(QUESTION TAGS, INDIRECT QUESTIONS)

1. QUESTION TAGS. Watch the video about question tags and answer, complete or circle the correct
alternative in the questions that follow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1ILi7_JfIQ

a) We separate the question tag from the main sentence (statement) by using a __comma____.
b) In relation to the formation, if the main sentence is positive, the tag is ___negative___. In the same
way, if the main sentence is negative, the tag question is __positive___.
Below are two examples:
1. _____It’s a very cold day, isn’t it?__________________________
2. ____I haven’t seen my shoes, have you?____________________
c) In relation to the verb BE, if the main sentence has the verb be, the tag question
( X ) HAS ( ) DOESN’T HAVE the verb be as well.
Examples:

2. __These chillies are really spicy, aren’t they?________
d) In relation to AM, the tag question is formed with ____are ____.

e) Talking about AUXILIARIES, if the main sentence has an auxiliary verb, the question tag
( X ) WILL HAVE ( ) WON’T HAVE an auxiliary verb.
Example: ______You are working late tonight, aren’t you? ________________
f) When we don’t have an auxiliary or a be in the main sentence, we only have a main verb, we should use
____do_____, ____does___, or _____did____.
Example: _____Your parents live in NY, don’t they? ___________
g) With imperatives, use ___will_____ in the tag.
Example: _______Come here, will you? ____________________________
h) In relation to intonation, it can be ___rising ____ or ____falling ___.
We use rising intonation when ____we are asking a question, we don’t know the information _____
We use falling intonation when ______we want confirmation, it is not a real question _
i) Write rising or falling:
1. The information is clear: ___falling___ intonation.
2. It is a real question: __rising___ intonation.
3. It is not a question, you Just want support to what you think: __falling___ intonation.
4. You don’t really know if that information is correct: __rising___.
2. INDIRECT QUESTIONS. Make a new sentence from these questions. Follow the example.

Example: Where has Tom gone? Do you know where Tom has gone?

Direct question (Aux. + subj) → indirect question + affirm. Structure (subject + verb)
