B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson
Motivation (3 minutes)

The class will proceed to their assigned group. Each


member will be given a piece of paper. The students will
be given a minute to write a word in a piece of paper. It
can be an action word, noun or adjectives. The students
will put the paper in the box after the given time.

Presentation of Objectives (1 min.)

Let’s have our learning objectives to be attained today. I


want Group 1 to read the first learning objective, and to
be followed by Group 2 for the second one, and the third
for the Group 3 and group 4

Each group will assign a representative to pick a word


from the box. The representative will act the definition of
the word and can only say “yes” or “no”. The other group
members will guess the word with the given clue but
they must ring the bell before they will state the answer.
The group that can guess more words wins!

E. Abstraction (5 minutes)

Expanded definition is used to define technical


terms with a very detailed explanation,
sometimes, with the use of examples and visuals.
Expanded definitions are usually found in
academic texts.

Writing an Extended Definitions


 Dictionary definition – a dictionary will provide
you with a definition of the word. Some dictionary
tell the history or derivation of the word’s
meaning.
 Gather Information – List both the denotative and
connotative meanings of the word.
 Extended Definition – Explains what the word
means to the writer and may allow a reader to
see the word differently.

Definitions
Using the example term “arbitration”

1. Etymology – explaining the origin of word


itself
Arbitration, from the latin for “judgement”

2. History – if relevant, discussing the history of


the term/its use/ controversies associated with
it
Discuss how to use of arbitration as a third-
party mediation date from the 1630s and how
to practice came about

3. Cause and effect – discussion how the


situation came about and what effects it may
have
In the case of arbitration, cause and effect
may be the same as the history.
4. Description – listing and defining the
component parts
Arbitration is conducted by a trained arbiter
who sets down the rules that the parties must
abide by

5. Classification – showing how the topic fits


into a larger category
Arbitration is one of the alternatives to going into
a formal court to settle disputes.

6. Contrast/Negation – showing how the topic


differs from others in the same class
In an arbitration proceeding, no lawyers are
present.

7. Comparison – showing how the topic is


similar to others in the class
As with lawsuits or other court proceedings, the
decision in an arbitration proceeding is legally
binding in parties.

8. Analogy- explaining by comparing two


dissimilar topics, where the second is familiar
to the audience
An arbiter is like a referee- he or she listens to
both sides and makes a decision as to who is not
at fault, without the intervention of outside parties.

between the labor union and management

Group activity: Map the word
Directions: Study the given paragraph, identify the
word being defined. Give examples that were stated to
expand the definition of speed being “a concept the
marks our time”. Fill in the box to complete your task.

Speed is a concept that marks our time. Everybody is in


a hurry to go somewhere. Industry is constantly
demanding new inventions that will speed up production
so that the constant cry of the bosses to the workmen is
speed it up! The maker of automobiles boasts of the
newest type of a car which is faster than the old model.
Shoppers push and shove each other all about the
counters. All are in a hurry to get something. People
who are going to school, shop, or office rush
breathlessly to do important tasks, they gulp their food
and swallow it in haste. Restless “hunters of fun” crowd
into places of entertainment. Most of these people
cannot sit still. At a movie, they tap their feet or finger in
impatience. Yes, speed is the word of the day.
