PHOTOS OF COLLECTION
The average age of the collection is very
CURRENCY good at the moment.
The materials that the library does have
are very new, which showcases the
dedication to keeping this section up to
date.
Average age of materials
in the foreign language While these materials are current enough
section: to support the curriculum, the quantity
of books spread across the range of
2015 - 8 years languages spoken in the school is not
adequate.
The selection of foreign language books
needs to be updated according to the
ever-changing school population.
COLLECTION CONDITION
Almost all of the books in this section are in excellent condition as most of
them were purchased recently and, on average, were published within the
last eight years. There are no markings, torn pages, or damaged covers. Only
one book showcased minimal cover damage, as it appears to have been
bent at one time.

Books are labeled with their category (FL for Foreign Language), Dewey call
number, first three letters of the author's name, and an occasional additional
spine sticker that indicates what language the book is in or the type of story
(animal, cultural, fairy tale, etc.).

Aspects of these books that attract students to this collection are covers
with colorful and detailed animals and characters that resemble themselves.
There are also many versions of popular children’s stories written in the
other represented languages which draw the student to this section.
CIRCULATION
There are currently 200 foreign language titles in the
library, which makes up 1.09% of the total collection.
This year, of the 2,499 total checkouts in the library,
only 29 have been foreign language titles (1.16%).
In total (all years), these foreign language titles have
been checked out 519 times of the 69,716 total
circulations (0.74%)
Finding: while this collection makes up a small
percentage of the library, it is being used a
proportionate amount to its size.
The percentages of circulation by category can be seen
on the next side.

CIRCULATION CHART
CURRICULUM ALIGNMENT
There are two primary functions of this section of the library.

1. The students that speak these languages can have materials to check out for independent
reading. This also allows the students to have books that their families can read to them at
home in their native languages.
2. The ESOL teachers can check out these materials to use in their lessons. Most of our FL
books are bilingual, therefore making them a useful tool when helping these students learn
the English language.

“ ...research has shown that a student's English language proficiency and academic
skills is supported by having students work on the reading fluency and
comprehension skills in their native language.” - ESOL Teacher at JCE

Within the collection of Spanish titles, there are a variety of curriculum connections that can
be drawn to SC State Standards across subject domains and grade levels. This allows
teachers to use these materials to support academic growth in other areas in addition to
cromprehension development. Specific standard information is included on the next slide.

COST
Jackson Creek Elementary school has 56 students that speak a language other than
English and in order to help with the language development, we have found that the
Foreign Language section of the library is lacking in both size and content.

We recommend an additional 16 books and 4 graphic novels to the Foreign Language

section of the school library. With an average costs of $18.00 per fiction children’s
book and $16.49 per graphic novel (SLJ, 2022), the cost will run $353.96.

The titles recommended for purchase are based on current titles within the library that
are checked out frequently, as well as the request from the ESOL teacher, who asked
for more classic children’s books in both Spanish and French. Graphic novels were also
recommended due to the popularity of the genre within the library.

CONCLUSION
Based on the student population within Jackson Creek Elementary School
that speak English as a second language, we felt that the Foreign Language
section of the school library needed additional text. After discussing the
collection with both the Media Specialist and ESOL teachers, we determined
that adding in more children’s books and graphic novels written in both
Spanish and French was the best use of funds and would improve the
collection. By adding our recommendations to this section, students will not
only have more titles in their native language, but also be able to improve on
their reading comprehension.
