The association between teacher leadership and
student achievement: A meta-analysis
Shen et al (2020) explored the relationship between teacher leadership and student
achievement. This meta-analysis involved educators and students across a variety of schools and
grade levels. The findings revealed a small but significant positive relationship between teacher
leadership and student achievement, with math achievement showing a stronger correlation than
reading achievement. The authors suggested that teacher leadership, particularly in facilitating
improvements in instruction, curriculum, and assessment plays a crucial role in enhancing
student outcomes.

This literature is related to CSTP 6 in that it emphasizes the importance of teacher leadership in
improving teaching and learning practices, ultimately leading to increased student learning and
achievement. As a teacher leader, this article reminds me that I should actively seek opportunities
to influence my colleagues and school community to enhance teaching and learning practices,
thereby contributing to improved student outcomes. I feel that I recently achieved this objective
by leading a teacher’s workshop for self-directed learning resources that can immediately be
used in any virtual classroom.

Distinguishing Self-directed and Self-regulated Learning and
Measuring them in the E-learning Context
Saks & Leijen (2014) explored the distinctions between self-directed learning (SDL) and self-
regulated learning (SRL) within the context of e-learning. The researchers conducted a literature
review of 30 empirical studies focusing on SDL and SRL in virtual learning environments. The
findings revealed confusion and tangled understandings between SDL and SRL terms in literature,
with many similar terms used interchangeably. The authors suggested the importance of
distinguishing between SDL and SRL when developing new instruments and assessments.

This literature is related to CSTP 6.1 in that it emphasizes the reflection of teaching practices to
improve educators' understanding of different learning processes and their ability to design
appropriate learning experiences. As a teacher leader, this article reminds me that I can reflect on
the elements of my practice that promote SDL vs. SRL. I can relay this important distinction to my
teacher teams and share the different resources I have been using to meet these learning goals.
