Firstly I thank God for giving me the knowledge and understanding to complete this task.
Secondly I extend a huge thank you to my teacher, friends and family members who helped me
in the completion of this SBA.
Introduction
In this school based assessment (SBA) I explored significant ways in which we can support
black people in the Jamaican society.
Plan of investigation
Theme: racism
Sub-topic: why we should support black people in the Jamaican society.

In the Jamaican society people with darker complexxion are often seen as ugly. I chose this topic to show
reasons why we should support black lives in the Jamaican society and reasons we can.
This SBA will benefit me by improving my writing skills and to teach me more about racism and reasons
why I should have more confidence in my self to embrace my darker complexion ani why we should
support eachother lifestyle as black people in society.
I will gather my information by researching on the internet and also by interviewing teenagers in my
community. The information I collect will be use to show various ways in which we should support black
people. It will also show why we should support them and how we can.
Artifacts

Artifact 1. Poem
"Support" by Lauren Kim" https://www.modernmississauga.com/main/2020/6/10/a-poem-on-racism-by-
lauren-kim?format=amp
Hey, you.
Support the black community
But this is not an opportunity
To profit or to boost your platform
Because that could confuse or misinform

Oh, and support the aboriginals too

(they’ve got it worst than me and you)
But black lives is what matters right now
Research when to help and how

But don’t ask a black person because they need their space
Verify information so it’s not out of place
But only by official organizations
And not by random people’s creations
And make sure if they do, they’re black
Because people will go back and back
Into picking apart everything you said
Who said it, why they did it and if it’s the message they want to spread

Also, listen to the black people in the community

All that matters is the unity
Share information but not obnoxiously
It can be rejected or taken as camaraderie
Do something and let others know so they can do it too
But also do it quietly so it won’t be misconstrued

Take your words and get offline

You should be living this all the time
Double check what others are sayin’
And don’t believe everyone who wants to weigh in

Talk to people about anti black racism

And ignore the haters and harsh criticism
But don’t just talk to the people who agree
And don’t just do it because it’s trendy

Fundraise money for black organizations

But don’t just go looking for collaborations
It might seem like a money grab
Or interpreted as a ploy to nab
Support black businesses but also support all businesses too
Hey, stop making this about all about you

Continue your activism and support

But make sure you follow those headlines to court

Say something, please DO something, please

But don’t be obnoxious so everyone sees

Don’t announce it to the public, just do it and live it

But don’t forget to tell people how to get involved with it

Say something but don’t say too much and don’t say too little
And say it in the right way as to not diminish or belittle

Don’t refrain from saying anything at all

But if you do say something, make sure you say it all
Make sure it’s well-said or written out
But not if you’re doing it for the hype and the clout
Because everyone will pick it apart
Then we will be right back to the start
Because of this mindset, that view you forgot
But don’t ask a black person because they’re dealing with a lot

Okay, okay, let me get this straight

You want me to come and participate
But do this, don’t do that and do more but not over the top
It’s not our battle to fight but together we must stop
So talk, donate, share, but don’t get caught up in the chatter
I’m beginning to wonder if what I support will even matter

Reflection 1

The first artifact that explored my topic is a poem published on June 10, 2020 titled "support" by
Lauren kim" which outlined the importance of supporting black lives and highlighted that we should listen
to black voices, supports their small businesses and organizations. The poet explained "support the black
community" this shows us that our persona believe it is important to respect and support black lives in
society.
The second artifact that explored my topic is a song published on February 17, 2022 titled "black is
beautiful" by dancehall artist Shaneil Muir. This song statetes various reasons why black lives should be
respected and why we should be proud to embrace who we are. Shaneil Muir explained “black is
beautiful” and encourage parents to tell their children black is beautiful. This shows that our songwriter is
all about encouraging black people to embrace their dark complexion because they are indeed beautiful
regardless of their complexion.
The third artifact that explored my topic is a picture. This picture states that “black lives matter”. This
statement serves as a cry against injustice in society. advocating for equality, respect and fair treatment
for black individuals in society. This statement also serves as a demand for society to value and support
the lives and humanity of black people as much as it value and support the lives and humanity of people
with lighter complexion.
Reflection 2

Based on the poem titled "support" by Lauren Kim. After reading this poem it shows that the poet cares
more about supporting people from the black community, which caught my interest as this is the purpose
of my research and what it is about. The poem is written in standard english to expand the understanding
of racism and how we can support black lives.
In artifact 2 a song titled “black is beautiful” by dancehall artist Shaneil Muir, it was written in the form of
informal language, which is patios a well known Jamaican creole which indicates that the songwriter is
mainly speaking to people of the Jamaican society. The song writer also used the figure of speech
repetition to encourage black people that their dark complection is beautiful. The song writer repeated the
phrase “black is beautiful” multiple times to indicate that you are beautiful regardless of your complection
and stated that you doesn't need to be white to be a pretty girl.
In artifact 3 the writing on the picture which states “black lives matter” is written in the text feature of bold.
This was written in the text feature of bold to indicate important information, use for strong emphasis or
most importantly to capture the readers attention.
Reflection 3
Completing this SBA helped me to become a better English student by improving my reading, writing and
researching skills. my time management skills has also been enhanced as I am working better in groups. I
also learned ways in which we can support people with darker complexion such as
