THE INFLUENCE OF GENDER AND SCHOOL LOCATION ON ACADEMIC

PERFORMANCE OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN RINGIM


EDUCATION ZONE, JIGAWA STATE.

ABSTRACT

The study examined whether gender and school location influenced senior secondary
school students’ academic performance in the Ringim Education Zone of Jigawa state.
The populations comprised of Senior Secondary Class Two (SS II) Students in public
secondary schools in Ringim local government Area of Jigawa State and a sample of
329 students were randomly selected using stratified sampling technique. Students’
School Location Inventory (SSLI) was used to collect data in the study independent t-
test statistics was used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that there was a
significant difference in academic performance of rural and urban students. However,
there was no significant difference in academic performance of male and female
students in the Ringim Education Zone. It was concluded that location of schools
influenced the performances of senior secondary school students. The study
recommended that the government should provide all necessary materials and
equipment to the rural schools as it was available in the urban schools in the state.
