ACADEMIC ADVISOR (JOB ID 2387) Off of Acad Advisement (Student Services Professional II) $3519 - $5002 mo / Full-Time Major Duties Under the direct supervision of the Director of the Student Services Center and EOP Satellite, the advisor is responsible for providing academic advisement to students in the College of Business and Economics. The position supports, advocates, and facilitates the mission of California State University, Northridge and the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) by encouraging first generation, low income students to seek higher educational opportunities and achieve academic excellence. The advisor will serve as a member of a team of advisors who deliver a wide range of services to all new and continuing students in the College of Business and Economics, including specialized services provided to EOP students. Using developmental advising theory, advising techniques, and computer-assisted advising information, the advisor will engage each student based on the unique skills, abilities, interests, and needs of the student. Working together, the advisor and the student will identify activities, programs, and referrals that will assist the student in achieving success at CSU, Northridge and facilitate graduation. The advisor will initiate and maintain caseload records and will document student contacts. Further, the advisor will identify and facilitate resolution of student issues, determine service needs, apply and uphold University policy, complete appropriate University forms, and make necessary referrals to College and University resources. The advisor develops, organizes, facilitates and implements activities related to monitoring student transition and academic progress including, but not limited to advisor's follow-up with students and responses to faculty alerts. In cooperation with other members of the advising team, the advisor carries out assigned tasks relating to the coordination and implementation of programs in the Student Services Center/EOP. These assigned duties will include participation in EOP admission, transitional, and other EOP-related programs. Under direct supervision, the advisor will assist in planning and delivering advisement workshops, student events and activities, including recruitment of new students to the College of Business and Economics. These workshops and activities may require evening hours and occasional weekends. The advisor will attend staff meetings, in-service training, seminars, workshops, professional meetings and conferences. In addition, the advisor will participate in related University and community activities and committees.

The advisor will carry out other duties as assigned by the Director of the Student Services Center/EOP. Qualifications Graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Two years of full-time, professional experience in one of the Student Services Program areas or in a related field. Master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. Highly desirable: post-baccalaureate coursework in Educational Psychology and/or Educational Counseling. Candidate must have demonstrated experience in higher education working with multicultural/multi-ethnic populations; historically underrepresented, under prepared, low income and first generation college students; and familiarity with Educational Opportunity and/or Trio Programs. Candidate must have prior experience with software used in educational settings and application of academic policy. Knowledge, Specialized Skills, and Abilities: Demonstrated knowledge of college advising, evaluating and recruiting techniques. Working knowledge of the principles and techniques of research and interviewing; and the principles organizational, group, and individual behavior. Thorough knowledge of correct English grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Working knowledge of office computer systems at a level appropriate to the duties. Knowledge of general university policies and practices. Ability and specialized skills to: organize and set priorities; quickly learn and apply the goals and objectives of the program; establish and maintain excellent working relationships with the campus community and the target organizations, campuses, and sources. Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule Salary is commensurate with knowledge, skills, and experience. The university offers an excellent benefit package. Hiring Maximum for this position is $3519 per month. Hours: Full-Time; 40hrs/wk; two evenings and some weekends required; schedule to be determined.
