FIRST WEEK in The Phil

FIRST WEEK in The Phil
June 2021, Monday at around 8:00 am, we arrived at Sorsogon City Hall to notify the HR about our first
day of on-the-job training. Together with Ms. Arlene, the HR__________, we headed to the Sorsogon
City Engineer’s Office to formally introduce ourselves and meet the OIC, the employees, the workplace,
as well as the working environment.
The 240-hour duration of our training started with a brief introduction from Engr. Domer, the
Chief_______. The briefing was cut short due to an urgent business they have to attend. Then we had a
meeting with the acting building official, Engr. Joelan Aguirre and Engr. Alaine Lasala, about the
company’s profile, the workplace and the usual services they provide.
Engr. Alaine presented us the requirements for the application and issuance of building permit. One of
the most important things we learned is that before we legally begin a construction, we need to apply
for a building permit. Having permit proves that your project drawings have been cleared and met all
necessary specifications.
We were then tasked to arrange the clients’ requirements for building permits. We’ve seen familiar
names along the process, we study the papers, and another thing we realized is that complying these
requirements is very costly.
We spent the next few days compiling and arranging the building permit requirements until Engr.
Brando, one of the civil engineers tasked us to estimate the quantity of formworks and number of rebars
needed for a proposed construction of stage (platform) located at Sorsogon Provincial Gymnasium. This
was our very first task.
The first week of our internship revolved around the office. We managed to speak respectfully with
different people like engineers, architects, and common people. We learned how to operate the printing
and Xerox machine, a very simple task yet vital in a busy workplace.
Although at first, looking at social media and seeing our friends do their training on the actual field, with
heavy machinery, equipment, and engineers along with them, we somehow felt that we’re missing a lot
of opportunities. Opportunities to learn and experience the real life situations on field. But over time,
we realized that what we’re doing is also important. We’ve come to realized that permits are required
for nearly everything in our nation to confirm the validity of a transaction or the rightful owner of a
piece of property. Without these permits, any structure whether commercial, industrial, or residential
will not commence its construction.
