INTRODUCTION
Isn’t it nice to have supportive parents? To have people push and support you in
anything, especially in your academics. Well, parental involvement is one major factor of a
child’s learning which positively relates to their academic performance. As it implies, parental
involvement refers to the participation of a parent/guardian in a child’s education. It can be seen
through the financial, emotional, and educational support a child is provided by the parents or
any family member in their household. As education not only stops within school territory, it is
also observed within the livelihood of what a child is exposed to. Academic performance is one
of education's most essential goals, and it has always been influenced by a variety of factors
such as support from the parents and the school atmosphere. Parental involvement plays an
essential role for a number of reasons, including a child's academic success, positive behavior
and social skills, communication skills, emotional support, and etc.
Grolnick and Slowiaczek (1994) stated that parental involvement in the form of
autonomy support and involvement in decision-making, positively influenced a student’s
motivation and academic success. When a student is unmotivated and certain that a goal is
unattainable, there is simply no reason for a student to try and attempt that goal. But with a
parent’s encouragement and support in the form of cheering, pats and kisses, or positive and
encouraging words, it can drive a student’s motivation and enables them to put in extra effort in
a certain goal — creating a pavement for academic success and academic growth and nurture
hidden potentialities.
It is by nature that parents’ are our first teachers. As our primary educators and role
models, they are capable of developing our attitude, values, morals, etc. Parents that place a
high value on education and exhibit a strong work ethic set a good example for their kids.
Children are more likely to imitate their parents' values of learning, to prioritize education, and to
pursue academic ambitions, and to succeed in their own academic endeavors.
Overall, parental involvement plays a significant role in a student’s academic
performance. With the active participation of the parent in a child’s education, parents are able
to monitor their academic progress, provide support and assistance, and contribute to their
success and beyond.
