First let's recall the properties of rectangle.


1. A rectangle has four sides, four vertices and four angles.
2. Opposite sides are parallel.
3. Opposite sides are congruent.
4. Adjacent angles are perpendicular.
Let's discover the following theorems on rectangle.

Theorem 1. If a parallelogram has one right angle, the it has


four right angles and the parallelogram is rectangle.

Theorem 2. The diagonals of a rectangle is congruent.

In theorem 2, diagonal TM is congruent to diagonal IE.


Meaning to say, if the measure of diagonal TM is 45m then
we can say that the measure of diagonal IE is also 45m.

Let's say diagonal IE measure 6cm, what do you think is the


measure of diagonal TM?

Why?
" Based on theorem 2, the
diagonals of a rectangle is
congruent."

Example 1. Find the length using rectangle TIME, given TM


= 2x + 31 and IE = 3(4x - 3).

Let us solve for x.

2x + 31 = 3(4x - 3)
2x + 31 = 12x - 9
2x - 12x = -9 - 31
-10x = -40
x=4
If the value of x is 4, find the measure of TM.
Jared. "TM = 2x + 31
= 2(4) + 31
= 8 + 31
TM = 39"
Exactly!
Who wants to find the measure of IE?

" IE = 3(4x - 3)
= 3(4(4) - 3)
= 3(16 - 3)
= 3(13)
Then we can say that the rectangle has two congruent IE = 39"
diagonals. Because they both measures 39.

Let's have another example.

Example 2. If NT = 20. What is the measurement of OE ?


NT = OE
20 = OE, therefore we can say that OE is equal to 20.

This is the advantage if we know the theorem 2 on


rectangle.

Let's have another example.


Example 3. If OX + XE = 56. What is the measurement of
NX ?

OE = NT
56 = NT

NX = 1/2OE
NX = 1/2 (56)

Example 4. If OE = 5x and NT = 9x - 80. What is the value


of OX ?

NT = OE
9x - 80 = 5x
9x - 5x = 80
4x = 80
x = 20

Let's find the measure of OE first before we can find the


measure of OX.

OE = 5x
= 5 (20)
OE = 100

Now what is the value of OX ?

" OX = 1/2OE
= 1/2(100)
