CHAPTER 1 : INTRODUCTION TO INDUSTRIAL TRAINING

1.1 Introduction of Industrial Training

Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) was established with the objective to produce well
rounded graduates who are not only technically competent but also possess other traits such as
lifetime learning capacity, critical thinking, communication and behavioural skills, business
acumen, practical aptitude and solution synthesis ability. Hence, the students are required to
undergo practical work during their last semester on the fourth year of undergraduates. The
duration of entire program is 24 weeks where starts from 28 th February 2022 until 12th August
2022.

The purpose of the industrial training is to expose UniMAP students to the actual work
environment at construction site. Hence, they can relate theoretical knowledge with application in
the industry. During the training, students are able to develop skills in safety practices, handling
equipment, work ethics, communication and management. In this report, the accompanying
theme are secured which are diagram of the organization, wellbeing practices and hardworking
attitudes, aptitudes and information that have been learnt all through the modern preparing.

Toward the finish of practical period, understudies ought to have the option to:
 Demonstrate abilities in correspondence, the board and collaboration.
 Adopt ethic, professionalism and HSE practices in work culture.
 Demonstrate continuous building of skills and knowledge throughout the training.
 Appreciation of sustainability issues in industry.
1.2 Objectives of Industrial Training

The goal of performing industrial training was approached by means of the objectives as follow:

 To apply the knowledge and skills in terms of theoretical and practical related to the
workplace.
 To expose students with the real work environment
 To build the confident level among students in communications and interpersonal skills.
 To develop students in effective communication with workers from any range and
background.
 To build professionalism and etiquette in following the policies, procedures, and methods
in an organization
 To acquaint students with actual experiences on the scope of work related to the field
taken in accordance with the level of studies.

1.3 Placement and Activities during Industrial Training

The industrial training serves as the final semester for Bachelor Civil Engineering
Technology (Honour) (Construction) students to fulfil the bachelor’s degree. The industrial
training for academic session 2021/2022 semester 2 was started from 28 th February 2022 until 12th
August 2022 which runs for 24 weeks. I have sought and found a place to undergo industrial
training in the contractor company located at 235A, Tingkat Atas Rumah Kedai Taman Akasia,
Jalan Padang Sanai, 06300 Kuala Nerang, Kedah Darulaman.

TOP BUILT (M) SDN. BHD. is a Bumiputra company which is contractor that
specializes in building construction especially for ‘Design and Built’, renovation and services. In
the beginning of the industrial training period, I have been exposed to overall working conditions
at the construction site with guidance by the director directly where he is my supervisor during
my internship. My placement on the first and second month of internship was in the team
marketing where I created video, brochures and catalogues for company’s social media accounts
such as Facebook, Telegram and Tik-tok. The second placement was in the designer team where I
needed to design a concept of Bungalow based on client criteria’s and draw an architectural
working drawing set and the task was supervised by director.
Last but not least, industrial training gives many advantaged and benefits to students.
During the training period, students are exposed to a variety of activities in the field of duties,
students were briefed and clear guidance in teams of general knowledge, as well as exposure to
the real working environment and learnt social skills such as communication and teamwork.

1.4 Outcome

The industrial training gives a good impact for students who require work experience and
knowledge in civil engineering field. Besides, industrial training helped me to improve my ability
to communicate efficiently while also raising my awareness of the social, cultural, global and
environmental responsibilities as an engineer. Furthermore, this industrial training developed me
to become more confidence in making decisions, multi-tasking, and leadership. From the
industrial training, I also have acquired the ability to identify and find the engineering solution for
the problems approach. The experience of the training at main contractor’s company for 26 weeks
gave me to develop capability and enthusiasm for self-improvement through continuous
professional development and the life-long learning.

CHAPTER 4 : CONCLUSION

For the entire course of 24 weeks of training at TOP BUILT (M) Sdn. Bhd., it has been a
tremendous life changing experience. This training has given me a great exposure to the real-life
working environment. The objective of the industrial training definitely has achieved by having a
good learning approach that is theoretical and practical knowledge. Moreover, the staff here are
friendly and passed down the knowledge about the construction work without any hesitation.

Throughout the industrial training period in TOP BUILT (M) Sdn. Bhd., a lot of
experiences and knowledge had been gauged. The industrial training no doubt will assist me in
preparing and exposing for the actual working life. The industrial training exposes a student to
the world of work so that they can relate theoretical knowledge with real application in industry.
There are few suggestions that I would like to propose in order to make this industrial training
become more motivating and practical. I would like to suggest to the UniMAP to give more
hands-on skills during the lab sessions so the student will have high level of confidence to
perform any task before they go for industrial training. Based on my experience during this
24weeks, I am agreed that the industrial training program has met all of its entire primary
objectives. It was also the most effective way of preparing students for the real working life. As a
result of the program, now I am more confident in my ability to enter the working life and build
my future career.
