CASE STUDY

GRADE 10
CH3. PAIR OF LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES

CASE STUDY : 1

A computer animation below shows a cat moving in a straight line. Its height y metres above the
ground is given by 8x – 3y = -9 where x is the time in seconds after it starts moving. In the same
animation, a mouse starts to move at the same time as the cat and its movement is given by -3x
+y = 1.

1. Will the mouse and the cat be able to meet at one point?
2. What condition is used to justify your answer?
3. If they meet then after how many seconds?
OR
If they meet then at what height ?

CASE STUDY : 2
From Bengaluru bus stand, if Riddhima buys 2 tickets to Malleswaram and 3
tickets to Yeswanthpur, then total cost is Rs 46; but if she buys 3 tickets to
Malleswaram and 5 tickets to Yeswanthpur, then total cost is Rs 74. Consider the
fares from Bengaluru to Malleswaram and that to Yeswanthpur as Rs x and Rs y
respectively and answer the following questions.
1. Represent the given situations algebraically.

2. What type of lines will the above system of linear equations represent?
Mention the condition used to justify your answer.

3. Find the fare from Bengaluru to Malleswaram.

OR
Find the fare from Bengaluru to Yeswanthpur.

CASE STUDY 3:
Puneet went for shopping in the evening by metro with his father who is an expert
in mathematics. He told Puneet that path of metro A is given by the equation 2x +
4y = 8 and path of metro B is given by the equation 3x + 6y = 18. His father put
some questions to Puneet. Help Puneet to solve the questions.

(i) Will the paths of metro A and metro B cross each other? Mention the
condition used to justify your answer.
(ii) Will the paths meet if the path of metro A is represented by the
equation 3x + 4y = 8? Why?
(iii) Find the coordinates of point of intersection of the two metro paths in
this situation.
OR
For what value of k in the following equations will the metro
paths coincide each other? kx + 3y – (k-3) = 0
12x + ky - k = 0

CASE STUDY 4:

It is common that Governments revise travel fares from time to time based on various factors such
as inflation ( a general increase in prices and fall in the purchasing value of money) on different
types of vehicles like auto, Rickshaws, taxis, Radio cab etc. The auto charges in a city comprise of a
fixed charge together with the charge for the distance covered.

Study the following situations:

Situation 1: In city A, for a journey of 10 km, the charge paid is Rs 75 and for a journey of 15 km,
the charge paid is Rs 110.

Situation 2: In a city B, for a journey of 8km, the charge paid is Rs91 and for a journey of 14km, the
charge paid is Rs 145.

1. If the fixed charges of auto rickshaw be Rs x and the running charges be Rs y km/hr, then
form a pair of linear equations representing the situation1.
2. If the fixed charges of auto rickshaw be Rs x and the running charges be Rs y km/hr, then
form a pair of linear equations representing the situation2.
3. A person travels a distance of 50km. find the amount he has to pay in situation 1

OR

What will a person have to pay for travelling a distance of 30km in situation 2?
CASE STUDY 5

A test consists of ‘True’ or ‘False’ questions. One mark is awarded for every correct answer while ¼
mark is deducted for every wrong answer. A student knew answers to some of the questions. Rest of
the questions he attempted by guessing. He answered 120 questions and got 90 marks.

1. If answer to all questions he attempted by guessing were wrong, then how many questions did he
answer correctly?

2. How many questions did he guess?

3. If answer to all questions he attempted by guessing were wrong and answered 80 correctly,
then how many marks he got?

OR

If answer to all questions he attempted by guessing were wrong, then how many questions
answered correctly to score 95 marks?

Answers:
Case study 1: (i) yes (ii) The 2 lines will be intersecting if a1/a2≠ b1/b2
(iii) after 6 seconds OR h = 19 m
Case study 2: (i)2x + 3y = 46 & 3x + 5y = 74
(ii) The 2 lines will be intersecting if a1/a2 ≠b1/b2
(iii) y = Rs. 10 OR x = Rs. 8

Case study 3: (i) The 2 paths will not meet since a1/a2=b1/b2 ≠ c1/c2

(ii) yes since a1/a2≠b1/b2

(iii) (-4,5) OR k=6
Case study 4:
(i) x + 10y = 75, x + 15y = 110
(ii) X + 8y = 91 , x + 14y= 145
(iii) Rs.355 OR Rs 289
Case study 5:

(i) He answered 96 questions correctly.

(ii) He attempted 24 questions by guessing.

(iii) 70 OR 100
