Introduction Chloride TRINERGY

1. INTRODUCTION
This Installantion Manual contains information about installing, operating and using the Chlo-
ride TRINERGY Uninterruptible Power System (UPS).
This equipment must be installed and operated by qualified personnel, who are advised to read
this document before starting.
Thereafter, it must be kept and referred to whenever it is necessary to carry out work on the
UPS.

1.1. Notes to the CE Declaration of Conformity

Chloride TRINERGY conforms to the following European directives:

2006/95/EEC
Directive of the council for adaptation of the legal regulations of the member states regarding
electrical equipment for use within specific voltage limits (superseding the 73/23/EEC and suc-
cessive amendments).

2004/108/EEC
Directive of the council for adaptation of the legal regulations of the member states regarding
electromagnetic compatibility (superseding the 89/336/EEC and successive amendments).
Conformity is established through compliance with the following standards:
• IEC/EN 62040-1
• IEC/EN 62040-2
Additional information regarding adherence to these directives is included in the appendices
NSR and EMC of the Declaration of Conformity. If needed, the Declaration of Conformity can
be requested from Chloride.

OPERATING MODES Chloride TRINERGY

2. OPERATING MODES
2.1. Functions
Trinergy incorporates the three existing standard topologies in one transformer-Free UPS:

Maximum Power Control mode (IEC 62040-3 VFI):

is the double conversion mode which provides the highest level of power conditioning. It pro-
tects the load from all types of electrical network disturbances using a greater amount of ener-
gy. Efficiency at full load with the latest transformer free technology is over 95% (see Fig. 1 - on
page 7).

Figure 1 - Maximum Power Control (VFI)

MaximumEnergy Saving mode ( IEC 62040-3 VFD):

this mode detects when the need for conditioning is non-existent and allows energy flow to
pass through the bypass line. In this case efficiency reaches 99% (see Fig. 2 - on page 7).

Figure 2 - MaximumEnergy Saving (VFD)

User Manual - 10H52184UM01 - rev. 3 - 03/2011 Page 7

Chloride TRINERGY OPERATING MODES

High Efficiency & Power Conditioning mode (IEC 62040-3 VI):

compensate the output load THDi, output load PF.
It reduces mains disturbances such as sags and swells. The load is supplied by the bypass line,
the inverter works as an active filter, compensating the reactive power required by the load. In
a typical condition this mode will have an effiency between 96 and 98%, depending on the load
type (e.g. non linear, linear etc.) and the input mains conditions (see Fig. 3 - on page 8).

Figure 3 - High Efficiency & Power Conditioning (VI)

Battery operation:
in this operating mode, the connected load is supplied from the batteries. In the event of pow-
er failure, battery operation is automatically activated and supplies the loads without interrup-
tion. If the power failure lasts longer than 30 s, the UPS signals a fault condition.
From this operating mode, the UPS automatically returns to VFI operation within the backup
time once the mains supply returns. If the power failure lasts longer than the loads can be sup-
plied by the battery, the UPS provides relevant information via its interfaces. Computers can be
automatically powered down with additional software (optional) (see Fig. 4 - on page 8).

Maintenance bypass:
in this operating mode, the connected loads are supplied directly from the mains supply. The
touch screen LCD is disabled.
Maintenance Bypass is used to supply the connected loads during maintenance work on the
UPS (see Fig. 5 - on page 9).

Warning
To avoid overheating inside the UPS, do not operate the unit with the rectifier run-
ning, the Inverter switched off and the Bypass switch open for extended periods.

Figure 7 - System Overview with distributed batteries

The UPS System is made by several cores. Each core is a complete UPS.
The number of cores depends by the rating of the UPS.

2.3.1. Components

Each core of the system consists of the following components:

• Rectifier - Provides regulated DC voltage supply to the inverter and booster/charger.
• Inverter - Provides a controlled AC output voltage to the critical load
• Booster/charger - Charges the battery when the mains supply is present. Supplies the
inverter using energy from the battery when mains supply is not present.
• Power Interface - Controls the by pass static switch.
• Maintenance Bypass - Disconnects the Power Module during servicing, without inter-
rupting the supply to the load
• EMC filter

Chloride TRINERGY OPERATING MODES

2.4. Commissioning
2.4.1. Forming
If the UPS devices have not been used for a period of more than one year, the intermediate cir-
cuit capacitors must be reformed. If the UPS devices are commissioned within one year after
delivery (check nameplate), this action is not necessary.

Contact customer service if the intermediate circuit capacitors need to be

reformed.
Carry out commissioning as follows:

2.4.2. Initial ckecks

• Check that the UPS is connected according to the Installation Manual and the local elec-
tric codes
• Ensure that the ventilation grilles are unobstructed
• Ensure that any external switches are in the OFF (0) position
• Ensure that any external batteries are disconnected

Danger
Do not connect any devices that may overload the UPS or draw direct current from
it.

Notice
If these instructions are not observed correctly, problems may be experienced
with the electrical supply.
2.4.3. Connect the batteries
Before the system starts, ensure that the UPS battery connections polarity is correct.
Wrong connections can damage the system and endanger operator safety.

This operation must be carried out by authorized personnel and with the external
battery disconnected. Once the touch screen LCD shows that the rectifier is “ON”,
close the battery switch (QS9) on the UPS. The voltage on the UPS side of the exter-
nal battery isolator device must be the same polarity as the battery voltage checked
before leaving QS9 open with the battery connected. Once the polarity has been
checked it is possible to close the external battery isolator device and QS9 when the
rectifier is “ON”.

2.4.4. Switch to operation mode
The UPS always starts in VFI mode. Trinergy starts to work in automatic mode after the mains
characteristics have been monitored for a suitable period (for details refer to the document
“Trinergy Functioning Modes”).

2.4.5. Operating mode selection
Trinergy can be forced to operate in VFI mode (double conversion) by SERVICE when requested
by the Customer.

Maintenance Chloride TRINERGY

3. MAINTENANCE
3.1. Maintenance intervals
In order to keep the equipments at its nominal reliability, Chloride recommends that regular
maintenance checks be carried out on site by an authorized customer Service once or twice a
year. Details of the required checks are provided by the Service organization.

3.2. Disposal of batteries

When the expected lifetime of the batteries has expired, they must be replaced by the author-
ized Service organization. Exhausted batteries are classified as “harmful toxic waste” and as
such must be disposed in accordance with the applicable regulations for the given Country.

Note:
The typical useful lifetime of the battery varies from 3 to 5 years, depending on the ambient
temperature and usage.

3.3. Service addresses

The Service organization contacts (telephone and fax numbers) can be found on the last page
of this manual.

3.4. Decommisioning
3.4.1. Taking out of service
Switch to service bypass:
• Switch the UPS to Maintenance Bypass operation (see Table 4 on page 17)
Disconnect batteries:
• Open the external battery isolator or battery switch (if present).
• Before continuing work, check the voltage at the battery terminals and at the mains
input and wait until these have dropped below safety values. Failure to do this may lead to
severe electrical shock.

The UPS is now fully de-energized and can be decommissioned.
