Introduction
Formative assessment in the context of reading and listening plays a pivotal role in shaping students'
language proficiency and comprehension skills. Unlike traditional summative assessments that
occur at the end of a learning period, formative assessments are ongoing, providing real-time
feedback to both educators and learners. In the realm of reading, formative assessments may
involve regular quizzes, discussions, or journal entries that gauge students' understanding of texts,
their ability to infer meaning, and their grasp of literary elements. Additionally, educators can employ
techniques such as think-aloud sessions and peer discussions to delve into the cognitive processes
underlying reading comprehension. Similarly, in the domain of listening, formative assessments can
include activities like listening journals, comprehension checks, and interactive discussions that
assess not only the students' ability to comprehend spoken language but also their capacity to
discern nuances such as tone, mood, and context. These assessments allow teachers to identify
areas of improvement, tailor instruction to individual needs, and cultivate a dynamic learning
environment where students actively engage with and reflect on the material. Ultimately, formative
assessment for reading and listening serves as a dynamic tool for fostering continuous growth and
refining language skills throughout the learning journey.
Creating a tool for formative assessment to evaluate literacy skills, applying it in your
classes, and writing a report with the results is a comprehensive process. Here are
step-by-step instructions to help you carry out this task effectively:
Step 1: Define the Purpose and Objectives
Purpose:

The purpose of this formative assessment is to evaluate students' understanding of sea animals
through the integration of the present continuous tense. This assessment aims to assess students'
ability to apply grammar rules, recognize and use new vocabulary, and comprehend spoken or
written information related to sea animals.

Grammar Objective:

Students will demonstrate the correct use of the present continuous tense in sentences related to
sea animals.

Vocabulary Objective:

Students will identify and use a set of sea animal vocabulary words accurately.

Reading Comprehension Objective:

Students will comprehend a reading about sea animals and extract key information.

Listening Comprehension Objective:

Students will demonstrate the ability to extract key information, and understand the main ideas given
in spoken passages about sea animals.
Step 2: Design the Assessment Tool
Reading Passage:

Provide a reading passage with sentences related to sea animals, ensuring it includes instances of
the present continuous tense and the targeted vocabulary. Also, include a big picture that
corresponds to the content of the sentences.

Vocabulary Exercises:

Matching exercises where students connect sea animal names with their pictures.

Grammar/Writing Tasks:

Provide sentences with missing verbs, and students need to fill in the blanks with the correct present
continuous form.

Listening Comprehension:

Conduct a listening exercise where students listen to descriptions of sea animals and respond with
the correct vocabulary words.

Oral Communication Activities:

Individual discussion about sea animals, where students use the present continuous tense in their
speech.

Recommendations
For students with scores of 7-8: Offer additional practice opportunities focusing on the present
continuous tense and the targeted vocabulary. Provide extra exercises and examples to reinforce
understanding.
For students with scores of 9-10: Encourage these students to explore more complex sentence
structures using the present continuous tense. Challenge them with higher-level vocabulary related
to sea animals and engage them in advanced reading materials to further develop their
comprehension skills.
Incorporate interactive activities: Introduce interactive games or group discussions centered around
sea animals and the present continuous tense to engage all students and reinforce learning in a fun
and collaborative manner.

Conclusion
The assessment results indicate varying levels of proficiency among the students in understanding
sea animals and applying the present continuous tense. Formative assessments play a vital role in
improving students' literacy skills, enabling educators to tailor their teaching strategies according to
individual needs. Continuous formative assessment not only evaluates students' progress but also
guides instruction, allowing educators to provide targeted support for improvement. It serves as a
vital tool in fostering language development, enhancing grammar and vocabulary knowledge, and
improving reading and listening comprehension. Implementing ongoing formative assessments
remains crucial for a holistic approach to literacy skill development, ensuring students receive
personalized attention and support to thrive in language learning.
