Is Patrick Bateman the best literary character of all time? Patrick Bateman is the one of the
greatest characters of all time. The writer Bret Easton Ellis made this character and made him
show how sigma male is. He made Patrick have some bad things in his character where he was
addicted to drugs and his friends were like him. The main idea of the story to show men
obsession with materialism to conceal their apathy. Patrick always cares about his looks, loves
money rather than most of things because by money he can get whatever he wants, he even
kills people because they make him feel inadequate, usually has a better taste than he does.
“You can always be thinner, look better” The affluent, materialistic, well-dressed exterior of
Patrick Bateman contrasts sharply with his insecure, violently impulsive interior. The
fashionable attire and accessories he wears, his morning grooming routine, his hip and pricey
health club, and the upscale restaurants and nightclubs he frequents are all meticulously
described in his story. Pages and pages of the book are devoted to lengthy lists that are loaded
with brand names and the details of his daily routine. However, his violent acts or hallucinations
are also described in the same tone and are frequently interwoven with this persistent
everyday detail.
“There are no more barriers to cross. All I have in common with the uncontrollable and the
insane, the vicious and the evil, all the mayhem I have caused and my utter indifference toward
it I have now surpassed.” Bateman showed power and privilege through killing people since he
is very rich so he is killing them to show his power and no one is better than him. Through
accelerating and escalating are his violent tendencies. He starts to save up body parts for later
and even develops a cannibalistic streak. He murders people in plain view. He leaves a
confessional message on his lawyer's answering machine before going on a shooting rampage
across New York's streets. Despite this dramatic conclusion to his story, he quickly goes back to
his normal routine. The reader is left to speculate as to whether his acts of violence were
carried out in the actual world or in his delusional other reality.
