Enchanting

How to Enchant

Here's a quick summary of how to enchant an item. You must have a soul gem and know an
enchantment. Disenchanting items goes similarly - you lose the enchanted item to learn the enhancement
permanently. Further into the guide, you'll find detailed information filling soul gems, the soul trap spell,
and using advanced enchanting in Skyrim.

1. Head to an Arcane Enchanter with a soul gem that contains a soul. You can find one in whiterun in the
castle, Farengar Secret-Fire's room near the throne.

2. Bring up the menu by activating the enchanter and select the item you'd like to enchant OR disenchant
(which teaches you how to do that enchantment).

3. You can now choose a weapon, armor, or jewelry to enchant. Different item types accept different
enchantments.

4. Select the enchantment and its strenght, where applicable. If none are available, you first need to
disenchant items to learn those enchantments.

5. Pick the soul gem you'd like to use. The soul gem's size determines the strength of the enchantments. If
you cannot enchant, it means the soul gem is too weak and you need a stronger one.

6. You can select 2 enchants if you have the Extra Enchant Perk.

Using Enchanting & Gaining Levels

There are three ways you gain Enchanting skill experience - Disenchanting items to learn to do that
enchantment, recharging weapons with soul gems, and performing the enchantments themselves. The
more valuable the enchantments, the more experience will be received. Enchanting benefits all characters
in Skyrim eventually, so it's a skill you'll definitely want to develop on a high-level character.

Enchanting Trainer: Sergius Turrianus is an Expert Enchanting Trainer, found in The College of
Winterhold. You must complete the entrance quest to access him.

Disenchanting: How to Learn Enchantments

To learn an Enchant, simply take a magical item to an Arcane Enchanter and use the Disenchant option.
The item will be lost, but you'll gain Enchanting experience and learn the item's enchantment permanently.
Disenchanting more valuable items gives more experience, so don't be afraid to break something nice if
you need the xp and want to know how to do that enchant. Earlier on, it's harder to replace a good item,
but with points invested in Enchanting Perks, your Dragonborn will come to make more powerful enchants
than can be found on most items.

Soul Gems

Soul gems are used to enchant items. The bigger the soul, the stronger the enchant. Soul Gems contain
the souls of creatures and people in Skyrim. They come in a variety of sizes - Petty, Lesser, Common,

1
Greater, and Grand. Each can hold a soul up to its stated size. Black Soul gems are the only type that can
hold a person's soul, which is the equivalent of a Grand Soul which you can get from a mammoth. This
limitation prevents you from getting powerful souls from every bandit on the countryside.

Every creature in Skyrim has a soul size - that is, if it has a soul. Dwemer machines don't have souls, for
example. Casting soul trap will store a creature's soul in the smallest possible soul gem when it's killed.
You'll need a soul gem to enchant an item, and the size of the soul used determines the strength of the
enchantment.

It's best not to waste larger Soul Gems on enemies with small souls. If you only have greater soul gems,
only cast soul trap on powerful enemies to avoid putting a Skeever with a petty soul into a grand soul gem!
This is especially important if you're running around with a weapon enchanted with soul trap. Use soul trap
weapons as an alternate to avoid wasting them, or better, simply use the soul trap spell.

Soul Gems allow you to recharge weapons that have run out of magical energy. The amount of charge
replenished is determined, again, by the size of the soul used. Recharging items with soul gems gives you
XP proportionate to how much charge was restored.

Filling Soul Gems & Getting the Soul Trap Spell

To fill a soul gem, have one in your inventory while either killing an enemy with a weapon that contains the
soul trap enchantment, or using the soul trap spell itself. You can learn the soul trap spell from Farengar
Secret-Fire at Dragonsreach in Whiterun. There is also an Arcane Enchhanter there, along with an
Alchemy Table.

Enchanting and Improving Enchant Strength

Once you have a soul gem, along with a non-magical piece of gear, and have learned an enchant from
Disenchanting an item, head to an Arcane Enchanter to perform your Enchants. There you can select the
gear, which soul strength you'll use, and the enchant(s) you will place on the item. You can place two
enchantments on one item with the Extra Effect Perk from level 100 Enchanting.

You can boost your Enchants using potions of Fortify Enchanting. These can be bought in shops or
crafted with Alchemy yourself. You cannot enchant gear with Fortify Enchanting, but you can push the
strength of your potions by using Fortify Alchemy on gear. The process goes like this:

Use a Fortify Enchanting Potion

Enchant gear with Fortify Alchemy

Wear Fortify Alchemy Gear to make a stronger Enchanting Potion

2
Repeat this process, on a second set of gear that will have an even stronger Fortify Alchemy boost. By
doing so, you can push the strength of your enchants by about 30%. Wearing a Falmer Helmet with a
Circlet is a bug exploit, but will allow you to wear two helmets to get double the Fortify Alchemy boost. By
the way, if you have the Extra Effect perk, you can make your Alchemy Gear also boost Smithing, so that
you have a great set of crafting gear!

Fortify Enchanting Herbs: Blue Butterfly Wing, Hagraven Claw, Snowberries, and Spriggan Sap all provide
this Alchemy effect.

There are four rare weapon enchantments in Skyrim...

 Fiery Soul Trap - Found rarely on weapons in shops. One can usually be found in Ironbind
Barrow. This is the only rare enchant that is particularly good. It deals fire damage, while
also casting soul trap. One way to get "three" enchantments on one weapon.

 Huntsman's Prowess - comes from Poacher's Axe in Halted Stream Camp. This enchant
adds to damage against animals.

 Notched Pickaxe - Boosts smithing skill by 5 levels. Not particularly great, the pickaxe is
probably best kept as your Pickaxe, rather than being destroyed. You cannot, after all, put
this enchant on two pickaxes and dual wield them to get +10. Find it at Throat of the
World during the main quest.

 Silent Moons - find Weapons with this enchantment Northwest of Whiterun in Silent Moons
Camp. Causes weapons to deal bonus damage at night.

Enchanting Perks

Enchanter (5 Ranks, 20% Each)

(level 0/20/40/60/80 Enchanting Skill required)
You'll want all five points in this Perk, to make your Enchants twice as powerful. Worth every
point!

5
Soul Squeezer
(level 20 Enchanting Skill required)
Soul gems recharge items even more. Totally optional, just like the next.

Soul Siphon
(level 40 Enchanting Skill required)
Killing creatures (but not people) will recharge a weapon by a small degree, which can return some
of your charge costs, making magical weapons last longer. Not necessary to be a great Enchanter.

Insightful Enchanter
(level 50 Enchanting Skill required)
Fortify Skill enchantments on armor are 25% stronger. Very important when trying to make the
most powerful enchants, as it will boost your Fortify Alchemy enchants on your crafting gear.

Corpus Enchanter
(level 70 Enchanting Skill required)
Health, Magicka, and Stamina Enchantments on armor are 25% stronger.

Fire Enchanter
(level 30 Enchanting Skill required)
Fire Enchantments on weapons and armor are 25% stronger. Fire deals the most direct damage. I
consider this one important, you may not need the other two damaging types as badly.

Frost Enchanter
(level 40 Enchanting Skill required)
Frost Enchantments on weapons and armor are 25% stronger. Frost damage reduces Stamina
along with health.

Storm Enchanter
(level 50 Enchanting Skill required)
Shock Enchantments on weapons and armor are 25% stronger. Shock damage reduces Magicka
along with health.

Extra Effect
(level 100 Enchanting Skill required)
Add a second magical effect when Enchanting a piece of gear. Absolutely essential to make a
great Enchanter. It allows you to become incredibly powerful, along with your other skill perks - no
matter your build.

Alchemy

Making Potions and Poisons in Skyrim

Potions are produced by mixing two or three ingredients at an Alchemy Lab. If the ingredients share one
or more magical properties, a potion or poison is created. With nothing in common, the mixture will fail. A
successful product will have one or more effects, depending on how many of the ingredients' various
magical properties match up. Potions (red in color) are drank, effects felt instantly by the player. Poisons
(green) are applied to weapons and their effects used up through charges. Striking an enemy removes a
charge.

The strength of your potions and poisons are determined by your current alchemy level (with Fortify
helping appropriately) and the perks you've learned from the Alchemy perk tree. To learn

6
How to Learn Ingredient Effects

First, though they exist in the game, you do not need recipes to create potions. All herbs and food
ingredients have set effects. If they match, you will unlock knowledge of that property. Eating a raw
ingredient by using it in the menu will reveal the first property of an item. Later, with the Experimenter
Perk, you can reveal the second, third, and fourth effects of items. You'll always unlock the top left
property first, top right second and so on. So, you have two choices for unlocking the properties of
ingredients - either eat it, or use foreknowledge of properties or trial and error to combine potions to find
matching effects.

Powerleveling Alchemy

The experience you gain from a potion is based on the final value. Since Fortify Alchemy and Alchemy
Perks both help the power of effects, they also produce more expensive potions - thus more skill XP.
Some effects are more valuable than others. For example, Paralyze is an expensive effect while Restore
Stamina is not. A potion's value goes up based on the sum of all its effects, positive and negative, no
matter how much sense they make (a Fortify Restoration + Damage Magicka potion, for example).

In general, Alchemy is one of the easiest skills in Skyrim to level, especially with perks and gear
enchanted with Fortify Alchemy. You can buy out all the ingredients from an Alchemy ingredient vendor,
craft all your potions, then sell those back for a profit. In fact, you can even afford to do training and still
turn a profit in some cases as vendors won't often have enough money to buy all the potions you create.

Alchemy Trainers

There are two good trainers for Alchemy in Skyrim. The easiest to access is Arcadia, an Expert Alchemist
in Whiterun. Members of the Dark Brotherhood can train with Babette, a Master level trainer. She also
sells the Daedra Heart alchemy ingredient from time to time.

It takes fifteen perk points to master Alchemy, though it is unlikely you will want everything.

Alchemist (5 Ranks +20% Each)

(level 0/20/40/60/80 Alchemy Skill required)
Increases the strength or duration of potions by 20% per rank. Take all five points if your
Dovahkiin is going to use Alchemy for survival, profit, or both.

Physician
(level 20 Alchemy Skill required)
Boosts Health, Magicka, and Stamina potions by 25% in power. This perk will pay off with higher
potion values, whether you use the potions to heal or not.

Poisoner
(level 30 Alchemy Skill required)
Gives poisons +25% more power. Again, this could pay off with higher potion yields at the shop
whether you're using poisons on weapons or not.

Concentrated Poison
(level 60 Alchemy Skill required)

7
Poisons applied to weapons last for twice as many hits. This Perk's usefulness really depends on
your build. I'm not aware that this boosts the value of potions.

Green Thumb
(level 70 Alchemy Skill required)
Two ingredients are gathered from plants. Absolutely take this perk if you've got the prerequisites!
Some rather rare herbs can be found in pairs, which is a great boost to you in terms of supplies
and finances.

Benefactor
(level 30 Alchemy Skill required)
Potions you mix with beneficial effects have 25% greater magnitude. So, Fortify
Enchanting potions will have a bigger kick, helping you to Enchant and produce better potions.
Better take this perk if you're going that route.

Experimenter (3 Ranks, reveals 2/3/4 effects on eating an ingredient)

(level 50/70/90 Alchemy Skill required)
This perk isn't necessary if you use an Alchemy ingredients list, which I have in a table below.

Snakeblood
(level 80 Alchemy Skill required)
Gives you 50% resistance to all poisons - a slightly helpful defensive Perk.

Purity
(level 100 Alchemy Skill required)
This is a perk that will impact your potions' final values, but ultimately helps from a gameplay
perspective. All positives will be removed from poisons you create, but more importantly, all
negatives are removed from potions, allowing for some better custom combinations.

The following table will aid your potion-making efforts in Skyrim. Many effects are not challenging
to find, as they are found on various ingredients. There is one ingredient in particular that is tough
to find: the Daedra Heart. These are used to craft Daedric armor and weapons with the Smithing
skill. A guaranteed way to be able to farm Daedra Hearts is to get to level 20 and do the Pieces of
the Past quest. Toward the end are a few Dremora who, after the quest's completion, will respawn
once every few days. The trouble is, there aren't many of this enemy type in Skyrim other than
those. What few hearts are out there are scattered around the world. As the expensive option,
Daedra Hearts can be bought from Enthir as well as Babette of the Dark Brotherhood. Otherwise,
most alchemist merchants have a chance to sell them once in a while, though they are expensive.

Salmon Roe Waterbreathing Fortify Magicka Regenerate Magicka
Stamina

Okay if you want a really expensive potion you should mix garlic, nordic banacle (witch can be found
underwater or bought from an alchemy shop) And salmon roe. It gives you Regenerate health (health
regenerates 22% faster for 300 seconds), Regenerate magicka (magicka regenerates 22% faster for 300
seconds), and finaly water breathing ( you can breathe under water for 268 seconds. The base value is
1369 and this is without any perk and/or fortify. Happy mixing :-)

Salmon roe is not sold by alchemists, but if you go to a waterfall where salmon are jumping, you can
harvest it. It takes a bit of practice, but you can catch the jumping fish, and each fish caught provides a
sample of salmon roe.

And since the salmon re-spawn (heh) in just a couple of days' time, you can easily accumulate quite a bit
of salmon roe. The Kyne's Peace shout kills fish, allowing you quickly and easily harvest large amounts of
salmon roe if used near a waterfall with jumping fish. The problem is that fish killed this way don't re-
spawn, apparently.)

Anyway, take some salmon roe and combine it with histcarp (which can be found in just-about any body of
water) and you get a *ridiculously* powerful "waterbreathing" potion that can be sold for ridiculous
amounts of money. Even a rank beginner alchemist can use these two ingredients to craft a potion that

14
can be sold for more money than any merchant in the game possesses. And since it's so powerful and
expensive, crafting this potion levels your Alchemy skill very rapidly.

According to the wiki, the most expensive potion you can make with ingredients from a garden is made
with creep cluster, mora tapinella, and scaly pholiota. I doubt it's pretty, but if you don't want to grind
alchemy without the restoration loop, this is the best way you can use your garden and greenhouse

12x Canis Root, 12x Imp Stool, & 17x Mora Tapinella makes for poisons of Paralysis (fairly valuable)
& Lingering Damage Health (IIRC this is a DoT effect, & also moderately valuable), though Poisons are
useless against Skeletons, Draugr, & Vampires

Imp stool, mora tapinella and canis root. Makes a damage health/ravage health/ paralysis poison.

Currently using three to produce Creep Cluster, Mora Tapinella, and Scaly Pholiota, to produce income
and alchemy leveling. I'm considering planting Wheat and Blue Mountain Flowers to produce health
potions, as well Dragon's Tongue and Tundra Cotton for Batter Potions.

Mora Tapinella, Creep Cluster and Scaly Pholiota make the highest valued potion of plantable ingredients.
bleeding crown + deathbell + nightshade for weakness to poison and damaged health.

Alchemy Recipes & Power Level Guide

1. Bee + Bear Claws + Buck Antlers.

2. Garlic + Dwarvern Oil + Red Mountain Flower.

3. Charred Skeever Hide + Sabre Cat Eye + Swamp Fungal Pod.

4. Pearl + Charred Skeever Hide + Red Mountain Flower.

5. Blue Mountain Flower + Wheat.

6. Monarch Wing + Blue Mountain Flower + Giants Toe.

Giant's Toes and Wheat are the unlikely keys to Alchemy leveling. Combining these two easily-
obtainable ingredients yields one of the highest value potions and is quite possibly the quickest and
easiest way to level up your Alchemy skill.

The best Skyrim potion recipes

These are the 13 best Skyrim potion recipes, in no particular order:

Invisibility and Regenerate Health – Luna Moth Wing + Vampire Dust

Some potions simply heal, others make you invisible for a short period of time. This Invisibility and
Regenerate Health potion does both. Use a Luna Moth Wing and Vampire Dust to craft a Skyrim potion
recipe that makes you invisible and regenerates your health. Perfect for those moments when you feel
overwhelmed by powerful enemies.

15
Paralysis and Damage Health – Canis Root, Imp Stool + River Betty

If the enemy you’re facing is too strong and you need to stop them in their tracks while dealing damage to
them, the Paralysis and Damage Health poison works wonders. Simply craft with a Canis Root, Imp Stool
and River Betty. Apply the potion to your weapon and attack to paralyse and damage their health.

Waterbreathing – Chicken’s Egg + Nordic Barnacle

If your character can’t breathe underwater, you’ll need to brew up some Waterbreathing potions to make
your RPG life easier. Knock one up at an Alchemy Lab with a Chicken’s Egg and Nordic Barnacle.

Ravage Magicka – Orange Dartwing + Red Mountain Flower

Some enemies have ultra-powerful magic attacks and to stop them from using them, you’ll need to apply a
Ravage Magicka poison to your weapon and attack them with it. Doing this will severely reduce their total
Magicka points and give you a window of respite from their spells.

Damage Magicka Regen – Bear Claws + Blue Mountain Flower

Another great poison to apply to your weapon is Damage Magicka Regen. Attack an enemy with this and
they will stop regenerating Magicka for a little while. This one and the poison above have certainly helped
us out of some sticky situations.

Fortify Magicka, Restore Magicka & Fortify Destruction – Briar Heart, Ectoplasm + Glow Dust

If you’re reliant on magic attacks for your battles, you definitely want to make this potion. It will Increase
your total Magicka points, restore a good chunk of them, and increase the power of your destruction
spells. Perfect for the budding witches and wizards among you.

Cure Disease – Vampire Dust + Charred Skeever Hide

Not the fanciest of potions but one you’ll be using time and time again. Have a disease? Cure it.

Cure Disease, Resist Poison, Restore Health & Restore Stamina – Blisterwert, Charred Skeever Hide +
Mudcrab Chitin

Your does-everything healing potion. Perfect for when you’re diseased, poisoned, low on health and low
on stamina. Those ailments won’t know what hit them.

Regenerate Health, Regenerate Stamina & Regenerate Magicka – Purple Butterfly Wing, Bee + Garlic

Another fantastic healing Skyrim potion recipe that increases your Health, Magicka and Stamina
regeneration speeds. Perfect for those difficult boss battles.

Fortify Block, Fortify Heavy Armour & Resist Frost – Slaughterfish Scales, Briar Heart + Thistle Branch

Ice magic and Frost damage are two of the most annoying things to deal with in Skyrim. This potion,
luckily, helps you to resist Frost and comes with the upside of improving your Block skill and Heavy
Armour skill so you take less damage. Handy.

Fortify Sneak, Fortify Lockpicking & Restore Stamina – Purple Mountain Flower, Ashen Grass Pod +
Pine Thrush Egg

If sneaking around and lockpicking are your jam, this potion will definitely come in handy thanks to timed
boosts to both. It also carries the added benefit of restoring your Stamina.

Fortify Carry Weight – Creep Cluster + Giant’s Toe

16
This Skyrim potion recipe of strength will allow you to temporarily increase your total carry capacity. If
you’re like everybody else and need to hoard every item you find, you will need to make or buy this potion
as often as possible.

Damage Health, Damage Stamina, and Damage Magicka – Human Heart, Nirn Root + Chaurus Hunter
Antennae

This poison is a classic does-everything-you-want-it-to against enemies you’re finding too tough. Apply
this to your weapon and damage your enemy’s Health, Stamina and Magicka all at once.
