Instructions for the use of the Compass Observation Log

The errors of the gyro and magnetic compasses are to be checked at least once per watch and at all large
alterations of course, providing circumstances permit. The results are to be recorded in the "Compass
Observation Log". Where it has not been possible to obtain an error the reason should be entered into the
log i.e. " error unobtainable, overcast throughout.
A Compass observation should be made from the Magnetic Binnacle at least once per week, and
whenever there is doubt as to the accuracy of the deviation card. Such observations should also be
recorded on the “Compass Observation Log”, in a distinct colour for easy checking.
Once a page is completed it must be signed by the Master prior to archiving.
