CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Reading comprehension is the ability to read, internalize, understand, and interact
with the text you are reading. It involves critical thinking and deductive reasoning to make
meaning of an entire piece of writing. Reading comprehension skills are essential for
students, professionals, and anyone who wants to read for pleasure or information. It’s not
just about phonological awareness and reading words aloud; it encapsulates language skills
such as grammar (syntax), vocabulary, and semantics, to understand the meaning of texts.
You make inferences and form an opinion about the read text. (Paul Nowak, 2022)
The level of Reading Comprehension has a significant impact on Academic
performance. Students’ reading comprehension skills are positively correlated with their
academic performance in a different subject area. Research shown that the greater the
students' reading comprehension the better their academic achievement.
However, poor reading comprehension has a negative impact on students’ academic
performance. This can hinder their ability to gain necessary knowledge and skills ,leading to
lower academic achievement.
The key aim of this research is to develop an understanding about the importance of
developing reading comprehension skills among Senior High School Students of Southern
Masbate Roosevelt College for them to have a better academic performance.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aimed to know the importance of Reading Comprehension to the Academic
Performance of Senior High School Students of Southern Masbate Roosevelt College .

This study aims to answer the following research questions:


1. What is the reading comprehension level of the respondents?
2. Is there a significant relationship between the Reading Comprehension level and academic
Performance of the respondents?
3. What is the importance of Reading Comprehension to the students' academic excellence?

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The main objective of the study was to develop an understanding about the importance
of Reading Comprehension to the Academic performance of the Senior High School Students
of Southern Masbate Roosevelt College. The objective of the study was to develop a level of
understanding about how reading comprehension affects the Academic performance of the
students.
The methodology was limited to descriptive methods and survey questionnaire as the
tool for data collection. The respondents were limited to senior High School students at
Southern Masbate Roosevelt College. The period of the study was also limited to the school
year 2024-2025.
LOCALE OF THE STUDY

The local of the study was Southern Masbate Roosevelt College located at
Katipunan, Placer, Masbate.
Placer is a second-class municipality in the province of Masbate, Philippines.
According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 44,418 people in 9,035 households.
Placer was created as a municipality from the barrio of the same name, which was
used to belong to Cataingan, Masbate by virtue of Republic Ma Act No.292.passed June
16,1948.
Placer belongs to the Luzon group of Islands. The municipality of Placer is seated
about 68 km south-east of province capital City of Masbate and about 437 km south-east of
Philippine main capital Manila.
Regarding urbanization, Placer is classified as partly urban. Placer occupies an area of
193.03 km. By the end of 2007, Placer was the home of 48,469 residents. Thus, on an
average 251.10 people are living on one kilometer.
Administratively, the Municipality of Placer is subdivided into 35 barangays namely;
Aguada, Ban-ao, Burabod, Cabangcalan, Calumpang, Camayabsan, Daanlunsod, Dangpanan,
Daraga, Guin-awayan, Guinhan-ayan, Katipunan, Libas, Locso-an, Luna, Mahayag,
Mahayahay, Manlot-od, Matagangtang, Naboctot, Nagarao, Naocondiot, Pasiagon, Pili,
Poblacion, Puro, Quibrada, San Marcos, Santa Cruz, Taboc, Tan-awan, Taverna, Tubod and
Villa-Inocencio.
Katipunan is a quarter of Masbate, Bicol and has about 3,190 residents. Katipunan is
situated near to the quarter Poblacion and the town Placer. The Baranggay captain now is
Doriz Racaza.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study aims to know the importance of Reading Comprehension to the Academic
performance of Senior high school students at Southern Masbate Roosevelt College. And
aims to know how the reading comprehension skills affects the students’ academic
performance in school. This study is significant to the following:

 To the school Principal


To impose some activities and guidelines that would help the students to improve their
Reading Comprehension skills which includes both reading and understanding concepts as
well as to be able to excel in their academic performances.

 To the Teachers
To be able to focus on a certain area that would enable the students to be equipped in
dealing with other people through the medium of communication including their Reading
Comprehension skills to be enhanced and developed

 To the Students
To be able to find ways themselves to improve and be aware of the factors that would
help them uphold their skills in Reading Comprehension.

 To School Administrators
The result of this study will help the school Administrators to implement or innovate
activities that would lessen the rate of non-readers to the respective school.
 To the future Researchers
To improve once this present study and to focus conducting studies which the researchers
were not able to find out in this research.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Importance- the quality of being significant, valued, or necessary in a particular situation

Reading Comprehension- is the ability to process written text, understand its meaning, and to
integrate with what the reader already knows.

Academic Performance - the measurement of the learning level achieved by students and is
considered a key indicator of the effectiveness of educational institutions.

Students - a person formally engaged in learning, especially one enrolled in a school or


college.
