Project Management

Course Objectives:
The objective of the course is to
 Understand the fundamental principles of software project management planning,
and evaluation.
 Understand the planning activity of Project Management
 Learn managing People and Organizing Teams
 Understand the concept of monitoring and control, Cost estimation of project.

Course Outcomes:
At the end of the course, the student will be able to
 Design a project plan and evaluation.
 Implement the planning activities of project.
 Organize and manage the project team.
 Monitoring and control the project, also calculate the Project Cost estimation.

Overview: To understand about the fundamental principles of software project management like
planning, organizing, evaluation and cost estimation

Unit-I: Software Project Management Framework 7 Hrs

Introduction to Software Project Management: Why is Software Project Management


important? What is a Project, Software Projects versus other types of Projects, Contract
Management and Technical Project Management, Activities covered by Software Project
Management.
An Overview of Project Planning (Step-wise Approach): Introduction to Step-wise Project
Planning, Step 0: Select Project, Step 1: Identify Project Scope and Objectives, Step 2: Identify
Project Infrastructure, Step 3: Analyse Project Characteristics, Step 4: Identify Project Products
and activities, Step 5: Estimate Effort for each activity, Step 6: Identify activity risks, Step 7:
Allocate Resources, Step 8: Review/Publicize Plan, Step 9 and 10: Execute Plan/Lower-levels of
Planning.
Project Evaluation: Strategic assessment – Technical assessment – Cost benefit analysis –Cash
Flow Forecasting – Cost benefit evaluation techniques – Risk evaluation.

Unit-II: Activity Planning 7 Hrs

Introduction, The Objectives of Activity Planning, when to plan, Project Schedules, Projects and
activities, Sequencing and Scheduling activities, Network Planning Models, Formulating the
Network Model, Adding the time dimensions, The Forward Pass, The Backward Pass, Identifying
the Critical Path, Activity Float, Shortening the Project Duration, Identifying the critical activities,
Activity-on-Arrow Networks

Unit-III Managing People and Organizing Teams 7 Hrs

Introduction, understanding behaviour, Organizational behaviour: A background, Selecting the


right person for the job, Instruction in the best methods – Motivation – The Oldman – Hackman
job characteristics model, working in groups, Becoming a team, Decision making, Leadership,
organizational structures, Stress, Health and safety.

Unit-IV Monitoring and Control 7 Hrs

Introduction, Creating the framework, Collecting the data, Visualizing Progress, Cost Monitoring,
Earned Value, prioritizing monitoring, getting project back to target, Change control.
