I Can Learn

Now that you can visually identify an angle pair based on its illustration, it is time
for you to learn how to solve the unknown angles and values in each geometric
representation. The properties of angle pairs that you have learned are the essential
concepts that you can apply to determine the unknown measures in a given figure.
Read and study the following illustrative examples below.

Example 1:
If ∠b = 36°, find the measure of ∠a. 𝒂 =?
𝒃 = 𝟑𝟔°
Solution:
Since ∠a & ∠b formed right angle then, they are complementary angles.
So,
m∠a + m∠b = 90 Form an equation.
m∠a + 36 = 90 Substitute the m∠b.
m∠a + 36 – 36 = 90 − 36 Subtract 36 from both sides of the
equation (SPE).
m∠a = 54 or ∠a = 54° Simplify.

Or you may simply do this:

90 – 36 = 54 Subtract the given angle from 90.

m∠a = 54 or ∠a = 54° Simplify.

Checking:
m∠a + m∠b = 90 Write the original equation.
54 + 36 = 90 Substitute the m∠a and m∠b.

90 = 90 Simplify.
Example 2:

If m∠c = 3𝑥 − 4 and m∠d = 58 what

is the value of 𝑥 and m∠c? 𝒄 = (𝟑𝒙 − 𝟒)°

Solution:
To find the measure of m∠d, first identify the value of 𝑥.
Since ∠c and ∠d formed right angle, then they are complementary
angles.
So,
m∠c + m∠d = 90 Form an equation.
(3𝑥 – 4) + 58 = 90 Substitute the m∠c and m∠d.
3𝑥 + 54 = 90 Simplify.
3𝑥 + 54 – 54 = 90 − 54 Subtract 54 from both sides of the
equation (SPE).
3𝑥 = 36 Simplify.
3𝑥 36
= Divide both sides of the equation
3 3
by 2 (DPE).
𝒙 = 𝟏𝟐 Simplify.

Substitute the value of 𝒙 to the given measure of ∠c.

m∠c = 3𝑥 − 4 Form an equation.
m∠c = 3(12) − 4 Substitute the value of 𝒙.

m∠c = 32 or ∠c = 32° Simplify.

Checking:
m∠a + m∠b = 90 Write the original equation.
(3𝑥 − 4)+ 58 = 90 Substitute the m∠c and m∠d.
3(12) − 4 + 58 = 90 Substitute the value of 𝒙.

90 = 90 Simplify.
Example 3:
𝒆 =? 𝒇 = 𝟕𝟑°
Find the measure of ∠e if ∠f = 73°.

Solution:
Since ∠e & ∠f formed linear pair then, they are supplementary angles.
So,
m∠e + m∠f = 180 Form an equation.
m∠e + 73 = 180 Substitute the m∠f.
m∠e + 73 – 73 = 180 − 73 Subtract 73 from both sides of the
equation (SPE).
m∠e = 107 or ∠e = 107° Simplify.

Or you may simply do this:

180 – 73 = 107 Subtract the given angle from 180.

m∠e = 107 or ∠e = 107° Simplify.

Checking:
m∠e + m∠f = 180 Write the original equation.
107 + 73 = 180 Substitute the m∠e and m∠f.

180 = 180 Simplify.

Example 4:

∠g and ∠h are linear pair. Find m∠g 𝒉 = (𝟓𝒙 + 𝟐𝟕)° 𝒈 = (𝟑𝒙 − 𝟕)°
and m∠h if ∠g = (3𝑥 − 7)° and
∠h = (5𝑥 + 27)° .

Solution:
First identify the value of 𝒙, to find m∠g and m∠h.
Since ∠g & ∠h formed linear pair then, they are supplementary angles.
So,
m∠g + m∠h = 180 Form an equation.
(3𝑥 – 7) + (5𝑥 + 27) = 180 Substitute the m∠g and m∠h.
8𝑥 + 20 = 180 Simplify.
8𝑥 + 20 – 20 = 180 − 20 Subtract 20 from both sides of the
equation (SPE).
8𝑥 = 160 Simplify.
8𝑥 160
= Divide both sides of the equation
8 8
by 8 (DPE).
𝒙 = 𝟐𝟎 Simplify.

Substitute the value of 𝒙 to the given measure of ∠g and ∠h.

m∠g = 3𝑥 − 7 Form an equation.
m∠g = 3(20) − 7 Substitute the value of 𝒙.
m∠g = 53 or ∠g = 53° Simplify.

m∠h = 5𝑥 + 27 Form an equation.

m∠h = 5(20) + 27 Substitute the value of 𝒙.
m∠h = 127 or ∠h = 127° Simplify.

Checking:
m∠g + m∠h = 180 Write the original equation.
53 + 127 = 180 Substitute the m∠g and m∠h.

180 = 180 Simplify.

Example 5: 𝒎 =?
If m∠k = 75, what is m∠𝑙, m∠n,
𝒌 = 𝟕𝟓° 𝒍 =?
and m∠o?
𝒏 =?
Solution:
Since ∠k and ∠𝑙 are vertical angles, then, they have equal measures.

So,
m∠𝑙 = m∠𝑘 Form an equation.
m∠𝑙 = 75 Substitute the m∠k.
m∠𝒍 = 75 or ∠𝒍 = 75° Simplify.

Since ∠𝑘 and ∠𝑚 formed linear pair, then, they are supplementary angles.
So,
m∠m + m∠k = 180 Form an equation.
m∠m + 75 = 180 Substitute the m∠k.
m∠m + 75 – 75 = 180 − 75 Subtract 75 from both sides of the
equation (SPE).
m∠m = 105 or ∠m = 105° Simplify.

Or you may simply do this:

180 – 75 = 105 Subtract the given angle from 180.

m∠m = 105 or ∠m = 105° Simplify.

Since ∠m & ∠n are vertical angles, then, they have equal measures.
So,
m∠n = m∠m Form an equation.
m∠n = 105 Substitute the m∠m.
m∠n = 105 or ∠n = 105° Simplify
Example 6: H R

If m∠HAS = 5𝑥 − 30 and m∠EAR = 2𝑥 + 12,
(𝟓𝒙 − 𝟑𝟎)° (𝟐𝒙 + 𝟏𝟐)°
find the value of 𝑥.

S E
Solution:
Since ∠HAS & ∠EAR are vertical angles, then, they have equal measures.

So,
m∠HAS = m∠EAR Form an equation.
5𝑥 − 30 = 2𝑥 + 12 Substitute the m∠HAS and m∠EAR.

5𝑥 − 30 + 30 = 2𝑥 + 12 + 30 Add 30 from both sides of the

equation (APE).
5𝑥 = 2𝑥 + 42 Simplify.
5𝑥 − 2𝒙 = 2𝑥 − 2𝒙 + 42 Subtract 2x from both sides of the
equation to eliminate 𝑥 in one side of
the equation.
3𝑥 = 42 Simplify.
3𝑥 42
