Written in prose and verse around 1606,
Macbeth delves into the legitimacy of power,
human ambition and the designs of fate, in one
of the most lucid tragedies that the English
playwright has bequeathed to the history of
literature.

MACBETH'S CASTLE AND ELSEWHERE IN THE COUNTRY.

the quest for power leads Macbeth and his
wife to commit heinous acts, setting off a
chain of tragic events.
Macbeth and Banquo meet the witches on the moor after a battle.

The witches prophesy that Macbeth will be Thane of Cawdor and then king, and
that Banquo's descendants will also be kings.

Macbeth is named Thane of Cawdor by King Duncan, fulfilling the first part of the
prophecy.

Lady Macbeth persuades Macbeth to murder Duncan and seize the throne.
Macbeth murders Duncan while he sleeps in his castle.

Macbeth is crowned king of Scotland, but begins to be consumed by guilt and


paranoia.
evokes a variety of emotions, including suspense, intrigue, horror.
