LEARNING OUTCOME:
PLO 5 : Apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT
tools to well-define engineering problems, with an awareness of the limitations
(DK6)
CLO 2 : Construct the various application of semiconductor devices circuit by using
schematic diagram (P4, PLO 5)

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE (SO):

Upon completion of this laboratory, students should be able to:
i. Determine I-V Characteristics curve for Zener Diode.
ii. Determine the characteristic of Zener Diode as a voltage regulator

THEORY :
Zener Diode is a P-N junction device, has symbol, designed to take a full advantage of
the Zener breakdown region. Once the reverse-bias potential reached the Zener region,
the ideal Zener diode is assumed to have a fixed terminal voltage and zero internal
resistance.

The Zener region as shown in Fig. 1 .The characteristic drops in an almost vertical
manner at a reverse bias potential denoted V Z. The fact that the curve drops down and
away from the horizontal axis rather than up and away for the positive V D region reveals
that the current in the Zener region has a direction opposite to that of a forward biased
diodes.

Fig 1: Zener Diode Region.

This region of unique characteristics is employed in the design of Zener diodes, which
have the graphic symbol appearing in Fig. 2. Both the semiconductor diode and zener
diode are presented side by side in Fig. 2 to ensure that the direction of conduction of
each is clearly understood together with the required polarities of the applied voltage.
For the semiconductor diode the “on” state will support a current in the direction of the
arrow in the symbol. For the Zener diode the direction of conduction is opposite to that of
the arrow in the symbol as pointed out in the introduction to this section. Note also that
the polarity of VD and VZ are the same as would be obtained if each were a resistive
element.

APPARATUS :
i. Power Supply Unit (5-25V)
ii. Zener diodes (5.6V and 9.6V)
iii. Resistor (220Ω)
iv. Digital / Analog Multimeter

SAFETY PRECAUTION :
1. Maintain a clean work area at all times.
2. Handle electrical components and fittings with caution.
3. Always use a grounded electrical source of the proper rating.
4. Always dry hands completely before touching electrical equipment.

PROCEDURE :

1. Forward-biased Characteristics

1.1. Connect the circuit as shown in Figure 1.

1.2. Increase the voltage according to table 1 and record the result.
1.3. Draw the output characteristics of the Zener diode.

Figure 1: Zener Characteristics

2. Reversed-biased Characteristics

2.1. Connect the circuit as shown in figure 4.2.

2.2. Increase the volt according to table 4.2 and record the result.
2.3. Draw the output characteristics of the Zener diode.

3. Zener diode as a voltage regulator

2.1. Connect the circuit as shown in figure 3.

2.2. Close S1 (ON) and measure output voltage and record the result in table 3.
2.3. Open S1 (OFF), close S2 (ON) and measure output voltage and record the result
in table 3.
