Design thinking
Design thinking is a non-linear, iterative process that teams use to understand
users, challenge assumptions, redefine problems and create innovative
solutions to prototype and test. It is most useful to tackle ill-defined or
unknown problems and involves five phases: Empathize, Define, Ideate,
Prototype and Test. It also refers to the set of cognitive, strategic and practical
procedures used by designers in the process of designing, and to the body of
knowledge that has been developed about how people reason when engaging
with design problems.
Design thinking is also associated with prescriptions for the innovation of
products and services within business and social contexts.
Step 1- EMPATHIZE
The first stage of the design thinking process is empathy. During this stage,
design teams set aside their own biases and work to gain a deeper
understanding of real users and their needs—often through direct observation
and engagement.
Empathize is one of the most crucial phases of design thinking. After all, how
can you hope to solve a user’s problem if you don’t understand who the user is
and what they want? Empathy creates an emotional bridge between designers
and target users, one that facilitates the kind of deep user insights at the heart
of human-based design thinking.
When discussing the "empathy" of Hydrate Well we're essentially considering
how it addresses human needs or concerns.
What is hydrate Well?
Hydrate well is a hot and cold temperature controlling water bottle is a
reusable bottle designed with double-wall insulation to maintain the
temperature of beverages for extended periods. It keeps hot drinks hot and
cold drinks cold, thanks to its insulating properties. The tight-sealing lid
prevents heat exchange and spills, making it durable and portable for use on
the go. These bottles offer convenience and versatility for enjoying beverages
at the desired temperature throughout the day.
How does it empathize?
 Prioritizing well-being: The brand recognizes that hydration is essential
for overall well-being, including physical and mental health. By providing
bottles that keep beverages at the desired temperature, Hydrate Well
aims to support users in their journey towards a healthier lifestyle.
 Empowering users: Hydrate Well empowers users to take control of their
hydration by offering reliable and versatile water bottles that can
accompany them wherever they go, whether it's to work, the gym, or on
outdoor adventures.
 Enhancing convenience: By keeping beverages hot or cold for extended
periods, Hydrate Well bottles offer convenience to users who may not
have immediate access to hot or cold drinks throughout the day,
ensuring they can enjoy their preferred beverages whenever they want.
 Encouraging sustainability: By promoting the use of reusable water
bottles, Hydrate Well contributes to reducing single-use plastic waste,
aligning with environmentally conscious practices and fostering a sense
of responsibility towards the planet.

Survey
Step 2- DEFINE
The second step is to define the problem. In this phase, designers analyze the
data gathered during the previous stage to identify and define the issue with a
clear and concise problem statement. Synthesize your observations and
identifying the core issues that need to be addressed. It's about framing the
problem in a way that guides the rest of the design process.
The problems that I have found after surveying are as follows:
 Inadequate temperature control: Users might express dissatisfaction with
existing water bottles' inability to maintain their beverages at the desired
temperature for extended periods. This could include complaints about drinks
not staying hot enough or becoming lukewarm too quickly, or not staying cold
enough throughout the day.

 Poor insulation: Users may report issues with the insulation of their current
water bottles, such as condensation forming on the exterior, making it
uncomfortable to hold, or heat transferring from the outside environment,
affecting the temperature of their beverages.

 Difficulty in cleaning: Users may express frustration with cleaning their water
bottles, especially if they have narrow openings or hard-to-reach areas that
are challenging to clean thoroughly. This could lead to concerns about hygiene
and the buildup of odors or residue over time.

 Lack of versatility: Users might desire a water bottle that can accommodate
both hot and cold beverages, as well as different types of drinks such as coffee,
tea, water, or smoothies. They may feel limited by their current bottles'
inability to handle a variety of beverages.

 Durability concerns: Some users may have experienced issues with the
durability of their water bottles, such as leaks, cracks, or dents occurring over
time. They may be looking for a more robust and long-lasting solution.

 Environmental impact: There may be growing awareness among users about

the environmental impact of single-use plastic bottles, leading them to seek
out reusable alternatives. They may express a desire for a water bottle that is
not only functional but also environmentally friendly.
Step3 – IDEATE
The ideation stage is where designers start to explore solutions. Ideas in this
stage will ultimately become prototypes that can be tested with your target
audience. Generate a wide range of creative ideas to solve the problem defined
in the previous step.
Therefore, the question is: How can all of the difficulties listed in step two
above be overcome?
 Improved insulation: Utilize advanced insulation materials and techniques to
enhance temperature retention, ensuring that hot beverages stay hot and cold
beverages stay cold for extended periods.

 Enhanced design for portability: Redesign the bottle to be more lightweight

and compact while still accommodating the desired volume of liquid.
Incorporate features like a slim profile, ergonomic shape, and integrated
carrying handle or strap for easier transportation.

 Easy-to-clean design: Design the bottle with a wide-mouth opening for

effortless cleaning and filling. Consider removable components or dishwasher-
safe materials to simplify the cleaning process and maintain hygiene.

 Versatility: Create a bottle with the ability to handle various types of

beverages, including hot and cold drinks, through innovative design features
such as interchangeable lids, modular components, or multi-layer insulation
technology.

 Durability: Utilize durable materials such as stainless steel or impact-resistant

plastics for the bottle construction, reinforced seams, and leak-proof seals to
ensure long-lasting performance even in rugged environments.

 Environmental sustainability: Manufacture the bottle from eco-friendly

materials such as BPA-free plastics or stainless steel and promote its reusable
nature to reduce single-use plastic waste. Additionally, consider implementing
recycling programs or using recycled materials in the bottle's production
process.
Step 4 – PROTOTYPE
Prototyping involves creating rough, low detail and functionality
representations of the solutions. These prototypes are used to quickly and
cheaply test ideas and gather feedback from users. The first manufactured
product to address our issue is the prototype. A prototype does not have to be
a physical version; one can even be digital, so the digital representation of the
product is presented below:
Step 5-TESTING
The testing phase of the design thinking process involves real users and real
user feedback. During this phase, prototypes are given to participants to try
out. Testing reveals what is or isn’t working. prototypes are evaluated with real
users to gather feedback and insights. This feedback loop helps refine and
iterate on the solutions until they effectively address the user's needs.
This product is just an idea for me I don’t have the actual product but through
my expectation the estimated societal result after testing such a product would
likely be positive, as it addresses various needs and preferences while
potentially contributing to broader societal goals such as sustainability, health,
and efficiency. However, factors such as affordability, accessibility, and
marketing efforts would also influence the extent of its societal impact.

Some key indicators of a successful test might include:

>Retaining heat: The water bottle should be able to maintain the desired
temperature (hot or cold) for an extended period, ideally without significant
fluctuations.
>Insulation effectiveness: The exterior of the water bottle should remain at a
comfortable temperature for handling, indicating that the insulation is effective
at preventing heat transfer.
>Leakage prevention: The water bottle should not leak or sweat excessively,
ensuring that it can be used without causing inconvenience or damage to
surrounding surfaces.
>Durability: After repeated use and testing, the water bottle should continue to
perform reliably without degradation in its ability to control temperature.
>User satisfaction: Feedback from users involved in the testing process can
provide valuable insights into the overall experience and effectiveness of the
product.
