Lesson 4.1 – 4.2

Learning Task/ Activities
1. Explain what makes an energy source non-renewable.

Non-renewable energy sources are those that cannot be easily replenished or regenerated
within a human lifespan or even several generations. These energy sources are finite and will
eventually run out. Several factors contribute to making an energy source non-renewable.

One of the main reasons why an energy source is non-renewable is its limited availability.
Fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, are formed over millions of years from the
remains of ancient plants and animals.gas, are formed over millions of years from the remains
of ancient plants and animals. The process of their formation is a slow one, and their
extraction rate far exceeds the rate at which they are naturally replenished. As a result, these
fossil fuels are considered non-renewable because once they are depleted, there will be no
more readily accessible reserves.

Another factor that makes an energy source non-renewable is the environmental impact
associated with its extraction and use. For instance, extracting and burning fossil fuels release
harmful pollutants into the atmosphere, contributing to air pollution and climate change. The
extraction of non-renewable energy sources often involves invasive and destructive methods,
such as mountaintop removal mining or or drilling in sensitive ecosystems.deep-sea drilling,
which can have detrimental effects on ecosystems and local communities.

Furthermore, the economic implications of non-renewable energy sources make them

unsustainable in the long run. As these energy sources become scarcer, their prices tend to
rise, leading to increased costs for consumers and businesses. This dependence on finite
resources also makes economies vulnerable to fluctuations in global energy markets, which
can have significant impacts on inflation and economic instability.

Assessment
1. Explain the environmental impacts associated with exploration and use of the
different types of fossil fuels.

The exploration and use of fossil fuels have had significant environmental impacts. Fossil
fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, have been the primary sources of energy for many
decades. While these fuels have provided numerous benefits, they also come with detrimental
consequences for the environment. This essay will explore the environmental impacts
associated with the exploration and use of different types of fossil fuels.

Firstly, the Firstly, the extraction of coal has a substantial impact on the
environment.exploration and use of coal have severe environmental impacts. Coal mining
leads to deforestation, habitat destruction, and the release of harmful pollutants into the air
and water. The extraction of coal requires the removal of vegetation and topsoil, resulting in
the loss of biodiversity. Additionally, the burning of coal for energy generation releases large
amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere,
contributing to climate change. Coal combustion also emits sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen
oxides (NOx), and particulate matter, which contribute to air pollution and respiratory health
issues.

Secondly, the exploration and use of oil have significant environmental consequences.
Offshore oil drilling operations can result in offshore oil drilling operations can result in oil
spills, which have devastating impacts on marine ecosystems and wildlife.oil spills, which
have devastating effects on marine ecosystems. These spills can contaminate water bodies,
kill marine life, and disrupt the delicate balance of ecosystems. Oil extraction also requires
the clearing of land and destruction of habitats, leading to the loss of biodiversity.
Furthermore, the combustion of oil for energy releases greenhouse gases and air pollutants,
contributing to climate change and air pollution.

Lastly, the exploration and Lastly, the exploration and extraction of oil often involve social
and human rights issues.
