PROJECT DETAILS

Brief Description of proposed project:

Engaging in the activity of planting serves as a beneficial pastime that fosters a deeper connection with the
natural world. Furthermore, it offers advantageous outcomes for mental well-being and physical fitness,
while also yielding financial gains. However, given the demands of our contemporary lifestyles, it might be
challenging to cultivate a modest balcony garden or foster a meaningful connection with the natural world
[1]. Insufficient time and energy may hinder the regular watering of lawns and flower plants, which may
include succulents, money plants, and a variety of indoor and outdoor plant species. This endeavor aims to
enhance the accessibility, pleasure, and cognitive benefits associated with engaging in leisure-time hobbies.
This study proposes a smart irrigation and gardening system that utilizes Internet of Things (IoT) and
artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. The system aims to optimize plant watering methods, provide
regular updates and alerts, and monitor climatic conditions [2].

Our IoT-based smart irrigation system incorporates many hardware components, such as a water motor, a
relay module, and multiple sensors. These components are utilized to control the activation and deactivation
of the water motor, facilitating the watering process for plant nourishment. Both the Android app and the
open-source Internet of Things (IoT) framework are responsible for the management and regulation of many
processes [3]. Primarily, I have devised a comprehensive suite of plant care services using our Android
application. This resource will prove to be quite beneficial for anybody with a penchant for ornamental
horticulture.

Objectives:
• In order to make the lives of gardeners easier, it is possible to operate the irrigation system remotely
and monitor the weather conditions from any point in the world.

• The goal of this research is to develop an irrigation system that makes use of both automated and
manual techniques in order to achieve the greatest possible reduction in the amount of time spent
on each task.

• The purpose of this project is to develop irrigation technologies that are not only effective but also
save time.

• It is essential to guarantee that frequent updates are made in order to successfully manage the whole
of the garden, and this responsibility falls on your shoulders.

• It is vital to update the system on a constant basis in order to ensure that each and every output that
is produced by the machine is accurate to the highest possible degree.

• It is essential to build a deeper relationship with a number of different technical domains in order to
expand the capabilities.
• In order to improve the efficiency of irrigation and smart gardening systems and to get better results
from them

• It is vital to make the flow of current more consistent and to use as little water as possible as a loss
in order to obtain better results from them.

Problem Statement:
• People who are participating in touring activities sometimes get into situations in which they do not
have access to a sufficient number of feasible choices for watering plants, and the available
alternatives are either prohibitively costly or fraught with potential danger [4].
• According to the findings of study, a substantial number of intelligent devices, such as agents,
gadgets, and systems, have user interfaces that are complex, expensive, and difficult for individuals
who do not have specialist expertise to comprehend [5].

• An automatic watering system has been the subject of a great deal of scrutiny as part of a variety of
research projects that have been carried out. The operation of this system involves determining when
the soil is dry and then beginning the process of watering the plants. However, it is important to
keep in mind that different types of plants have varying requirements for the amount of water they
need, and that overwatering may be damaging to the health of plants. It has been shown that the
death of plants may be attributed, in part, to an excessive amount of watering [6].
• Because it is so prohibitively expensive, a sizeable percentage of the population is unable to
maintain their financial commitment to the whole system. The proposed system consists of a mobile
robot that is outfitted with a camera for the purpose of surveillance, another camera for the purpose
of plant identification, scanning equipment for the purpose of detecting diseases and pests, an
automated watering system, a sensor for the detection of soil mineral and organic matter, and a
functionality for the care of plants that are located outside. Additionally, it is important to note that
the installation of such a system needs a substantial amount of space in order to function properly

Main expected outcomes of the project:

The present project introduces the notion of SmartGardening. The SmartGardening system leverages the
Internet of Things (IoT), wireless sensor networks (WSN), and cloud computing to facilitate the
development of an irrigation schedule for those engaged in gardening activities. This is achieved by using a
customizable planting profile that can be modified to accommodate the specific requirements of diverse
garden types. Efforts are underway to build SmartGardening systems that optimize water use for botanical
plants, using user-provided input as a foundation for development. The root zone of the plants is fitted with
sensors for monitoring soil moisture and temperature. These sensors are linked to a comprehensive wireless
network via the system. Furthermore, the gateway unit has the responsibility of overseeing the aggregation
and management of data obtained from sensors, as well as the initiation of actions by actuators, while also
facilitating the transmission of this data to a mobile application. The gateway of the microcontroller was
coded with an algorithm that used threshold values for temperature and soil moisture. The aforementioned
algorithm was used to control the quantity of water utilized. The establishment of a well-designed irrigation
schedule is of utmost importance for the optimal development of plants. Various factors, including as
temperature, humidity, wind speed, and seed monitoring, play a significant role in determining the water
requirements of plants under diverse climatic conditions.
