1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 MALYAN BANKING BERHAD BACKGROUND

Malayan Banking Berhad (doing business as Maybank) is a Malaysian universal bank, with key
operating "home markets" of Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. According to the 2020 Brand
Finance report, Maybank is Malaysia's most valuable bank brand, the fourth-top brand amongst
the Asean countries and ranked 70th among the world’s most valuable bank brands.

Maybank is Malaysia's largest bank by market capitalisation and total assets and one of the
largest banks in Southeast Asia, with total assets exceeding US$203 billion and a net profit of
US$1.98 billion for 2019.

Maybank is also ranked 106th in The Banker's 2020 Top 1000 World Banks (as of July 2020) and
349th in the Forbes Global 2000 Leading Companies (as of May 2020).

Maybank is the largest public listed company on Bursa Malaysia, the Malaysian stock exchange,
with a market capitalisation of US$23.7 billion as of 31 December 2019.

Maybank's network spans across all 10 ASEAN nations as well as key Asian countries and global
financial centres, with a network of 2,600 retail banking branches worldwide and more than 43,000
employees.

1.1.1 BRIEF HISTORY OF ESTABLISHMENT

First Maybank Banch. Since 1960 at Jalan Tun H.S.Lee Kuala Lumpur

Maybank was founded by Singaporean business tycoon Tan Sri Khoo Teck Puat (who died in
2004) & Oei Tjong Ie. The company was led by President and CEO Tan Sri Amirsham Abdul Aziz
from 1994 until March 2008 after which he was appointed Minister in the Prime Minister's
Department in-charge of the Economic Planning Unit, a post he held until April 2009. Tan Sri
Abdul Wahid Omar was President & CEO of Maybank Group from May 2008 to June 2013. On 1
May 2022, Dato' Khairussaleh Ramli was appointed as President & CEO of Maybank Group.

2.1 THE ETHICAL BUSINESS PRACTICES

As a responsible financial institution, we strive to ensure that all our business dealings are
conducted in an ethical manner. This includes, but is not limited to, our dealings with our
customers, business partners, employees and members of the public.

2.2 THE CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (CSR)

Maybank has a long history of being at the heart of the community. Right from the start, we aimed
to be a bank for all Malaysians, and Maybank branches have become a nucleus of many small
towns throughout the country. In line with our humanising mission, we are now extending this
community-based approach across the region.

 Maybank BII Scholarships

In November 2012, Bank Internasional Indonesia (BII) launched a local and overseas
scholarship award programme. In 2013, over 8,400 students from all over Indonesia applied
for local scholarships, and 28 received awards. Meanwhile, 300 students applied for
overseas scholarships, and five have now been granted awards to study in Malaysia and
Singapore

 Maybank Foundation Scholarships

In 2013, the Maybank Foundation allocated RM30 million to fund scholarships that cover
tuition fees, living allowances, laptops and training. We also run development programmes
such as internship and mentorship to prepare scholars for a rewarding career with the
Maybank Group.

2.3 A NEW CSR PROGRAM PROPOSAL FOR THE ORGANIZATION
 Blood Donation

Maybank Marketing has been organising annual Blood Donation Drives as part of its corporate
social responsibility initiative since 2014. Organised in collaboration with the National Blood Centre
this donation drive is aimed at raising awareness on the benefits of blood donation and increasing
the national blood supply required for emergency medical conditions, blood diseases and post-
childbirth blood loss, among others.

 Raising Environment Awareness During Earth Day

Maybank Marketing Malaysia together with Maybank Malaysia supported the Selangor Earth Day
Celebration organized by the Department of Environment Malaysia. With the objective of raising
environmental awareness among students, talks regarding plastic pollution, issues with Municipal
Solid Waste as well as methods to reduce, reuse and recycle were conducted during the event.
Students from secondary schools in Selangor came together to take part in environmental
activities which included tree planting, environmental related quiz, e-waste recycling competition,
choral speaking and sketch.

2.4 IMPORTANCE OF CSR PROGRAM TOWARDS COMPANY REPUTATION

1. Sustainability: CSR helps businesses to adopt sustainable practices that have a positive
impact on the environment. This includes reducing carbon emissions, promoting energy
efficiency, sustainable sourcing, and responsible supply chain management.

2. Social Impact: CSR allows businesses to create a positive impact on society by engaging in
philanthropic activities, supporting social causes, and giving back to the community. This
includes community outreach programs, employee volunteerism, and charitable donations.

3. Stakeholder Engagement: CSR helps businesses to engage with their stakeholders,


including customers, employees, suppliers, and communities. This creates a sense of trust
and loyalty, which is beneficial for the business in the long run.

4. Brand Reputation: CSR helps to enhance the brand reputation of the business. By being
socially responsible, businesses can differentiate themselves from their competitors and build
a positive brand image. This can result in increased customer loyalty and improved financial
performance.

3.0 CONCLUSION

This report aimed to provide an analysis of a banking company, Maybank. In the first part of the
essay, the history of Maybank and the services it provides have been explained alongside with the
vision and mission statements. Subsequently, a SWOT analysis have been done whereby the
strength, weakness, opportunities, and threats facing the company are outlined. Based on this, it
has been discovered that Maybank has the largest number of branches in Malaysia but has limited
global penetration. Despite that, it has the opportunities to expand its business in the ASEAN
region.However, the current macroeconomic scenario across the globe may cause a threat to the
company as it aims to grow Islamic business in markets like Indonesia and Singapore. To add on,
the CSR activities conducted by Maybank have been listed as well. Some of Maybank's
contributions are donating over RM5 million to the Liver Transplant Centre in Hospital Selayang.
Other than that, Maybank has also provided opportunities to talented individual to ensure that they
receive proper education to reach their full potential, in conclusion, Maybank benefits the society
and nation in abundance with its contributions, strengths and opportunities it gets despite having
faced a few threats involving its competitors, banking safety issues, and so on.
