CLL231 – Tutorial 1

1. Use MATLAB to perform the following:

a. Print “Hello, MATLAB”
b. Declare two variables, take input values and perform addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division on them. Finally print the results.

2. A layer of water flows down an inclined fixed surface with the velocity profile shown in the
figure. Determine the magnitude and direction of the shearing stress that the water exerts on
the fixed surface for U = 2m/s and h = 0.1 m.

3. Derive the relationship between pressure and elevation in the atmosphere for those regions
in which the temperature varies linearly with elevation. Assume compressible fluid (air) in the
atmosphere.

4. A piston having a cross-sectional area of 0.07 m2 is located in a cylinder con- taining water as
shown in the figure below. An open U-tube manometer is connected to the cylinder as shown.
For h1 = 60mm and h2 = 100mm, what is the value of the applied force, P, acting on the piston?
The weight of the piston is negligible.
5. A cuboid is filled with liquid of density ρ2 upto height h & with liquid of density ρ1, also upto
height h as shown in the figure

Find the following

a. Force on face ABCD due to liquid of density ρ1

b. Force on face CDEF transferred due to liquid of density ρ1
c. Force on face CDEF due to liquid of density ρ2 only
d. Net force on face ABEF

6. Determine the change in the elevation of the mercury in the left leg of the manometer of the figure
below because of an increase in pressure of 5 psi in pipe A while the pressure in pipe B remains
constant.
