Marcelo H.

Del Pilar wrote the "Dasalan at Tocsohan" as a creative and fearless revolution of
the hypocrisy of the Spanish friars and is also another example of how he made use of the
different litearary works to denounce authority. The "Dasalan at Tocsohan" is a parody on the
friar's greed, hypocrisy and licentiousness. It consists of the parodies of the Sign of the Cross,
The Act of Contrition, The Lord's Prayer, The Hail Mary and the Ten Commandments of God. In
the "Dasalan at Tocsohan" the Spanish friars used God for their greed of money and
squandering the wealth of the society especially the Filipinos. The friars back then, ask for
compensation or money when Filipinos wanted a wedding, baptism and even burial. Del Pilar
said in his “Sampung Utos ng mga Fraile,” in the 5th Commandment, it states “Do not die if you
do not have money for burial.” It is one proof that even when you’re not any more physically
present in this world, you still need money to die. You still need money to pay the funeral
services, and of course, you need to pay the priest for his grateful act of blessing the spirit of
your lost loved one. Also at weddings, for the Spanish friars, “To gratify a couple’s love to God,
you must need money.” As we all know, during the Spanish colonization, Filipinos became
slaves and does not know the truth that for every deed, sacrifices and sharing, it no longer goes
to God and that the Spanish friars are seizing it.
