Many people think that the actor, playwright and poet William Shakespeare was
the greatest English writer of all time. We know very little about his childhood
except that he was born in Stratfordupon-Avon in 1564. At the age of 18 he
married a woman called Anne Hathaway and they had three children together

After the birth of his children, Shakespeare went to work in London as an actor.
He started to write different kinds of plays and these became very popular. He
wrote 17 comedies, 10 tragedies, and 10 histories. He also wrote over 150 poems,
called ‘sonnets’. Theatre companies all over the world continue to perform his
plays to this day.
3…
Shakespeare’s theatre group worked in a theatre called The Globe, which was
the shape of an octagon and didn’t have a roof. At The Globe, the audience could
pay more for a seat with a cushion or pay just a penny to stand in the middle and
watch the play. All of the actors were men, because women didn’t act in
Shakespeare’s time.
5…
Shakespeare died a long time ago but his spirit lives on. A lot of people don’t
know that many popular films today are based on stories written by Shakespeare
hundreds of years ago. For example, the story of The Lion King is very similar
to Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, Hamlet.
