I. Word Bank (5pts.)

Know the meaning of the following terms.

1. Humanities - the term "humanities" originated from the Renaissance Latin

expression studia humanitatis or study of humanitas which refers to “culture, refinement,
education". Humanities are fields of study that focus on people and their cultures, as
well as analytical and critical research techniques that arise from a respect for human
values and the singular capacity of the human spirit to express itself.
2. Art – it is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination,
typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be
appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power, although there are many
different meanings of arts given by different people, I like the definition of art that was
stated by Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy that goes “Art is not a handicraft, it is the transmission
of feeling, the artist has experienced.“ I would say it means that art is not purely
technical skill to express a variety of emotions. Art became a mode of communication
that allow artist to share their feelings and perspectives to connect to their audience.
3. Art Appreciation – it is the ability to interpret and understand man-made arts and
enjoy them through actual work experience with art tools and materials. It is the analysis
of the form of an artwork to general audience to enhance their enjoyment and
satisfaction of the works of art. It involves developing an attentive ability to observe and
gaining knowledge of the social, cultural, and historical backgrounds that influence the
relevance and meaning of art.
4. Art History – it refers to the historical development and stylistic context of the objects
of arts that includes the major and minor arts. The study of art history examines and
evaluates how the visual arts—which include painting, sculpture, architecture, and other
visual expressions—have developed over time. It looks at how movements of art, styles,
and individual works have been influenced by cultural, social, political, and historical
settings throughout many eras and cultures.
5. Creativity - Being creative is having the ability to use one's imagination to come up
with new ideas or to handle a task or problem in an innovative or unusual way. The
capacity to tackle complicated problems and come up with unique solutions to
assignments depends on your creativity. Being creative allows you to see things from a
distinctive angle.

II. Shape Up Your Mind

Make your own answers out of these questions. (10 pts.)

1. As a student, what do you expect of this course?

2. Did you have personal experiences with art before? How did you feel participating in
art?
3. Why do you study humanities?
4. Why is creativity necessary in art making?
5. When can you say that a person is creative?
6. What is the relevance of art appreciation to your course?
7. Are mountains, rivers, lakes, volcanoes, and other nature that you see belong to the
field of art? If YES, why? If NO, why not?
8. Why does an individual create a work of art?
9. If you want to be an artist, what type/kind of art will you be? Why?
10. Who will utilize the art you prepared? To (a) yourself, (b) your community or (c) your
country?
11. Can art be globalized? If YES, how? If NO, why not?

1. As a student taking art appreciation, I look forward to enhancing my critical

thinking abilities. My awareness of culture will increase because of this subject,
which will also help me understand how art is related to society and history.
Through discussions, I hope to enhance my communication abilities. I look
forward if I can show my creative, if I have any.
2. I had diverse personal experiences with art, including visiting museums and
engaging with various forms of artistic expression. I have a great weakness in
drawing, painting or other related art that involves color and drawings, but I can
say that I excel in different field of art like literature because of my experience as
a member of the school publication, but I have an experience of digital art, which
I find it easier than traditional art. Looking at artworks gave me joy by just
analyzing its history and how it was made but participating in actual art is a
challenge for me.
3. I study humanities to gain a broad knowledge of human culture, history, literature,
philosophy, and the arts. Humanities also help me grow personally by

encouraging creativity and giving me a broad view on other societies and

historical events. The adaptable abilities gained by studying the humanities are
beneficial for many different job routes.
4. Since creativity allows artists to express original perspectives, feelings, and
ideas, it is essential to the process of creating art. It makes it possible to
experiment with novel forms, styles, and processes, which gives the artwork a
unique and captivating quality.
5. When someone is innovative, making original ideas, and problem-solving
techniques, they might be considered as creative. Different forms of creativity
include creative expression, inventive thinking, and effective communicator.
6. As a BS Computer Engineering student, my course can benefit from art
appreciation for design principles, user-friendly interfaces, algorithm visualization,
innovative problem-solving, communication skills, understanding human-machine
interactions, ethical considerations, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
7. Yes, nature can belong to the field of art. The complexity and beauty of natural
features like mountains, rivers, lakes, and volcanoes serve as sources of
inspiration for artists. Nature becomes a subject of creative expression and
interpretation through artistic representation.
8. Individuals make art for a variety of purposes, such as self-expression, idea or
delivering emotions, societal or personal issue exploration, and the search of
beauty. The creation of art can have aesthetic, cultural, or psychological
advantages.
9. If I were to be an artist, the art I want to be is literature because just like literature
pieces (novel, poem, stories, etc.), it can be easily read but it’s hard to be
interpreted. Like how people who barely know me whom can easily read my
gestures but can’t interpret properly what I wanted to convey.
10. The utilization of the art I prepare could vary. It will be mainly for personal or
myself, because I’m not quite confident in my artistic skill, although I can
contribute mainly to literature art. I would like to compose myself to be prepared
in contributing to the community or the country.
11. Yes, art can be globalized. International collaboration, exhibitions, social media
exposure, and the international exchange of creative inspirations are some of the
examples. These made art available to the world.

III. Critique (5x2=10 pts.)

Criticize these statements. (What can you say about the statements? Give your
reactions.)
1. In art appreciation one can understand something about the work of art while very
little, or may be nothing at all, about its history.
2. Art appreciation is for amateurs while art history is for professionals.
3. Through an artist’s work, we get a glimpse of the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs of the
people who lived in the period the artwork was produced
4. "Art is not what you see, but what you make others see" - Edgar Degas
5. There are many ways of defining art as there are people in the universe, and each
definition is influenced by the unique perspective of such persons, including their own
personality and character.

1. Art history and art appreciation has a connection. Although it is possible to

appreciate art without having a knowledge of its historical background, doing
so often makes the appreciation better. There is a connection between art and its
historical context, and understanding both gives one a greater understanding for
the artwork. Like how I appreciate the beauty of art, example the paintings, my
curiosity doesn’t exceed to the thought of knowing its deep meaning and history,
looking at it is enough for me.
2. The argument makes an inaccurate distinction among art history and art
appreciation. Both are activities that people with various levels of skill can
pursue. Anyone can interact with and appreciate art; it is not just for amateurs.
Although it is a professional field of study, art history is accessible to fans who
want to learn more about the historical background of artworks.
3. Although this statement is true in general, it is best addressed carefully.
Interpreting the work of an artist requires taking note of several aspects, even if
art frequently reflects the socio-cultural environment of its time. Art is subjective
and allows for feelings rather than objective realities, therefore it may not always
offer an obvious view into the ideas and emotions of people in a given time.
4. Edgar Degas encourages audiences to go beyond the surface of art by
emphasizing its interpretive quality. But art is a subjective experience, and one's
own perspectives always affect what they see. The statement emphasizes the

importance of artistic communication, yet it could simplify the range of ways that
people can interpret the same work of art.
5. The statement acknowledges that defining art is a subjective process and that
definitions are formed by the perspectives of those who make them. On the
contrary hand, one could counter that there are similarities and standards that
support a deeper understanding of art. Even if definitions could range, people
from different cultures and backgrounds tend to agree on a few basic
characteristics of what makes art.
IV. Class Activity
1. As a class, visit any or all of the following: (optional, wait for the teacher’s further
instruction)
art museums
art galleries
art exhibits
art and culture centers

Take a picture of the arts exhibited. Put them in a bond paper with the captions.
Describe their importance/significance to you, to your community and to the country.

Interview the people in-charge of the exhibit. Ask them how those artworks were
produced and secured?

2. Individual Homework (Work on this!) (10 pts.)

On a short bond paper, paste a drawn picture, printed or cut-out picture that
represents each of the following subjects:
1. one (1) picture that represents a person
2. one (1) picture that represents an object
3. one (1) picture that represents a scene
4. one (1) picture that represents an event

Reflection: (5 pts.)
Below is a reflection. Determine what you have learned (the knowledge that serves as
your foundation to stand and keep) the things you have realized and appreciated
(attitudes toward learning) and the things you have discovered (skills that you will
cherish in life).
Fill in each part of the reflection figure. Then show it to the whole class.
1. Things I have learned (Knowledge) is that I have developed a deep understanding of
a variety of artistic movements, styles, and cultural influences because of my study into
art appreciation. I now know how to evaluate artwork, picking out details in composition,
meaning, and historical background. My understanding has also grown to
encompass various artistic mediums, from modern multimedia works to traditional
paintings.
2. Things I have realized and appreciated (Attitudes) is that my appreciation of the
subjective aspect of interpretation has grown because of my participation in art
appreciation. I now understand that art is a kind of expression that goes beyond
language to enable unique interpretations and relationships. This insight has made me
more curious and open, which has motivated me to look at art with an open mind and a
desire to consider numerous perspectives and ideas.
3. Things I have discovered (Skills) is that I have learned and developed abilities like
visual evaluation, analytical thinking, and efficient communication of my opinions
through the process of appreciating art. I've become better at expressing, verbally and
in writing, the ideas and feelings that artwork generates in me. I've also improved my
capacity to understand the larger relevance of artistic productions by learning how to
place art within historical and cultural contexts. These skills are useful not just in the
field of art but also in other areas of my life where they allow me to express myself and
analyze things intelligently.
