EM417 Acoustics and Noise Control Assignment 2

EM417 Acoustics and Noise Control Assignment 2 | Jan-Apr 2023

Individual Assignment | Due Date: 6th April 2024 | Mark: 10/100

Question 1

Consider Fig. 1, where an acoustic barrier is installed for sound insulation. The sound power level
of the noise source is 100 dBA. The noise frequency is 1000 Hz, and assume that the speed of
sound is 320 m/s and a point propagation from the source. If the maximum allowable sound
pressure level is set at 30 dBA, compute the required height of L. You may plot a graph to
estimate the value of L.

Question 2

Consider a room with the dimension as shown in Fig. 2. The left- and right- sides of the walls (7 m
× 3 m) are made up of plywood (α = 0.12), the front- and back- side of the walls (7 m × 4 m) are
made up of drapery (α = 0.49), the ceiling (4 m × 3 m) is made up of lime plaster (α = 0.06). Assume
no air attenuation effect, and the sound speed is 344 m/s. If the reverberant time required is set
at 0.9 seconds, determine the required sound absorption coefficient of the floor.
