The Resistors
Experiment No. 1

Objectives:
1. To measure the total resistance of the circuits using a multimeter.
2. To know the difference between parallel and series resistor in a circuit.
3. To understand the relationship between voltage, current and resistance.

Materials:
NI Multisim Software (Student Version)

Procedures:
1. Run NI Multisim Software and create electric circuit resistor based on problem solving
in Lesson 3.
2. Locate for Multimeter-XMM1 in the right-side of the software
3. Place the Multimeter-XMM1 and resistors into the breadboard with designated
values.
4. Connect the wires in a series/parallel connection to the Multimeter-XMM1.
5. Set the Multimeter-XMM1 into resistance value to measure the total resistance in a
series/parallel connection.
6. Before running the program, make sure to place and connect a ground in the
breadboard.
7. Thereafter, run the program/software to simulate.

Data and Results:

1. What is the total resistance if a 800 Ω resistor is connected in series with 1000 Ω and 200
Ω resistors?

𝑅_T = 𝑅_1 + 𝑅_2 + 𝑅_3 + ⋯ 𝑅_𝑛

𝑅_T = 800Ω + 1000Ω + 200Ω

𝑹_𝐓 = 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟎Ω

Figure 1
2. What is the total resistance if a 800 Ω resistor is connected in parallel with 1000 Ω and 200
Ω resistors?

𝑅_T = 1/(1/𝑅_1 + 1/𝑅_2 + 1/𝑅_3 + ⋯ 1/𝑅_𝑛 )

𝑅_𝑇 = 1/(1/800 + 1/1000 + 1/200)

𝑹_𝑻 = 𝟏𝟑𝟕. 𝟗𝟑𝟏 Ω

Figure 2

Interpretation of Data and Results:

Figure 1 shows a circuit with resistor connected in series consists of 800Ω, 1000Ω and
200Ω resistors. By computing the total resistance of the series resistors, we use the formula
𝑹𝐓 = 𝑹𝟏 + 𝑹𝟐 + 𝑹𝟑 + ⋯ 𝑹𝒏 or the Multimeter-XMM1 in the NI Multisim software. Therefore, we
get the total resistance of 2000Ω.

Figure 2 also shows a circuit with resistor but connected in parallel composed of 800Ω,
1000Ω and 200Ω resistors. By computing the total resistance of the parallel resistors, we use
𝟏 𝟏 𝟏 𝟏
the formula 𝑹𝐓 = 𝟏/(𝑹 + 𝑹 + 𝑹 + ⋯ 𝑹 ) or the Multimeter-XMM1 in the NI Multisim
𝟏 𝟐 𝟑 𝒏
software. Therefore, we obtained a total resistance of 137.931Ω.

Conclusion & Generalization:

The data and results above was performed manually and executed using NI Multisim
Software. It can be used to calculate fundamental operations in an electrical circuit. Through
this, you can visually represent the given electrical circuit. The total resistance connected in
series and parallel are measured virtually using the tool Multimeter-XMM1.
Resistors are in series when they are connected head-to-tail and there are no other
wires branching off from the nodes between components. Resistors in series share the same
current. When resistors are connected in series, the total resistance is the sum of the
individual resistors. Resistors are in parallel when their two terminals connect to the same
nodes. Resistors in parallel share the same voltage on their terminals. When resistors are
connected in parallel, the total resistance is smaller than the smallest one.

Components designed to have a specific amount of resistance are called resistors.

The resistor is a passive electrical component to create resistance in the flow of electric
current. According to ohm’s law, the relationship between voltage, resistance, and current is
the current passing through a conductor is directly proportional to the voltage over resistance.
From this relationship we can see that when we decrease the voltage and do not change the
resistance, the current will also decrease.
