One of the benefits is that you get a first hand look of how someone during the Holocaust was feeling,
thinking, and doing. In the text, it said, “I instantly turned white, my stomach churned, and my
heart beat wildly—and all because I was afraid.” This shows us exactly how someone was feeling
11 in this moment and personalizes these terrible events. Another benefit is that this document helps 12E 3
us understand the different hardships during this time and how they affected people differently. For
example, the van Daans became jealous and greedy when it came to food. These are all benefits of a
first hand account of events.
Anne has conflicting feelings about hiding in the Annex because, on one hand, she is safe, but on
the other, she lives in constant fear. She also has conflicting feelings because she knows problems
outside of the Annex are much worse than hers, but she still experiences her own problems. In the
12 5F 3
text, she says, “The war is going to go on despite our quarrels and our longing for freedom and fresh
air.” She recognizes that she should be grateful, even though she is still upset, which only adds to her
conflicting feelings.
