FUTURE TENSE

In English, we may express future actions in many ways:

1. PRESENT SIMPLE
 It is used to express future actions established by time tables,
programmes, calendars…
Example: “The film starts at 9 o’ clock”

2. PRESENT CONTINUOUS (TO BE+ GERUND)


 It is used to express future actions consisting of very near
planned arrangements.
 A time expression is required when using present continuous.
Example: “On Saturday I am travelling to Cerler”

3. FUTURE SIMPLE (WILL+ INFINITIVE)


It is used for:
 Sudden decisions: “The bell is ringing, I will open the door”
 Predictions: “It will rain in the North of Spain tomorrow”
 Offers: “I will help you cooking tonight”
 Promises: “I promise I will be very punctual”

Expressions that take the future simple:


Probably, surely, certainly, perhaps, I think/expect/suppose/promise

4. GOING TO (TO BE + GOING TO+ GERUND)


It is used for:
 Evident predictions: “Look at these clouds, It is going to rain”
 Intentions/plans: “I am going to study hard for my final exams”

5. FUTURE PERFECT (WILL + HAVE+ PARTICIPLE)


 It is used for an action we will do and finish at a certain time in
the future.
Example: “By this time next year, I will have finished ESO”

6. FUTURE CONTINUOUS (WILL + BE + GERUND)


 It is used for an action we will do in the future and will last some
time, that is, it will be a future progressive action.
Example: “I will be skiing in the mountains in 5 days time”
