Part 1. The pronunciation of the ending “s/ es” and the ending “ed”:
1. Đuôi “s/ es” là hình thức của danh từ số nhiều và động từ chia ở ngôi thứ 3 số ít. Nó được
phát âm như sau:

2. Đuôi “ed” là hình thức của động từ có qui tắc ở quá khứ và quá khứ phân từ. Nó được phát
âm như sau:
Từ tận cùng là Phát âm là Thêm –ED đọc là Ví dụ

-d, -de /d/ / id / decided, needed

-t, -te /t/ wanted, dedicated
-k, -ke /k/ /t/ looked, baked
-gh, -ph /f/ photographed, laughed
-x, -s, -ce, -ss /s/ mixed, missed, pronounced dropped,
-p, -pe /p/ developed, roped established, finished
-sh /∫/ scratched, stretched
-ch /ʧ/
Trường hợp còn lại /d/ used (v), prepared, cleaned

Part 2: Stress: Trọng âm của từ.

Định nghĩa: Từ mà có một âm được đọc to hơn, cao hơn, rõ hơn thì ta gọi đó là trọng âm của
từ.
Eg: teacher, polite……
I. Stress in two syllable words: Trọng âm của từ hai âm tiết.
1. Đa số danh từ, tính từ 2 âm tiết trọng âm nhấn vào âm tiết thứ 1.

* Ngoại lệ: Một số danh từ, tính từ trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết số 2.

2. Đa số động từ 2 âm tiết trọng âm nhấn vào âm tiết thứ 2.

* Ngoại lệ: Một số động từ có vần cuối: er(n), en, el, le, ow, y, ish thì trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết số 1.

3. Một số từ 2 âm tiết bắt đầu bằng “a” trọng âm nhấn vào âm tiết thứ 2.

4. Giới từ hai âm tiết thì trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết số 2.

Eg: before, toward, between, behind,….
Trừ: under, after
 II. Stress in three or more than three syllable words: Trọng âm của từ 3 hoặc hơn 3 âm tiết.
1. Hầu hết từ có 3, 4 …âm tiết trọng âm ở âm tiết đầu:
Eg: factory, temperature, literature, photograph, confident …
Ngoại lệ:
- Một số từ trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2:
Eg: pagoda, September, October, November,
December, computer, curriculum,….
- Một số động từ 3 âm tiết trọng âm ở âm tiết thứ 2:
Eg: remember, deliver, consider, accomplish, examine,……
- Một số động từ 3 âm tiết trọng âm ở âm tiết cuối:
Eg: entertain, recommend, introduce, interrupt, ……………
2. Những từ kết thúc bằng “ary”, “ate”, “gy/ phy/ fy”, “al” , “ize/ ise”, “itive”, “try”,
“ical” có trọng âm ở vần thứ 3 từ cuối lên.
Eg: separate, educate, situate, consolidate, graduate,……….
Secondary, necessary, ordinary, ….Geography, biology,
photography, meteolody,…
3. Trọng âm trước những vần cuối sau:
* -tion/sion: occasion, education, information,……
Ngoại lệ: television trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết đầu.
*- ia/ian: musician, mathematician, Australia,……..
*- ic(s): economic, electric, academic, ……………
Ngoại lệ: politics trọng âm ở âm tiết đầu.
*-ive: expensive, suggestive,……
*-ular: particular, regular,……
*-ience/-ient: efficient, convenience………
*-ity/-ety: ability, society
*-eous/-ious: advantageous, religious
*-ial/-ual: financial, individual,…..
4. Trọng âm ở vần cuối sau:
* - oo(n): balloon, bamboo,……
* - ee(r): volunteer, employee, trainee, ……
Ngoại lệ: ‘coffee; centigrade; committee trọng âm ở âm tiết thứ hai.
* - een: thirteen, seventeen,…….
* - ese: Vietnamese, Japanese, ………..
* - ette: cigarette, launderette, ………
*- ain: entertain,…….
* - ique: technique (n): kỹ thuật, critique(n): bài phê bình, nghệ thuật phê bình
* - esque: picturesque (đẹp như trong tranh), grotesque (lố bịch, kệch cỡm)
* -aire/ -ade: questionnaire; lemonade
5. Những tiền tố và hậu tố sau không làm thay đổi trọng âm của từ (trọng âm vẫn ở từ
gốc)
a. Tiền tố: ir/il/im/in/un/dis/mis/co/under/sub/over/ anti-/multi-/extra-,……
b. Hậu tố:
* ment: enjoy – enjoyment * able: fashion – fashionable
* ness: happy – happiness * ing/ed: demand – demanding
* less: care – careless * ish: red – redish
* ship: friend – friendship * al: music – musical
* hood: child – childhood * ise: person – personalise
* ly: friend – friendly
* ous: danger – dangerous * ful: care – careful
