Making Comparisons
1-4. Make a comparison by using the word in brackets to complete the sentence.
(1) The architecture in London is far ______________ than in St Petersburg. (modern)

(4) The picture on a High Definition screen is a considerably ______________ than a normal TV

5-10. Add one word to the following sentences to make them correct.

1. more modern Modern has 2 syllables but does not end in –y, so we need to use “more”

3. more strenuous “strenuous” as got 3 syllables so we need to add “more” to make the
comparison.
4. sharper “sharp” has 1 syllable so requires the -er suffix to make a comparison
5. Three times as many people own a mobile phone in the US as in France.
Remember, if you use 1 “as”, you must use a second “as”.
6. That was by far the worst film I have ever seen.
We use “far” with adjectives – “It is far hotter in Australia than Iceland”.
However, we use “by far” with superlatives “Australia is by far the hottest
country I have ever lived in”

You always need to use “the” when using a superlative.
