One will be born into the various types of
the great race of bodhisattvas, the race of Brahma, the race
of the great King Shing Sala, the great Shing Sala race of the
head of household, and the great Shing Sala race of the busi-
ness leader. As I said, one will be born like this.”

“Therefore deva, due to the power of this mantra, beings will

achieve completely pure births up until the heart of enlight-
enment is achieved. Deva, therefore you should know that
this mantra is powerful, of great benefit and great power.
Deva, for the sake of all sentient beings, here the mantra
called The Mother of the Supreme Crown Pinnacle, Victori-
ous In All Aspects remains. It is like the precious jewel or the
essence of the sun. It is extremely unstained like the sky. It
radiates completely pure, clear, illuminating light rays.”

“Deva, you should realize that sentient beings who recite

this mantra are unstained. It is like this: the gold of the Jam-
budvipa is completely pure, extremely soft, and very beauti-
ful. Like that, Deva, you should know that any sentient being
who hears this will be completely pure and will be born like
that even in future lives. Deva, whoever recites this mantra,
whoever writes this mantra in the scriptures, whoever mem-
Practices of Namgyälma 11

orizes it, reads or recites it, makes prayers, makes offerings,

actualizes it, listens to it, preserves it, or keeps it – all these
sentient beings will become completely pure. This mantra
puts an end to all hell realm rebirths.”

“Deva, write the letters of this mantra and put it on the top of
a banner. Leave it on a high mountain, a tall building, and on
top of the life tree of a stupa. Deva, any bhikshu, bhikshuni,
upasaka or upasika, and any son of the race or daughter of
the race who sees this mantra on the top of the banner, who
comes under the banner’s shadow, or even receives dust or
wind that has touched that banner will be free from all nega-
tive karma and the fear of going to bad migrations. You should
know that these sentient beings will not be born as sentient
beings in the hell realms or animal realms, as inhabitants of
the yama world, as pretas or asuras.”

“Deva, these sentient beings are predicted by the buddhas

and they will never turn away from the highest complete
enlightenment. Deva, there is no question if these sentient
beings make offering of service, flowers, perfume, incense,
rosaries, ointment, paint, umbrella, banners, flags, and cano-
pies adorned with ornaments, or if they make stupas in the
four roads and put this mantra inside and then place their
palms together in prostration and circumambulate. Indra,
you should realize that this sentient being is a great sentient
being, the son of tathagatas, abiding in the Dharma, and a
stupa of the tathagatas.”

Then, later that night when dusk had fallen, the Yama King
of Dharma went to where the Buddha Destroyer Qualified
Gone Beyond One was, and made offerings of flowers, deva
dress, ornaments, and respect. He circumambulated the Bud-
dha seven times and bowed down to the Buddha’s feet. He
said this to the Buddha: “Destroyer Qualified Gone Beyond
One, this mantra is powerful and has great benefits. I will
unceasingly abide as a protector behind that sentient being
12 Practices of Namgyälma

and completely protect that sentient being. That being will

be freed from all the hell realm sentient beings’ births. Be-
cause he is following the teaching of the Buddha, I will pro-
tect that being.”

The four great guardian kings asked the Buddha Destroyer

Qualified Gone Beyond One, “How should the practice of this
mantra be performed?” The Buddha explained to the four
great guardian kings: “Listen to me. I will explain how to per-
form this practice in order to benefit all sentient beings. On
the fifteenth day, wash the son of the race and the daughter
of the race, wear clean clothes, abide in the eight precepts,
and recite this mantra one thousand times. The sentient be-
ing whose life is finished will receive an extended lifespan,
will be free of disease, will achieve the cessation of all obscu-
rations, will be liberated from all bad migrations, hell realm
sentient beings’ rebirths, and so forth. At least, one should
recite this mantra in the ears of animals. One should know
that this bad migration will be their last. Anyone who suffers
from a very heavy disease that even the doctors cannot cure
will be liberated from the disease and cease all bad migratory
rebirths. After death, this being will be born in the world of
paradise. That being should know that will be their last birth
in the womb. That being so, wherever he is reborn, he will
only be born in the heart of the lotus. In all his lives, he will
remember all his previous births. If one recites the mantra
twenty-one times and blows on mustard seeds for the sake
of sentient beings who have accumulated karma and died,
and if one then throws the mustard seeds over the bones of
those dead sentient beings, those sentient beings will not be
born as hell realm sentient beings, as animals, as inhabitants
of the yama world, or in preta places. Those sentient beings
will be liberated from bad migrations due to the power of
the mantra. They will be born in the realms of the devas.”
Practices of Namgyälma 13

“Anyone who recites this mantra twenty-one times a day will

become a worthwhile object of so many sentient beings’ of-
ferings. That being will have a long life and experiences bliss
and always have joyfulness. He will achieve the great sorrow-
less state. After the death transference, that sentient being
will be born in the world of paradise. From there, that sen-
tient being will go to various different buddha fields, meet
all the tathagatas, and all those tathagatas will give breath
to that being. All the tathagatas will make prediction, and,
because of abiding in all the buddhas’ fields, that being will
illuminate the world.”

“Deva, this method will completely purify all the bad migra-
tions such as the hell realms and so forth, and one will have
a long life. Deva, you go and recite completely this mantra to
the deva son Extremely Stable One. Deva, after seven days,
return here with the deva son Extremely Stable One. All the
migrations of the deva son Extremely Stable One will be ex-
tremely happy and he will have devotion.” Then King Indra
took what was taught by the Buddha and gave this mantra to
the deva son Extremely Stable One.

The deva son recited this mantra six times by day and six
times at night for seven days. Things became perfect all the
time. Like this, he was liberated from bad migrations, com-
pleted abiding in the path of happiness, and received a long
life. He said, “Ema Ho! Ema Ho! A la la Buddha! A la la Dhar-
ma! A la la that this great mantra happened in the world that
completely liberated me from this great danger! I express
especially what was expressed especially.”

Here the mantra of The Mother of the Supreme Crown Pin-

nacle, Victorious In All Aspects, Completely Purifying All Bad
Migrations is completed.

Colophon:
This text was translated, arranged, and elaborated upon by Lama Thubten
Zopa Rinpoche at Ösel Shen Phen Ling in Missoula, Montana and com-
pleted at Vajrapani Institute in Boulder Creek, California on September 13,
1988, for the benefit of a student in New York with cancer. It was edited

Translator’s Dedication:
Due to this merit, may all sentient beings’ sufferings be pacified and all
their wishes for happiness succeed according to Dharma; especially may
incurable disease caused by external factors be cured immediately by this
practice and may sentient beings quickly attain Namgyälma’s enlighten-
ment.
Practices of Namgyälma 15

Meditation on Namgyälma
Visualize your root Guru – who is one with the dharmakaya
holy mind of all the buddhas of the three times – manifesting
in the aspect of the Mother Victorious in All Aspects [Nam-
gyälma]. She is seated upon a moon disc at your crown, and
her legs are in the vajra posture. Her holy body is white, and
she has three faces and eight arms. Her root face is white,
her right face is yellow, and her left face is blue, grinning in
the aspect of slight wrath. Each face has three eyes. Her first
right hand holds a variegated vajra, the second holds Amitab-
ha in the lotus, the third holds an arrow, and the fourth is in
the mudra of granting sublime realizations. Her first left hand
holds a vajra lasso with the threatening mudra at her heart,
the second is in the mudra of granting fearlessness, the third
holds a bow, and the fourth is in the mudra of concentration,
holding a nectar vase in the palm.

In order to purify the two obscurations, the imprints, and the

entire suffering of samsara, and in order to lead yourself and
all sentient beings to enlightenment, meditate on the gradu-
ated path to enlightenment. Make intensive requests to the
Guru, the Mother Victorious in All Aspects, for blessings to re-
ceive these realizations.

Meditation on the Path to Enlightenment

I take refuge in the Holy Guru, the essence of all buddhas, the
original granter of all holy teachings, and the lord of all supreme
beings.
16 Practices of Namgyälma

Please, Guru-Buddhas, bless me to unify my mind with the

Dharma and to succeed in practicing Dharma. May nothing
prevent me from receiving this graduated path. Please bless
me to take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha with
all my heart.

Now that I have received this perfect human rebirth, which

is highly meaningful and so difficult to obtain, please bless
me to always practice virtue and abandon non-virtue.

This life is perishable, transient, and fragile. Its nature is

changeable, and it decays in even the shortest second.
Therefore, my death is definite but its actual time is most
indefinite.

Karma is most profound. Even in one hour, I create much

more negative karma than positive. This negative karma will
definitely bring rebirth in the lower realms, where the suffer-
ing is unimaginably unbearable. Even one small negative ac-
tion has many suffering results, and the karma I have created
will always bring its result, no matter how long it takes. Not
only that, karma is never lost, not even after more eons than
the ordinary mind can imagine.

Through practicing the laws of karma, I might be reborn in

the upper realms, but I would still have to experience un-
limited samsaric suffering because of my uncontrolled delu-
sion and karma. Please grant me blessings to realize fully the
evolution of samsara, from uncontrolled rebirth up to death
and rebirth, so that I may follow night and day the threefold
training of the path – supreme conduct, supreme concentra-
tion, and supreme wisdom – the main method to release me
from samsara.

Each sentient being has been my mother, not just once but
countless times, and most of them are experiencing extreme
suffering. Please grant me blessings to bring success to all
Practices of Namgyälma 17

sentient beings by renouncing perfect self-happiness [nirva-

na], meditating on bodhichitta [exchanging self with others],
and practicing the bodhisattva deeds.

Having trained my mind in the general path, may I have no

sorrow in experiencing the samsaric sufferings of all sentient
beings for a very long time.

Please grant me blessings to follow the quick Vajrayana teach-

ings, by [realizing bodhichitta through] experiencing the un-
imaginably unbearable suffering of sentient beings as my
own.

Through keeping my vows and the instructions of the Guru

with greater care than anything in my life, may I attain Nam-
gyälma’s enlightenment immediately, in order to enlighten all
sentient beings.

Praise and Request

Your holy body, complete in the holy signs and exemplifica-
tions, is extremely meaningful to behold. Your holy speech
possesses the sixty melodies; anyone who hears it is liberat-
ed. Your holy mind completely knows cessation and all realiza-
tions. You perfectly guide all migrators. To you, the Venerable
Destroyer Qualified Mother Victorious in All Aspects who, just
by appearing to the mind, eliminates the darkness of unknow-
ing ignorance, grants long life, fortune, wisdom, and sublime
attainments, I make requests.

The savior Buddha Amitayus, who is the supreme leader for

those depending on change [sentient beings], praised you the
devi as the excellent holy object of refuge. I request you to
guide me, the pitiful one, with your great compassion.

If you are praised through meditation on your holy body and

recitation of the mantra, you grant long life, fortune, the
18 Practices of Namgyälma

power of mantra, clairvoyance, and any attainment one wish-

es. Please show us the power of your blessings. If, because
of our evil behavior, you are not pleased and do not grant us
blessings, upon whom can we rely? Who is there with greater
compassion than you?

Please, great treasure of compassion, pay attention to us. As

a mother especially loves her most pitiful son, so the victors
and sons of the victorious ones especially have compassion
for us pitiful ones. Therefore, I request you to guide us.

In short, in all our lives, we won’t seek any refuge other than
you, the one special deity, the Destroyer Qualified Mother
Victorious in All Aspects. Please guide us with your compas-
sion and lead us along the path.

Recite this mantra with the following visualizations:

First Visualization
From Namgyälma’s holy body, nectar beams are emitted like
sunbeams. Nectar flows along the beams and enters into
your body and mind. All the obscurations exit your body
20 Practices of Namgyälma

as dirty liquid in the aspect of smoke or coal liquid. All dis-

ease exits your body as pus and blood. All spirit harm exits
your body as creatures – snakes, scorpions, and so forth. All
obscurations, negative karma, disease, and spirit harm are
completely purified.

The earth cracks open and the Lord of Death, Yama, looks
at you with an open mouth – so eager for your life. All ob-
scurations, diseases, and so forth enters into his mouth and
transforms into nectar. His mouth closes and is sealed with a
vajra. The Lord of Death is extremely satisfied and descends
nine stories into the earth. It becomes impossible for him to
return. This is a method for long life.

Second Visualization
Just as a glass filled up with milk brings all the dirt out, simi-
larly, your whole body is filled with nectar rays. All your ob-
scurations and negative karma are pushed up by the nectar
and exit through the crown of your head, like a hat blown by
the wind.

Third Visualization
Strong nectar rays come from Namgyälma’s holy body like
a flood. They enter you suddenly and all obscurations, nega-
tive karmas, and spirit harm become completely non-exis-
tent. You don’t know where they have gone. Feel that your
mental continuum has become completely pure, like a mir-
ror, without any stain or obscuration. Your body becomes
like a crystal, calm and clear.

When we purify ourselves, we should also visualize purifying

all other sentient beings, especially those people who have
diseases for which there is no cure and whose life is in dan-
ger, those who the doctors cannot help, and those who re-
ceive the wrong treatment. If you know particular sentient
Practices of Namgyälma 21

beings who are sick, dying, or dead, focus on purifying them.

This mantra benefits those dead ones. We should also espe-
cially think of the hell beings, animal beings, and preta beings
who have the greatest suffering now.

Then dedicate the merit to be able to generate bodhichitta,

which is the door of the Mahayana path to enlightenment,
and the source of all happiness and success for yourself and
all sentient beings.

Dedication
Due to all these merits, may the precious bodhichitta, the
source of all happiness, which is not yet generated be gener-
ated, and may that which has been generated never degen-
erate but always increase.

However many sick sentient beings there are, may they all be
liberated from their diseases right in this second. May sen-
tient beings never receive disease.

It is only from the kindness of my gurus that I have met the

unequalled teachings of Buddha. Therefore, I dedicate all this
merit so that all migratory beings without exception may be
guided in the future by kind and holy gurus.

Due to all the three time merit accumulated by myself and

by others, may any being who merely see, hear, remember,
touch, or talk to me be freed in that very second from all
their sufferings and abide in happiness forever.

Every supreme and general attainment follows solely upon

pure devotion to you, my protector. Seeing this, I give up my
body and even my life. Please bless me to practice only what
will please you.
22 Practices of Namgyälma

Due to all these merits, may all the father and mother sen-
tient beings have happiness and may the lower realms be
empty forever.

Wherever there are bodhisattvas, may all their prayers be

accomplished immediately. May I be the cause of all this by
myself alone.

Just like Arya Namgyälma, may I be able to benefit others by

completely actualizing the wishes of all migrator beings.

Due to all the three time merits accumulated by myself and

all other sentient beings, please Guru Namgyälma, make it
possible for myself and all sentient beings to actualize the
benefit of the mantra right this second.

Due to these merits may I quickly achieve the enlightened

state of Nampar Gyälma and lead all sentient beings without
exception to that state..

Just as the brave Manjushri and Samantabhadra have real-

ized things as they are, I dedicate all these virtues in the best
way so that I may follow after them.

Whatever dedication the Victorious Ones Gone to Bliss of

the three times have admired as best, I also perfectly dedi-
cate all these roots of virtue in that way so that I may per-
form good works.

(Ushnishavijaya)
The Method of Accomplishing the
Totally Victorious Crown of the Head

Taking Refuge
Clearly visualize the objects of refuge and go for refuge.

I and all sentient beings, equal to the extent of space,

From now until we attain the highest enlightenment,
Go for refuge to the glorious holy gurus,
Go for refuge to the fully enlightened buddha-bhagavans,
Go for refuge to the holy Dharma,
And go for refuge to the arya Sangha. (3x or 7x)

Special Bodhichitta
I prostrate and go for refuge to the gurus and the three pre-
cious gems. I request you to bless my mind.

For the sake of all sentient beings, I will attain the state of a
fully accomplished buddha; for that reason, I will engage my-
self in the practice of Ushnishavijaya. (3x)
26 Practices of Namgyälma

It is also said to be fully acceptable to do the practices of

refuge, bodhichitta, and the four immeasurables in the usu-
al way. If you have the appearance of an ordinary being and
grasp at yourself as being ordinary, you cannot bless the of-
ferings to the merit field.

Blessing the Offerings

Instantly I transform myself into Ushnishavijaya.

Think like that and then bless the offerings. At the beginning,
it is best to prepare a purifying water.

OM VAJRA AMRITA KUNDALI HANA HANA HUM PHAT

OM SVABHAVA SHUDDHA SARVA DHARMA SVABHAVA

SHUDDHO HAM

Everything becomes empty. From the sphere of emptiness

appears a letter BAM, from which arises a white vase, made
of precious substances. It has all the characteristics, such as
a large belly, a long neck, and a drooping spout. Inside this
vase, the purifying water is empowered to dispel interfer-
ences and clear away impurities of the offering substances.

OM VAJRA AMRITA KUNDALI HANA HANA HUM PHAT

Recite this as much as you can, consecrating the purifying

water. Then make the offerings.

OM VAJRA AMRITA KUNDALI HANA HANA HUM PHAT

OM SVABHAVA SHUDDHA SARVA DHARMA SVABHAVA

SHUDDHO HAM
Practices of Namgyälma 27

Everything becomes empty. From the sphere of emptiness

appear the letters OM, from which arise huge and vast pre-
cious vessels inside of which are OM letters. The letters melt
into light and transform into offerings of celestial substanc-
es: water for drinking, water for cooling the feet, flowers,
incense, light, perfume, food, and music. These offerings are
pure, free from obscurations, and infinite like space.

OM VAJRA ARGHAM SVAHA

OM VAJRA PADYAM SVAHA
OM VAJRA PUSHPAM SVAHA
OM VAJRA DHUPAM SVAHA
OM VAJRA DIPAM SVAHA
OM VAJRA GANDHAM SVAHA

RANITA / SARVA BUDDHA KSHETRA PRACHALINI / PRAJNA
PARAMITA NADA SVABHAVA / VAJRASATTVA HRIDAYA /
SANTOSANI HUM HUM HUM / HO HO HO A KHAM SVAHA

Recite thus and perform the respective mudras. At the end,

make music by blowing and ringing, and invoke the blessing.
The Dharmarani dharani is put here, since it appears in the
tests of the Fifth Dalai Lama and of Thu-ukan; however, ac-
cording to Thu-ukan, it is not absolutely required. Then, the
merit field:

Visualizing the Merit Field

As I visualize myself as the Bhagavati, rays of light go out
from the BHRUM at my heart. The nine deities of Ushnishavi-
jaya, surrounded by buddhas and bodhisattvas, come from
their natural abodes.

OM VAJRA SAMAJA
28 Practices of Namgyälma

Saying this, perform the vajra collector mudra: make vajra

fists with both hands, holding your index fingers like hooks,
the two fists joined together.1 Make a snapping sound with
middle fingers and thumbs. Then join the palms of the hands
together and say:

I prostrate at the feet of Ushnishavijaya,

Glorious goddess with the color of the autumn moon,
Having an extremely beautiful and peaceful body with three
faces
and eight arms,
And who bestows boundless wisdom and the best of lives.

Then while making the respective mudras, say:

OM SARVA TATHAGATA USHNISHAVIJAYA SAPARIVARA

ARGHAM, (PADYAM, PUSHPAM, DHUPAM, DIPAM,
GANDHAM, NAIVIDYA, SHAPTA) PRATICCHA HUM SVAHA

Confession
I go for refuge to the Triple Gem.
I confess individually all sins.
I rejoice in the virtues of (all) beings.
I direct my mind to Buddha’s enlightenment.
To the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Supreme Community
I go for refuge until enlightenment.
Having generated the mind of supreme practices of
enlightenment,
May I achieve buddhahood for the benefit of (all) sentient
beings.

Then meditate on the four immeasurables.

Practices of Namgyälma 29

The Four Immeasurables

May all sentient beings have happiness and its cause.
May all sentient beings be free from sufferings and its
cause.
May all sentient beings be never separated from the happi-
ness that is without suffering.
May all sentient beings abide in equanimity, free from
attachment and aversion, and from being close to some
and distant from others.

The merit field returns to its own abode. Think like this.

The Main Practice

OM SHUNYATA JNANA VAJRA SVABHAVA ATMAKO HAM

All phenomena included in samsara and nirvana become

void. From the sphere of voidness appears PAM from which
arises a lotus. From AH [appears] a moon disk on top of which
appears a white BHRUM. From this syllable rays of light go
out that fulfill the aims of sentient beings. The light recol-
lects and transforms into a jewel ground, on top of which is
a throne with a ladder, on the throne is a variegated lotus.
On top of this are three round stages, and on top of these is
a moon disk. On the moon disk is a stupa shaped like a round
vase, which has a door. On top of the stupa is a square relic
box, on top of which are thirteen umbrellas, a canopy, and a
top part that crowns the whole. It is beautified with garlands
of flowers and fringes of silk.

Here, the generation of the deities is intended for general

practice. However, the Fifth Dalai Lama says it is not always
necessary to generate the six deities.
30 Practices of Namgyälma

Inside this vase is a variegated eight-petaled lotus, in whose

center sits a moon disk. On top of this is the syllable BHRUM,
from which arises a double vajra whose center is marked by
BHRUM. From this, light goes out, fulfilling the two purpos-
es. It then collects back and absorbs into the BHRUM, which
completely transforms into myself as Ushnishavijaya with a
white-colored body, three faces, and eight arms. The central
face is white, the right yellow; the left is blue and slightly
wrathful. Each face has three eyes. The first right hand holds
a crossed vajra at the heart. The second holds a lotus on top
of which sits Amitabha. The third holds an arrow. The fourth
is in the gesture of supreme generosity. The first left hand is
in the threatening mudra, holding a vajra noose. The second
holds a bow. The third is in the gesture of giving refuge. The
fourth is in the meditation gesture, holding a precious vase
filled with nectar. I am clothed with upper and lower gar-
ments of silk and decorated with various jewels. I am sur-
rounded by a garden of white light. On my right side, on a
moon disk, is white Avalokiteshvara. He is holding a yak-tail
fan in his right hand and a lotus in his left. At my left side,
on a sun disk, is blue Vajrapani, holding a flower topped by
a vajra. Both have peaceful expressions, are decorated with
jewel ornaments, and are dressed in silken garments. They
are both standing in the same posture.

To my east is blue Achala, his right hand brandishing a sword.

To my south is blue Kamaraja, holding a hook in his right
hand. West of me is blue Niladanda, his right hand holding a
stick. North of me is blue Mahabala, holding a trident in his
right hand. All four have one face and two arms. Their left
hands are in the threatening gesture, at their heart. All have
three eyes. Their hair streams upwards. They have jewels
and snake ornaments, and all wear tiger-skin loincloths. They
each stand on a lotus and sun disk with left legs stretched.
Practices of Namgyälma 31

Above the central goddess, to the right and to the left, are
two pure realm gods. They are holding aloft precious vases
filled with nectar, with which they offer a bath to the Bhaga-
vati. Each deity has an OM at the crown, a red AH at the neck,
a blue HUM at the heart, a yellow TRAM at the forehead, a
red HRIH at the navel, and green AM-AH on both thighs. I, the
central figure, have a white BHRUM at my heart. From this
syllable, rays of light radiate out and invoke the mandala of
the nine deities of Ushnishavijaya from their natural abodes,
surrounded by an assembly of buddhas and bodhisattvas.

OM VAJRA SAMAJA

Thus do the invitation.

Then make offerings, saying:

OM SARVA TATHAGATA ARGHAM (PADYAM, PUSHPAM,

DHUPAM, DIPAM, GANDHAM, NAIVIDYA, SHAPTA)
PRATICCHA HUM SVAHA

JAH HUM BAM HOH

We become non-dual.

Thus do the absorption.

Again rays of light go out from the BHRUM at my heart, invit-

ing the empowering deities, the buddhas of the five families,
with their entourage.

OM VAJRA SAMAJA

Thus do the invitation. Then, offer as before:

32 Practices of Namgyälma

OM PANCHAKULA SAPARIVARA ARGHAM, PADYAM,

PUSHPAM, DHUPAM, DIPAM, GANDHAM, NAIVIDYA,
SHAPTA PRATICCHA HUM SVAHA

I request all you tathagatas to grant me the empowerment.

Thus make the request. Then recite:

Just as at the time of his birth gods offered ablution, with

pure divine water.

OM SARVA TATHAGATHA ABHISHEKATA SAMAYA SHRIYE

HUM

Saying this, they empower me, pouring the vase water on

the crown of my head. My body is filled , and all impurities
are purified. The remaining water that overflows from the
crown of myself as the central figure, transforms into Vairo-
chana. Avalokiteshvara is crowned by Amitabha, Vajrapani
and the four guardians by Akshobhya, and the two celestial
boys by Ratnasambhava.

Then purify the offerings to the self-generation:

OM VAJRA AMRITA KUNDALI HANA HANA HUM PHAT

OM SVABHAVA SHUDDHA SARVA DHARMA SVABHAVA

SHUDDHO HAM

Everything becomes empty. From the sphere of emptiness

appear the letters OM, from which arise huge and vast pre-
cious vessels inside of which are OM letters. The letters melt
into light and transform into offerings of celestial substanc-
es: water for drinking, water for cooling the feet, flowers,
incense, light, perfume, food, and music. These offerings are
pure, free from obscurations, and infinite like space.

OM VAJRA DHUPAM SVAHA
OM VAJRA DIPAM SVAHA
OM VAJRA GANDHAM SVAHA
OM VAJRA NAIVIDYA SVAHA
OM VAJRA SHAPTA SVAHA

Now think that clouds of offering goddesses emanate from

your heart and make offerings.

OM SARVA TATHAGATA USHNISHAVIJAYA SAPARIVARA

ARGHAM, (PADYAM, PUSHPAM, DHUPAM, DIPAM,
GANDHAM, NAIVIDYA, SHAPTA) PRATICCHA HUM SVAHA

Then recite, while making a music offering:

OM VAJRA DHARMA RANITA / PRA RANITA / SAMPRA

RANITA / SARVA BUDDHA KSHETRA PRACHALINI / PRAJNA
PARAMITA NADA SVABHAVA / VAJRASATTVA HRIDAYA /
SANTOSANI HUM HUM HUM HO HO HO A KHAM SVAHA

Then, if you recite the praise by the victorious Tsongkhapa

called Chime Drubpa, that has a very powerful blessing. But,
if you want to abbreviate it considerably, recite instead:

I prostrate at the feet of Ushnishavijaya,

Glorious goddess with the color of the autumn moon,
Having an extremely beautiful and peaceful body with three
faces and eight arms
Who bestows boundless wisdom and the best of lives.
34 Practices of Namgyälma

This is said to be sufficient. Now, as much as possible, try to

have the pride and the clear appearance of yourself visual-
ized as the venerable Vijaya. While focusing on the deity’s
body, try to generate a strong ascertainment that although
it appears, it lacks inherent existence. Meditate as much
as you can in this deity yoga, which is the non-duality of
profundity and clarity. When you are tired of meditating,
then engage in recitation, in order to prompt the mind of
the deity.

I, the central figure, have at my heart, on top of a lotus and

a moon disk, the letter BHRUM, from which arises a double
vajra with a blue center, inside which is the letter BHRUM.
On top of this letter sits my guru. In front of the guru, are
my parents. To the guru’s right are my disciples, and to his
left my relatives and friends. Behind him are my attendants
with their entourage. They are all surrounded by the mantra
garland. Light goes out from the mantra, and fills my entire
body; it purifies all adverse conditions, sins, and obstacles of
myself and of those to be protected. The light goes outside
of my body, and fulfills the two purposes. The blessings of
the buddhas and their sons collect back in the form of rays
of light which absorb into my heart. This increases the life
span, the merit, and the wisdom of myself and of those to
be protected.

After reciting this softly, join your two palms, with your in-
dexes bent and touching the tips of your thumbs, the ges-
ture of giving your compliments. With that, recite the long
mantra.

In Praise of Goddess
Namgyalma
by Je Tsongkhapa

Fulfilling hopes of living beings, a veritable treasury of powers,

sun of a million rays of well-spoken words,
its brilliant white light of every virtue perfected,
glorious lama, victorious upon the heads of sentient beings.

To rely upon her is to gain the highest acumen,

is to reduce Yama’s club to a mere picture,
goddess, guardian of living creatures,
you of Buddha’s crown, I offer this meager praise.

A sightless man groping at forms,

I am at a loss to describe you,
yet from that hermitage of Sacred Dharma Perfectly
Compiled,
in the paradise of Sukhavati,
the teacher Amitayus, guardian of the world,
has lavished praise upon you, and from its study,
bowing my head to your feet from afar,
I have found opportunity, albeit brief, to say these words.

Radiant in its captivating latticework of light,

I prostrate to your perfectly symmetrical form,
a snow mountain amid an ocean of milk,
beautifully seated upon a lotus-moon circle.
40 Practices of Namgyälma

I prostrate to you of three full and noble faces,

aglow with the luminosity of crystal, gold, and sapphire,
the elegant middle, the peaceful right, the wrathful left.

Like the sapphire that crowns the canopy,

your plaited hair crowns your broad head.
Like rainbows shimmering in clear sky,
long eyebrows adorn your dark eyes.

Attractive lines of a well-formed nose,

exquisite lips on a graceful mouth,
soft, silky ears hung with precious stones,
I prostrate before you of captivating elegance.

Like sparkling colors of a beautiful string of stars,

the finest necklace embraces your body.
The nipples of your milk-bearing breasts
upon a broad chest like swans on a lotus lake.

Your soft hands in four pairs,

adorned by precious jewels, white as lotus roots,
the first holding crossed vajra and lasso in threatening gesture,
the second Amitabha’s statue and mudra of protection,
the third a bow and arrow, fourth the mudra of offering
and the ambrosia vase granting power over life and death.
Conquering warrior, longevity goddess, I prostrate to you.

Like lotus stems on the wish-granting ocean shore,

your radiant waist grows straight yet curved.
Like a crystal shrine encased in a rainbow’s tent,
your beautiful perfect body clothed in elegant silk.

Agreeably seated in the adamantine lotus pose,

the mother of buddhas as a glorious sixteen-year-old,
I prostrate to you who manifests in multitudinous forms
to realize hopes and wishes of living beings.
Practices of Namgyälma 41

Two bodhisattvas holding white fans,

Avalokiteshvara, lotus in hand, Vajrapani, vajra clasped,
are absorbed in insatiable gaze upon your form.

On your four sides destroying all hindrance,

sword, hook, club, vajra, in their right hands,
their left with threatening finger to tame the wicked,
Achala, Takiraja, Niladanda, Mahabala in wrathful form.

Above, two young gods from their pure celestial realm

earnestly pour pure waters from jeweled vases,
falling as the ambrosia rain of immortality.

All existence manifest before you,

love unending for beings beyond number,
giving shelter from fire, poisons, and weapons,
leader of men and gods, I bow before you.

Entanglements of ignorance toward all existence cut away,

mind spread equally to every living being,
bringer of joy and succor at all times, all places,
guardian of all worlds, I prostrate to you.

By virtue of meditation, offering, recitation, and praise

upon this noble lady, protector of living beings,
may I soon attain to your exalted state
to become savior of every needy creature.

May I dissolve with ease pernicious deeds

born from slavery to an intractable mind,
destined to lead to unwished-for results,
all performed under the sway of ignorance.

A full life, great ability, intelligence, faith,

compassion, determination, meditative concentration;
may all such qualities of body and mind
flourish and go from strength to strength.
42 Practices of Namgyälma

Absorbed in the practice of enlightenment,

may I perform by mere wish, in accord with my prayers,
infinitely powerful deeds pleasing to the buddhas.

When shaping my mind with study, contemplation, and

meditation,
I meet obstruction upon enlightenment’s path,
may I destroy utterly with wrathful action
the power of all dark forces.

By being seen, heard, or remembered,

or by mere contact with me,
may I satisfy fully, like a wish-fulfilling jewel or wish-granting
tree,
every hope of every living being.

In short, having delighted my spiritual masters,

and armed with study leading to the thoughts of the Buddha,
may I travel to the perfection of practice
to unfurl the Buddha’s teachings in the ten directions.

Benefits of
Namgyälma Practice
by Lama Zopa Rinpoche

The Namgyälma Origin Text

There is unbelievable benefit in the practice of Namgyälma.
I have translated completely the benefits of Namgyälma and
the story of how the Namgyälma deity happened. Reciting
this text is very, very powerful for purification.
When it is about time for devas to die, they hear karmic
sounds from the sky. They have karmic clairvoyance so that
they can see and remember the past, and also see where
they will be reborn in the future. In the deva realms, there
is incredible, unbelievable enjoyment. For example, after go-
ing from Singapore to India, where there is no hot shower,
where there is only cold water and no comfortable bed and
lots of junk, you can’t stand it. Like this, when devas see they
have to be reborn in the lower realms, they have incredible
mental suffering. Physically it is not hell, but mentally, it is
like being in hell.
One deva son, whose name was Denpa, saw that he was
going to be reborn as a monkey, a dog, and maybe a snake.
He was going to be born as six animals. He was so afraid that
he asked King Indra what could be done. King Indra could not
do anything, so King Indra asked Guru Shakyamuni Buddha,
44 Practices of Namgyälma

and Guru Shakyamuni Buddha manifested Namgyälma and

gave the mantra to Denpa. Then he recited the mantra six
times each day.
Since he was going to be reborn as those animals, one af-
ter another for six or seven days after his death, every day he
recited the mantra six times. This practice completely pre-
vented all those bad rebirths. Instead of experiencing those
animal rebirths, he purified the karma and was born in Tushi-
ta, the higher realm. After seven days, King Indra checked to
see where Denpa had been reborn, and could not find him.
He could see only lower deva realms and other lower realms;
he could not see higher.
It is the same for those who are living like this; the nega-
tive karma to be reborn in the lower realms is completely
changed by reciting the Namgyälma mantra six times. How-
ever, it is mentioned that if you recite this mantra even one
time, then this rebirth will be the last rebirth in the womb. It
has incredible benefit.
Also, if a person has a very severe disease and no doctors
can cure them, Namgyälma pujas and Namgyälma practice
can help; this is mentioned in the benefits. There are so many
benefits. This practice is regarded as very powerful to purify
the negative karmas and create the cause for long life.

The Benefits of Namgyälma Mantra

From the text Giving Breath to the Wretched:
Also it is mentioned in the commentary on Namgyäl-
ma’s mantra:
If one recites this mantra twenty-one times, then
blows on yellow mustard seeds and throws them on
the bones of the sentient being who has accumulated
much negative karma and has died, even if that sen-
tient being has been reborn as a hell-being, a preta, an
animal, in the world of Yama, or in other evil transmi-
Practices of Namgyälma 45

gratory realms, because of the power of this mantra

he will be liberated from those unfortunate realms.

Namgyälma is a deity for long life and purification. The man-

tra has infinite benefits; it is so powerful. It is said that for
anyone who hears this mantra, this will be the last time that
person is born in the womb. If animals hear it, they will not
be reborn in the lower realms.
The kind and compassionate Guru Shakyamuni Buddha
taught the benefits of reciting the Namgyälma mantra to the
four guardians. If you wash the body, wear clean clothes and,
while living in the eight precepts, recite the mantra 1,000
times, even if you are in danger of death due to the lifespan
accorded by past karma finishing, your lifespan can be pro-
longed, the obscurations are purified, and you are freed from
disease.
If you recite the mantra in the ears of animals, it will en-
sure that this is their last animal rebirth. If somebody has a
very heavy disease that doctors cannot diagnose, by doing
the practice mentioned above, the patient will be liberated
from the disease. They will not be reborn in the lower realms
ever again. After death, you will be reborn in the blissful
realm, the pure land. For humans, it makes the present life
the last rebirth from a womb.
If you recite this mantra twenty-one times, blow on mus-
tard seeds, and then throw them on the bones of very evil
beings who have created many heavy negative karmas, even
those beings will be immediately liberated from the lower
realms and will be reborn in a higher realm, such as those of
the devas. By throwing the seeds on bones or dead bodies,
the mantra affects the consciousness and purifies it, even
though the beings have already been reborn in the hells or
any of the lower realms, and those beings are reborn in the
deva realms and so on.
If you put this mantra in a stupa or on a banner inside the
house or above the roof, the negative karma of the insects
46 Practices of Namgyälma

or people who are touched by the shadow of the banner or

the stupa are purified, and they are liberated from the lower
realms. Also, the wind that touches this stupa or banner or
statues with this mantra inside will purify the negative kar-
ma to experience rebirth in the lower realms, as soon as it
touches any being. They are not reborn in the lower realms.
If the Namgyälma mantra is on a mountain, the negative
karma of all the insects or people who walk on that mountain
are purified. It is also mentioned that if you have the Nam-
gyälma mantra in your house, the house becomes purified
and blessed, and the same applies to your car. It is very good
to have the Namgyälma mantra in your car, because any in-
sects or people who touch the car will be purified. There is
no question about how much purification there is when sen-
tient beings recite this mantra, touch this mantra, or keep it
on their bodies.

Benefiting Others with the Namgyälma Mantra

There was a Chinese person from Hong Kong who was working
for Maitreya Project, and he made a copy of the Namgyälma
mantra that was bigger than a table. The mantra was written
out by somebody, and he brought it to me to correct. I used
to recite the long mantra for people who passed away, be-
cause it is very very powerful to purify negative karma. There
are unbelievable, unbelievable benefits to this mantra.
One time Lama Yeshe and myself went to south India to
receive a teaching from H.H. Ling Rinpoche. One day while
we were there, we went to see H.H. Trijang Rinpoche. He was
my root Guru and Lama Yeshe’s root Guru as well, so both
of us went to see Rinpoche in his house in Mungood. H.H.
Trijang Rinpoche was giving us an interview, but at the same
time, Rinpoche was doing his practice, doing meditation. In
the middle of the conversation, Rinpoche explained to us
what he was doing. He said, “I’m reciting Namgyälma mantra
because I received a request and offering from people who
Practices of Namgyälma 47

are requesting for people who died and those who are liv-
ing. I have received requests from the ten directions asking
me to pray and make offerings, so therefore, I’m reciting the
Namgyälma mantra.” Then Rinpoche said that people think
this mantra is only for long life, but it is actually very power-
ful for purification. After that, I recited Namgyälma mantra
for people who died.
The Chinese student who was working for Maitreya Proj-
ect carved the Namgyälma mantra out of iron or some oth-
er material. His entertainment is diving. He likes to go inside
the water, in the ocean, so he brought this very large mantra
down into the ocean. He wanted to put the mantra under the
water to benefit all the fish, to bless the water and give the
fish the chance to circumambulate it, which is great idea! He
was also going to take some stupas down there and tie them
with a post under the water, in order to benefit the fish. The
stupa touches the water, and of course the water is blessed
because of the powerful mantras inside.
Going back to the mantra, Namgyälma has unbeliev-
able power to purify. If you have Namgyälma mantra in the
house, then everybody who is living in the house is blessed;
their negative karmas is purified. Whoever touches even the
shadow of the house, insects or people, their negative kar-
mas is purified. If you have many of these mantras in the
car – either stuck on the ceiling in the car or somewhere
else, it has the same benefit as those others: all the people
who enter the car are always purified and they receive bless-
ing. Then when you drive the car, so many insects are killed;
they get crushed on the window by the wind. So many get
crushed. They die, but at least by touching the car which has
the Namgyälma mantra inside, their negative karma is puri-
fied. This mantra has great benefit like that. Having the man-
tra in the car, as many as possible, brings so much blessing.
It doesn’t mean, because you have the mantra in the car,
then you must drive where there are a lot of worms. It’s not
saying that, but when you drive so fast and you can’t see or
48 Practices of Namgyälma

know that they die, they receive benefit; at least their nega-
tive karma is purified. So it is very good, like this Chinese per-
son who is working for Maitreya Project.
First the mantra should be the correct one, because many
texts have the mantra but they have mistakes. It should be
the correct one, carved with wood or rubber. I think it is very
good to make it large, but it can be made any size. Then you
make a hole and tie it with ropes, and you sail the boat over
the ocean and put the mantra in the ocean. You might also
enjoy the scenery, the entertainment, but it blesses the wa-
ter and purifies the numberless sentient beings who live in
the water. That’s just an idea of how to benefit sentient be-
ings, not only people but also animals living in the water or
living in the ground.

service. Established by Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche,
FPMT touches the lives of beings all over the world. In the early 1970s,
young Westerners inspired by the intelligence and practicality of the
Buddhist approach made contact with these lamas in Nepal and the
organization was born. Now encompassing over 150 Dharma centers,
projects, social services and publishing houses in thirty-three coun-
tries, we continue to bring the enlightened message of compassion,
wisdom, and peace to the world.

We invite you to join us in our work to develop compassion around
