Hours of Work (p/w): Full Time

Service Centre/Directorate: General Surgery

Base: St George’s Hospital but the post holder may be required to work at any of the Trust’s
sites.

Role of the Department: To provide surgical care to a high standard and to act as model
employers for individuals to develop and grow in their roles.

Job Summary: The General Surgery team at St George’s Hospital wishes to appoint an
ST1/ST2 level trust doctor to join the surgical team. The post would
provide an ideal professional development platform from which the
appointee may develop a portfolio of experience, although the post is not
part of a formal training programme. The main responsibilities of the post
are to care for the patients admitted to the wards for elective or emergency
surgery
Clinical Governance and Audit
The post holder will be required to participate in the clinical audit and clinical governance
process within the framework of the General Surgery SDU. A weekly Surgical Educational
meeting and Hospital Grand Round are held together with monthly Clinical Governance
meetings for all staff in the General Surgery SDU which includes analysis of morbidity
and mortality data.

Educational Duties
The postholder will be required to participate actively in the education programme of the
SDU, attending clinical meetings within the specific firm and the SDU. And will be
expected to work with and support the Physician assistants and clinical nurse specialists
within the team

Cross Cover and Leave Arrangements


The postholder will be expected to agree mutually agreeable cross cover arrangements with
his/her colleagues within the firm and for these arrangements to be documented in writing.
Notification of annual or other arranged leave, and cover arrangements, must be at least six
weeks prior to the proposed leave, and must be made in writing to the Specialty Manager
for General Surgery, approved by a consultant within the firm.

Main Duties/Key Results Areas:

The appointee will have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients under the
care of the colorectal or UGI surgical team, including all administrative duties associated
with patient care. The appointee will be expected to competent at the ‘senior house officer
level’ in all aspects of general and emergency surgery.
