The Ganga Maki Textile Studio is built on the slopes of the foothills of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand. Designed on a fragile terrain, the studio and its ancillary structures are sited naturally
and effortlessly on the lay of the land. Built with the assistance of the resident community, the beautifully crafted architecture does not overpower the landscape and yet, stands
expressively distinct in the context. Built with immediately available materials, workmanship and resources, the buildings provide a dignity of a workspace.
The site plan – a clear and assertive drawing guides the organization of the structures along the contours. Yet, the architecture refrains from making a statement by an approach that
complements the site rather than contrasting it. The presence of skilled human hand is evident in the materials, finishes and structural articulation of the buildings with a strong affinity
towards a sensorial experience.
The structures themselves are minimal but not in a cold, impersonal way. Rather, by stripping down the buildings to the most essential, the architects are able to draw attention to detail – a
haptic architecture that has allegiance to the experience of the place. The structures follow a natural way of building with no resistance or visual judgement.
The building is designed to emerge from the site and its context. The loose arrangement of the plan with a clear logic generates a calm spatial experience. The aesthetic quality of the
architecture is rendered by a dignified workmanship, which offers integrity to the place. While working in rural and peri-urban landscapes, it is important for architecture to neither
overpower, nor be overpowered by the place. The Ganga Maki Textile Studio by Studio Mumbai Architects is therefore is a citation project in The Merit List.
The Nunnery was named ‘Dongyu Gatsal Ling’ by the Spiritual Director His Eminence the 9th Khamtrul Rinpoche
Shedrup Nyima. It means “Garden of the Authentic Lineage” and was chosen because “Dongyu Nyima” was the
name of the previous Khamtrul Rinpoche, who was Tenzin Palmo’s personal Guru.
In Buddhist mythology, Jetvana is the name of one of the Buddha’s most important spatial edifice which when literally translated means: the
grove of Jeta, land donated to the sangha for founding a monastery. It was of semiotic significance that the site offered by Samir Somaiya
owner of the neighboring sugar factory in rural Maharashtra for the Buddhist Learning Center was thickly forested, an idyllic grove of sorts.
The institute was programmed as a spiritual & skill development center for the native Dalit Baudh Ambedkar Buddhist community. The
mandate of Jetavana is to provide a spiritual anchor for their practice of Buddhist thought through meditation and yoga while also imparting
training and skill development for members of the community.
With the mandate of not harming a single tree on site, the sizable program was split up into 6 buildings each situated in gaps between the
heavy planting. Through the design process, two courtyards emerged as links suturing these buildings into a common identity. Working closely
with Hunnarshala, an institution looking to revive and resuscitate local building traditions we collated a material palate that uses rammed
loadbearing walls of basalt stone dust. The stone dust, which is waste from a nearby quarry, is mixed with waste fly ash, a by-product from the
adjoining factory that in the past was paying people to cart the waste fly ash away. Repurposed wood from old shipping vessels act as a roof
structure, with the understructure made of mud rolls, which are also great insulation. The roof itself is finished with clay roof tiles, remnants
from older demolished buildings. The flooring is a traditional mud and dung floor done by members of the local community, which is known to
have antiseptic properties.

Our Learning Center has a room for puzzles, indoor games, art & craft, and a playground. Also, there is a space for carpentry and pottery. We have a non-
conventional learning space including a library and a science laboratory. All these facilities are used by children on a daily basis after their school hours
and all day during weekends and other school holidays.
The Sambhaavnaa Institute of Public Policy and Politics is an alternative learning and living space for those concerned with social and political change.
Nestled in the village of Kandwari, in the lap of the mighty Dhauladhar ranges of Himachal Pradesh, Sambhaavnaa’s primary objective has been to nurture
value-based leadership by encouraging individuals, especially the youth, to discuss and develop a critical perspective on the ideals and ideas that define a
just society.
The Institute was founded under the aegis of the Kumud Bhushan Education Society in 2004. Since 2011, it has emerged as a platform for individuals and
organisations to reflect on and engage with the injustices that prevail in society today.

development of a "Hub for Culture and Consciousness" on a scenic 12-acre tea estate in Nauri
Village, Baijnath, Himachal Pradesh. • Site Visit and Analysis: Conducting a thorough site visit is crucial to understand the existing conditions,
topography, access points, natural features, and cultural context.

wings, cultural plaza, nature sanctuary, and knowledge complex.
• Master Plan: Develop a comprehensive master plan that integrates all key areas, optimizes land use, and
facilitates harmonious interaction between built and natural spaces.
• Circulation and Accessibility: Design accessible pathways, plazas, and connecting elements that encourage
pedestrian movement, community interaction, and connection to nature.
• Sustainable Design Strategies: Implement sustainable principles like rainwater harvesting, solar energy integration,
natural ventilation, and locally sourced materials.
• Landscaping and Hardscaping: Design landscaping that celebrates regional flora, minimizes water consumption,
and promotes biodiversity. Integrate hardscaping elements like retaining walls, steps, and seating areas
seamlessly into the natural environment.
.
B. Architectural Design:
• Main Temple : Design a sacred space inspired by local architectural styles (e.g., Kangra temples), promoting
spiritual reflection and diverse religious practices. Incorporate features like prayer halls, meditation areas,
courtyards, and water elements for ritual use and individual contemplation. Ensure accessibility for all through
ramps, lifts, and inclusive design principles
• . Academic Wings: Design flexible learning spaces adaptable for diverse disciplines, workshops, and cultural
activities. Incorporate elements like open studios, performance spaces, and technology-enabled classrooms to
foster collaboration and engagement. Integrate traditional art and craft elements like murals, woodwork, and
textile patterns into the design.
• Cultural Plaza: Design a vibrant outdoor space for community gatherings, performances, and celebrations.
Consider an amphitheater-style seating arrangement, dedicated performance areas, and spaces for rituals and
customs. Integrate elements like traditional water features, pavilions, and craft markets to reflect local heritage
and encourage interaction.
• Nature Sanctuary: Design a dedicated space for nature immersion, featuring walking paths, meditation gardens,
and areas for outdoor recreation. Prioritize native landscaping, including fruit trees and medicinal plants,
promoting ecological diversity and sustainability. Consider incorporating elements like birdwatching areas, yoga
platforms, and outdoor learning spaces.
• Knowledge Complex: Design a space housing a library, research facilities, and artisan workshops for knowledge
exchange and cultural preservation. Include flexible spaces for exhibitions, demonstrations, and hands-on
learning experiences. Ensure adequate storage and display areas for traditional artifacts, books, and cultural
materials.
