The Women's World Cup was originally the brainchild of the FIFA president joão
Havelange. The first tournament was hosted in China in 1991, with twelve teams
sent to represent their countries. The 1995 FIFA Women's World Cup was held in
Sweden with twelve teams. Over 650,000 spectators attended the 1999 FIFA
Women's World Cup in the United States and nearly one billion viewers from
seventy countries tuned in to watch sixteen countries vie for the title.

In the 1999 edition, one of the most famous moments of the tournament was
American defender Brandi Chatain's victory celebration after scoring the Cup-
winning penalty shot against Cina. She took off her T-shirt and waved it over her
head as men frequently do, showing her muscular torso. The 1999 final in the Rose
Bowl in Pasadena, California had an attendance of 90,185, a world record for a
women's sporting event.

The 1999 and 2003 Women's World Cup were both held in the United States; in
2003 China was supposed to host it but the tournament was moved because of
SARS. As compensation, China retained its automatic qualification to the 2003
tournament as host nation and was automatically chosen to host the 2007
Women's World Cup. The host country for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup will
be delided by vote.

VIII. SPEAKING
Answer the following questions.
Possible answers
1. Do you like playing sports?
I don’t always play sports, but when I do I don’t mind playing them. Some sports I like
include football, badminton and basketball.
2. Do you think doing sports is a good way to relax?
Yes, I do. I think some sports are very helpful at relieving stress. Some people like jogging,
others like fishing, or anything that allows them to participate without having any outside
interference. I also play badminton or go swimming whenever I’m under stress. After
playing such sports, I find myself more relaxed and have more energy to cope with the
stress.
3. What sports are popular in your country?
Football is by far the most popular sport in Vietnam. It is common to see many young
people wearing jerseys for teams that they support like Manchester United and PSG.
4. Do you think it is important to play a sport?
Well, I don’t think so. I do believe that it’s beneficial to play some kinds of sports as it can
improve your fitness level and overall health, but it should not be so compulsory. Some
people can spend time taking part in workshops like learning to arrange flowers instead of
playing sports.

SCRIPT
Radio presenter: Well, that’s about it for this month’s edition of Book Club. We hope
you’ve enjoyed hearing our discussion this week. Now it’s time for me to tell you about our
super new competition. And I have to say, you won’t believe the prize we’ve got for you
this month. Would you believe we’re giving you the chance to win your own computer.
And not just a computer – it comes with a colour printer as well. This is a competition you
really have to enter, isn’t it? So, what do you need to know? And what do you have to do?
All you have to do is enter our short story competition. It couldn’t be easier. We want you
to write a short story up to 1,500 words long. The rules are very simple. In fact, they could
hardly be simpler. We want lots of entries. What you have to do is sit down and write a
short crime story, using your own ideas – and they can be as strange and wonderful as
you like, in fact, the stranger, the better. But, and this is important, everything that
happens in your story must be in the future. So, just let your imagination fly away. and
start writing, because this could be your lucky month.

GEN1_LT02_GROUP4_ U2_ COMPETITIONS_ 6

Send your entries to me, Joy Jones, at the usual address. Put your name, address,
telephone number and, very important this, so don’t forget, your age, at the end of your
story. Oh, and I forgot to say, for this competition there’s an age limit. You must be under
eighteen when you enter. Make sure you post your story in time to reach me by the 8th of
March. So good luck, good writing and good reading until next month.
