1) General Features on a Nautical Charts (Symbol and Abbreviations)

The nautical chart is essential for safe navigation. Mariners use charts to plan voyages and
navigate ships safely and economically. It is one of the most fundamental tools available to the
mariner. With regards to symbol and abbreviations a thorough knowledge of Chart symbol is
highly insisted, because without understanding the correct symbols and its meaning, the
reliability of the chart work will be diminished and the chances of errors will be higher. Many
different types of symbols and abbreviations are used on nautical charts. This system provides
mariners with a quick way to determine the physical characteristics of the charted area and
information on Aids to Navigation. There are numerous categories of chart symbols and
abbreviations. Not every symbol will appear on every chart and it’s likely some symbols you’ll be
totally unfamiliar with, because nautical chart symbols can seem overwhelming at first. When
you first see a nautical chart, it’s almost like information overload. Remember that nautical chart
symbols are there to keep you safe and more. They provide valuable information and when it
comes to being informed, more information is always better.

2) Tides (Self-reflection/Understanding)
Tides are one of the most reliable phenomena in the world. These are very long-period waves
that move through the ocean in response to the forces exerted by the moon and sun. It is high
tide when water covers much of the shore by rising to its highest level. It is low tide when water
falls to its lowest level and recedes from the shore. We study tides for safe navigation,
recreation, and coastal development. Every natural occurring incident has some relevance and
has impact on the living creatures. Some importance of tide includes affecting other aspects of
oceanic life, including the reproductive activities of fish and ocean plants. It is also important in
navigation because high tides raise the water level close to the shores which helps the ships to
arrive at the harbor more easily. Tides also play an important role in various aspects of human
life as well as in the entire ecosystem of plants and animals.
