VTFT LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE
In this lesson students will learn what the different types of poems are, the
Overview structure of a poem, and finally create a poem themselves.
Standards of 5.5 ~ The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of fictional texts,
narrative nonfiction, and poetry. (A~M)
Learning
Objectives Students will be able to identify, analyze, and create different types of poetry.

● “Good Morning everyone, today we are going to talk about poems.”
Introduction/Hook ● Teacher will do a “brain dump” activity, where the students are to tell me
what they know about poetry/poems.
● After the “brain dump,” the teacher is going to bring the slides about
poetry.
● Teacher will review what poetry is before getting into the types of
poems.
● Teacher will carefully review each type of poem including examples for
the students to better understand the set up of that specific poem.
● After going through each of the types of poems, the teacher will ask if
there are any questions on a certain poem type.
Instructional ● Teacher is going to instruct students to collaborate with each other to
Activities & figure out what their favorite type of poem is based on what they learned
today.
Strategies ● Teacher will bring the class back to attention and students will share
their ideas.
● Teachers will then have instructions on how to create their own poem,
which will be the closure.
● Teacher will then pass out the handout where they are going to write
their poem.
● Students are to turn in the poems to me so I can read them and then give
advice on them the next class period I am with them.
Students will create their own poem, based on the facts they learned in the
Closure Activity lesson today.
Assessments No assessment will be taken.
A few students have IEP/504 plans, so I will help them out additionally if they
Accommodations need it. One student is in a wheelchair so if there is any need to move around, I
will help those out.

Comments: Lesson doesn't necessarily ask students to demonstrate understanding of a specific poem, but I assume that's part
of another lesson in this unit/perhaps on the assessment. I love when poetry units allow time for students to write their own
poems, choose what they like, etc.!
