The data shows that Mr. Daga-ang, a coconut farmer owns a one hectare of land planted with coconut trees
located at Lanuza S.D.S., mainly in Bocawe having an age of 52 years old. In which he used to practice
mono cropping in his area with a two type of varieties being grown and planted, namely east coast tall
coconut and green dwarf coconut with a 150 trees of tall variety planted on year 2004 and 100 trees dwarf
variety planted way back 2022.

However, the cropping calendar of the two varieties differ from each other since the east coast tall variety
will starts to bear fruit ranging from 6 – 8 years while the dwarf one is half to the cropping calendar of the
east coast tall variety. But they can be both harvested at 3 – 4 months when their mature stage begin.
Furthermore, the inputs that were used are specifically organic fertilizers that are coming from pig and
chicken manure.

Moreover, its yield varies due to the reason that the east coast tall variety can produce a yield ranging from
1,000 - 1950 coconut fruits, while the green dwarf coconut produces a yield ranging from 800 – 1,750
coconut fruits. One reason also why their yield varies is because of the number of trees planted in the area.
After harvesting the coconut fruits will then be sold at the market either in a fresh coconut or copra that are
mainly sold in the market when the price is in high range particularly Php 43.00 per kilo in the area of
Madrid, Cantilan, and Tandag which are the municipality that copra are sold at a high price rate. Therefore,
in every harvest they can get around 1,800 – 3,700 coconut fruits within the one hectare of land area since
the two variety can yield around 60 -70 coconuts per palm.
Mr. Daga-ang chooses to cultivate coconut trees because according to him it has a very low maintenance
cost and can be an excellent source of income as an alternative to rice since they can harvest fruits 4 – 3
times annually. According to Mr. Daga-ang he chooses to plant east tall coconut because it is the only
available variety that their area have way back year 2,000. However, when some coconuts variety were
available due to some genetic manipulation in the coconut trees dwarf coconuts start to emerge. Then with
that he planned to grow a dwarf variety because according to him it is way more very convenient to maintain
from growing especially to harvesting. Since it is a dwarf variety he do not need to pay for labor anymore
just to harvest the fruits because he also mentioned that he have two son namely Jayson Dave S. Daga-ang
and Jerome Anthony S. Daga-ang that can help him to assist and help during harvesting time. In this way
he can able to have a low labor cost except to the tall variety which really need to spend a labor cost in
every harvesting time.
