Brazes Welds

1 Niobium material samples according https://edms.cern.ch/document/1440436/1

to Section 3.2
2 Material certificates and quality https://edms.cern.ch/document/1440445/1
control of raw materials (including
RRR measurements)
3 Material certificates of welding https://edms.cern.ch/document/1440881/1
consumables (whenever applicable)
4 Functional and manufacturing DQW Beam tube: https://edms.cern.ch/document/1440887/2
drawings (with tolerances) RFD Drawings (draft): https://edms.cern.ch/document/1459942/1
DQW Drawings (draft): https://edms.cern.ch/document/1458338/1

(see “Comments T.C - R.L - NIOWAVE 01-2015.pdf”)

- No geometrical dimensioning and tolerances
- Some dimensions are missing or wrong
- Why AISI 304 for flanges?
- Missing grooves for leak testing on flanges
- How’s the positioning accuracy guaranteed before and during welding?

5 Design reports demonstrating that CERN input CERN input

welds are designed to withstand the
specified load cases (refer to Section
3.6.1)
6 Welding plan including:
Welding maps Not needed Beam tube: https://edms.cern.ch/document/1455150/2

DQW and RFD not done – not uploaded

Remarks:
i) the name of the final WPS, instead of the
datasheet, should be indicated
ii) remember to keep trace of the welds also in a
welding book

qualification record including CERN The samples drawings are in:
acceptance criteria in Section 4.2 (WPQR The document sent (NWV-BRZ-001) is a BPQ. In order https://edms.cern.ch/document/1446717/1
and BPQR) to be the final BPQ you should correct the title (see
NWV-BRZ-001_modified.pdf) see BPQR.pdf for the (see “Guide to prepare the WPQR - ASME CODE.doc” for
BPQR template details)
i) Missing some variables for EBW according to
table QW-260
ii) Missing important parameters of EBW (amps,
volts…)
iii) Missing name of the welder
iv) How come the welding speed is equal for
different thicknesses?

specification (WPS and BPS)
NWV-BPS-001 (from e-mails). Just a correction on page
2: you should say that “BPQRs supported by this WPS”.

Welders performance qualification https://edms.cern.ch/document/1458316/1 Not done – not uploaded

(GTAW) – in case of TiG
Operator name missing WOPQ needed
Brazer Performance Qualifications (BPQ)
The document NWV-BRZ-001 is a BPQ, but was sent as
Welding and Brazing Operators a BPQR. In order to be the final BPQ you should correct
Performance Qualifications (WOPQ and the title (see NWV-BRZ-001_modified.pdf)
BOPQ) - electron-beam welding and
vacuum brazing (automatic processes)
7 Manufacturing procedures (whenever https://edms.cern.ch/document/1455232/1
required by Annex 6.3)
i) Methanol is very toxic and should be handled with extreme care. A test for replacing methanol with
ethanol would be very advantageous.
ii) At CERN neither Scoth-brite nor Nb files are used for deburring. In order to avoid any contamination of
foreign materials explore the possibility of using SiC based tools.

8 Test procedures (whenever required https://edms.cern.ch/document/1462732/1

by Annex 6.3) (obsolete: https://edms.cern.ch/document/1455259/1)
Radiographic and Tuning procedure

Just a remark on 100-RT-001(Rev8): the procedure is correct and in compliance with ASME V. It should be noted that
the mentioned procedure has to follow also CERN engineering specifications (EDMS N°1389669, pg. 11, table 6)
9 EB welded and vacuum brazed Not done – not uploaded https://edms.cern.ch/document/1446717/1
samples according to the requirements
specified in Section 3.8.4
10 NDT personnel qualifications Not done – not uploaded

Leak detection Operator Qualification & Leak check certification: qualifications according to ISO 9712 or SNT-TC-1A,
and written procedure in compliance with EN13885 or ASME V are requested. These documents do not meet neither
ISO nor ASME requirements.
11 Manufacturing and inspection plan https://edms.cern.ch/document/1458682/1
(MIP) - list of all manufacturing and
quality control operations It would be useful to issue an overall MIP document, instead of a MIP for each part. See the example attached, as a
template (Comments to Manufacturing QA documentation.ppt).
