CREATIVE NONFICTION

Your lesson for today

For today’s lesson, the literary element you will use is the CONFLICT as a springboard to write a

REFLECTIVE ESSAY.
What is a Reflective Essay? It is a kind of essay in which the writer examines his/her
experiences in life. The writer then writes about these experiences, exploring how his/her life has
changed, developed or grown from these experiences.
A Reflective Essay has three parts, the Introduction where the writer shares what the focus
of his essay will be. The Body where the writer explains the events that caused the change and the
Conclusion where the writer sums up how he/she has changed or the effects of these changes.
What is CONFLICT? It is a literary element about two opposing forces. Conflict provides
crucial tension in any story and is used to drive the narrative forward. It is often used to reveal a
deeper meaning in a narrative while highlighting character’s motivations, values, and weaknesses.
There are two categories of Conflict:
Internal conflict is when a character struggles with their own opposing desires or beliefs. It happens
within them, and it drives their development as a character.
External conflict sets a character against something or someone beyond their control. External
forces stand in the way of a character’s motivations and create tension as the character tries to reach
their goals.
Including both internal and external conflict in your reflective essay is recommended, because after
all, Life always includes both.

Kinds of Conflict
1.Character vs. Self- This is an internal conflict where the opposition is within the character. This
may entail to decide right from wrong, or it may also be about mental health struggles.

2.Character vs. Character-This is an external conflict of one character against another character.
Protagonist vs. Antagonist

3. Character vs. Nature-The character is pitted against nature (desert, sea, wild animals)

4.Character vs. Society- The character’s conflict with institutions, traditions, etc.

5. Character vs. Technology- The character is in conflict with new technology that he/she is not
familiar with

6.Character vs. Supernatural- The character goes against supernatural beings like ghosts, gods,
monsters.
Let’s try this!
